>In the three or four civilized countries of Europe women can through a few centuries of education be made into anything, even into men: not in the sexual sense, to be sure, but in every other sense. Under such a regimen they will one day have acquired all the male strengths and virtues, though they will also of course have had to accept all their weaknesses and vices into the bargain: thus much can, as aforesaid, be extorted. But how shall we endure the intermediate stage, which may itself last a couple of centuries, during which the primeval properties of women, their follies and injustices, are still asserting themselves over what has been newly learned and acquired? This will be the age in which the actual masculine affect will be anger: anger at the fact that all the arts and sciences have been choked and deluged by an unheard-of dilettantism, philosophy talked to death by mind-bewildering babble, politics more fantastic and partisan than ever, society in full dissolution...

>Listening to my mother, grandmother and aunt discussing banalities of interior decorating in between doting on the dying man sickened me. I retreated into my book to bear it, ironically finishing the Antichrist as a priest came into the room. I never want to be in that position. I recall writing that I want to live to 100 at the start of this document. This comes with one exception: If I am inhibited to the point where my becoming becomes mere being I will end my life without an ounce of remorse or sadness. Life is worth paying any cost, but mere existence is not worth the price some pay for it. I wonder what kind of suicide note I’d leave on this occasion, that of a joyous separation from existence. Not worth pondering as a young and able man.

"I am an asshole, I constantly judge and critique people. I say mean things about people I don't know for a laugh. I judge others harshly and critically, yet I dislike most of my own traits. I am self-loathing, depressed, apathetic, and yet I think I am better than those around me.
I have nothing to back this inflated sense of superiority, it is just easy to regard those around me as worse than myself. I am in constant rumination and self-reflection about my identity and what I am doing with my life, yet I can never seem to get anywhere.
I want to make changes and improvements but I never follow through, comfort is king in my life it seems. I don't know if I suffer from an actual acute depression or I am just being a pussy. I have anxiety about my future constantly, yet I do nothing, which leads me to more anxiety and depression. It seems to be a vicious cycle of self-defeat that I can never seem to break.
I wish I could overcome myself.

Don't delete this thread, janitors and mods, it's within the rules Hiro outlined.
There are principally two things killing /lit/ that no one is addressing;
1. Threads which have no relation to /lit/ e.g. "What is purpose?" and "Is x drug /lit/?"
2. Beginner threads e.g. "Is this worth reading?" "What does /lit/ think of x?" and "What is some x literature?"
In order to restore /lit/ to its former glory, every single thread which breaks these rules must be deleted and a message given to the poster saying "not /lit/" or "read the sticky"
I suggest the janitors start doing their job and implement the already established rules properly (who cares if the threads decrease) and institute a culture of high quality posts.
And before any newfags or people from Ribbit start crying, kill yourselves!
Fuck off back to Reddiit cunt.

It's not if you have to ask.

>is a literature book literary?
Are non-superstar authors (so not King, Rowling, etc) able to live off just writing or do they still need a day job?
There are some authors who make quite a bit of money self publishing garbage.
>>8841844
if you have a fan-base, yes, but your books need to sell. I think it's 1.25 per copy sold if you go through a publisher (average), but if you sell it online it's all yours, etc.
selling you're writing is fairly similar to other mediums of product, like selling produce on the side of the road. if people like it, it will sell.
>>8841850
No self publisher has lived off their writing without getting picked up by a real publisher
thoughts?
Go great with black tea
I think you like to start your morning with a large dose of outrage.
>dude my ex boyfriends were shit lmfao
Alright /lit/, how would you write a locked-room murder?
He entered by the WINDOW
And left the wife a WIDOW,
The cops did enter by the DOOR,
But of the rest they thought no MORE.
Lord Henry sitting was in his old CHAIR,
And then a soundly noise did move the AIR,
The murderer had brought a LADDER,
By which he climbed without a STAGGER,
And with his knife, did cut the window OPE,
And took his life, and so the widow's HOPE.

Do you guys ever speak with the workers at bookstores about book, any good experiences?
>>8841794
The ones at the bookstore that I frequent, smirk at my books every time I ring up.
Kinda like pic related; sorry for the cancer.
only at the crazy ass independent patchouli bookstore where half the reason it exists is because lunatics, drug addicts, and political dissidents use it as a social venue
at the big chain store sometimes i'll say "i need a bag" and the garish hipster cunt at the counter will give me one
>>8841794
never once, unless i needed help finding something.
I got a literary agent who wants to sign me, should I do it? My thing is can't I make more $$ self publishing if its good? Aren't they worthless nowadays though?
Self-publish when you make a name for yourself.

>My thing is can't I make more $$ self publishing if its good?
No.

70% royalty if you self publish
10% if you don't
So I've been trying to read all the epic fantasy these last 5 years or so. Having run out of obvious choices, can you guys please recommend some that you enjoy? I'm not by any means well read but I've gotten most of the popular authors out of the way.
Those that struck me as great: Malazan, Memory Sorrow and Thorn, and a few Guy Kay. Fiovanar Tapestry fell flat for me with the omniscient perspective and low fantasy setting.
And of course I love Jordan and Martin but I may have my nostalgia goggles on for those.
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
I assume you've read Joe Abercrombies stuff?
>>8841766
I know it isn't Epic Fantasy but Dune and Hyperion that are both fantastic books and are Science-Fantasy, so it is almost close.
The best in the genre is The Book of the New Sun.
You should probably read a couple Borges stories first, like the garden of forking paths and Funes the memorious (don't worry, they're really short, it should take you half an hour at most)
Let's be honest /lit/. How hard would Aquinas BTFO Neetche in a debate?
They're both shit desu
>>8841729
Aquinas was a brilliant mind. Eternal pity that he had to mold his philosophy to the dogmas of the church.
>>8841770
He brought christian theology to a whole new level and made it consistent which was hard in itself
>>8841735
>Aquinas was shit
Hey /lit/
Anyone else here read any Gary Jennings?
If so, favorite novels or characters?
Personally I like the alibab/alladin/nostril character from The Journeyer
Can't recommend this author more.
Also, any one familiar with Colleen Mcculoughs Masters of Rome series?
>>8841576
What am I missing from not reading Aztec? I'm interested in it but I have no idea what it even compares to.
>>8841576
Nostril is hilarious. Poor Marco Polo's underage ass... Raptor is also also awesome: the sexy adventures of a hermaphrodite named Thorn in a post-Roman Europe. post-Roman world.
Who influenced William Gaddis?
