yes. i kept a copy by my bedside for about 5 months and read it daily. usually on waking rather than at night. this will be confused but here goes.

aside from the practical consideration that the nyrb one volume reprint isn't a good edition and it's better to spring for the folio society 3 volume (or the old out of print modern library edition the folio is based on), i enjoyed watching a mind at work in processing and shaping everything that enters it into something that matches its needs and preoccupations. it is rather like montaigne obviously but with montaigne there's the likelihood that the educated reader will either already know or will eventually get around to most of the classical sources montaigne continually goes back to. And so there's the chance for you to engage with his engagement in two broad ways - how his interpretations impact your reading of the sources and what they show about his own reading. Burton more frequently removes that first aspect since it's unlikely you'd ever want to read most of what he cites. so if you're going to engage with his book you've got to do it purely through him. and so once you come to like him - or at least understand him - it ends a more personal experience than what you get even with montaigne - or any great memorialist for that matter since they all tend to write about periods or events you could have some interest in outside themselves. burton is in fair part antiquated medical theories most often presented in distorted portion so i have a very hard time imagining anyone enjoying that material in itself. it comes down to the mind of the writer and there it is beautiful fun once you put the effort in to grow initiated.

The dude rambles a lot and looses track of his thought often. That's why this book is so long imo. But I guess you could argue this is somehow a positive thing.

this poem is titled "timshel"

I sink into the wall,
And staring up i saw,
Im alone in all my thoughts,
Too afraid to be crazy i run,
It always finds me driving right through town,
With the windows down i fly,
Its the feeling spring has brought,
But an eye for the winter's what i got,
It always finds me...

So tonight,
When i left here,
All i said was goodbye and thats alright,
No "i'll see you later",
I've been trying my whole life,
And if its an eye for an eye why cant i get this right,
Im too slow to go fast,
Im too nervous to do that,
So i run, run away why should I...

I take my chances slow,
After all it's no one's fault,
But the pain seems to crave my life,
So ashamed of my weakness i lie,
It always finds me...

does it have anything to do with east of eden?

I tried to read it, I really, truly did. When I made my attempt I even half agreed with the politics. Images of society collapsing always interest me. But the writing was just too bad for me to stand, even then. I got around 5 chapters in before setting it aside.

Something you can never learn sadly. You can learn how to construct a plot and write basic prose. But writing really good prose requires an innate talent: a feeling for sound, cadence, wordplay. A good writer, whether he writes minimalistically or elaborately, will make the words flow effortlessly.

If I'm reading the translation is it basically useless to read for the prose?

Is ISOLT's Montcrieff translation as close to as beautiful as Proust's original French prose?
21 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8839861
Short answer no.

Prose is a tremendously wide concept that incorporates virtually every facet of language, some things always translate, some things don't. Some things translate into some languages, somethings don't translate into others.

In the case of French and English especially there are so many commonalities and overlapping vocabulary that it leaves a lot of space for prose to remain intact or reasonably translated.
>>
It's all about translator's skills. If a translator sucks, of course it's better to read the original. If a translator is able to reproduce the beauty and the main features of an author's prose, just go with it. (Also be aware there are some countries with better skilled translators, because that really depends on specialized schools and universities; some countries actually prove to have something like a natural talent towards translations). Between reading an original with a 60-70% of comprehension and reading a translation with a 95% of comprehension, I choose the second.
>>
>>8839901
Its more like the original for 60% comprehension
Read a translation for 85% comprehension
Read the original alongside a translation for 95% comprehension

His smugness. His pseudo-wit. His boring, uninspired "poetry." I hate him and everything he is. I hate Billy Collins. I cannot find the words to express how much I despise this goddamn asshole, and not for the same reasons he can't. I hate his retarded populist drivel and his goddamn superior attitude. Billy Collins is everything a poet should not be: alive at 75, American, and successful.

I used to be an atheist. I used to think that religion was a fable, God a delusion. But then I read Billy fucking Collins, and I realized that God must be hiding somewhere, because the devil did not create himself.

I'm sick of his boring, overblown nonsense. I'm sick of having to pretend that his kitsch, narcotic trash is some kind of profound insight into the human condition. I'm sick of wasting time on Billy goddamn Collins in English classes instead of giving our attention to the myriad poets who actually deserve it. I'm sick of reading poetry that wouldn't even pass for mediocre prose. I'm sick of the idea that Billy Collins can actually be Poet Fucking Laureate of the United Goddamn States. I'm sick of Billy Motherfucking Collins.

When did boring, pretentious garbage become a substitute for good poetry? When did half-assed parodies of good poems and lazy references to other poets replace actual humor and wit? Has God truly abandoned us? Why is Billy goddamn Collins allowed to live?

I'm actually disgusted when I decide to check the Poetry section of a bookstore, only to find an entire fucking shelf devoted to Billy fucking Collins. I hate the fact that a man of such unrefined stuff can manage to make millions of dollars by publishing volume upon volume of the same god-awful, painfully straightforward garbage for decades, all while being taught to students at $200,000/year universities by actual poets who have to bask in his ill-earned glory.

I just - I just absolutely loathe this fucking cretin. I can't wrap my head around the fact that some retarded bullshit artist named Billy can rake in the millions by excreting poetry that somehow manages to enthrall the masses while condescending to them. I hate his attitude, I hate his output, and I hate his unjustifiable success.

There are no more ways I can put this now. I just hate Billy fucking Collins so goddamn much.

Perhaps you should reconsider your opinion on Collins. After all, he does have quite a few good poems.

Take his "Nostalgia," for instance - I think everyone can relate to this charming bit of satire. One probably couldn't even help himself from laughing at least once while reading it simply because it's so witty, and the imagery is simply spectacular later on in the poem.

Another good poem of his is "Forgetfulness." Here, he muses on how people forget more and more as they age. His inconsistent punctuation and capitalization really adds a visual element to this poem, which highlights a concrete aspect of forgetfulness. Also, his imagery and use of personification really adds life to this poem.

Finally, perhaps take a look at "The Art of Drowning," where he asks himself whether or not life can really flash before our eyes. While the detail alone is great in the first three stanzas, he really hits home with the sudden thrust of the drowning man's reality into the poem. His final stanza especially underscores the totality of death and has strong existentialist overtones.

Of course, free verse isn't everyone's cup of tea, but anyone could admit that he is able to deliver quite a bit of substance in his poetry - even if form is lacklustre.
