nothing more pleb than only reading the classics.

Your shill technique needs a lot of refining. Think of the frog in the pot.

Make the novel gradually more visibile, take advantage of stack threads, what are you reading threads, rec threads.

Dedicated threads with antagonistic OPs will only drive people away.
>>
>>8845441
oh I'm not trying to shill that specific book, but newer books / not the classics in general.

Who is the greatest philosopher of our times, and what is their best work?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8845403
Philosophy is two things: the search for the good life and the search for the truth.

I think that the greatest philosopher for the good life is Marcus Aurelius. For the truth it's very hard to say because nobody contributed more than a few percents to what we know about reality today in light of philosophy. The most important historically is maybe Plato or Kant.

shit fuck. Im an idiot. I meant to say current times. "our times" is too broad. I'm looking more for recent phils.

Is this worth reading casually? As in, I'm not trying to become a fucking war strategist.

>As in, I'm not trying to become a fucking war strategist.

luckily for you that requires an actual technical military education and not just flicking through a book of very short, millennia-old aphorisms
>>
>>8845396
>I'm not trying to become a fucking war strategist.

Well that's too bad buddy because once you made your way through this gem of roughly 100 pages you will rival the likes of Napoleon, Caesar and Alexander the Great whether you want it or not.

Im almost done with Independent People now. Amazing book - characters, tone, and descriptions of the landscape all fusing together to make the ultimate comfy experience. I wish it was more widely known in America, desu.

Read the first chapter sitting on a rock near Reykjavik. Transformative.

I used to be an absolute bookworm when I was younger but then PC games happened. Now, I want to get back into cultivating a reading habit, albeit in baby steps. I made it a goal for myself to read ten books in half a year without double-ticking (don't tick a classic fantasy novel under both categories). I also already decided on the kinds - four novels (2 fantasy, 2 non-fantasy), one self-improvement book, two classics, one play/epic, one (auto) biography and one non-fiction book. By non-fiction I mean stuff like, IDC, something about mechanics or learning a language or whatever). Now, my problem is that I can't decide which ones to read and/or where to start.

To give you an idea of what I like, books that I've read before include the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan (and some of her other works), Bernhard Hennen's Die Elfen (FYI, I'm a native German speaker) which is quite high-fantasy like, Harry Potter, The Godfather by Mario Puzo, Le Moulin Rouge by Pierre La Mure, parts of Beowulf, the Epic of Gilgamesh and The Poetic Edda and of all things a biography about Eminem. In my weeb- days I also devoured the Spice and Wolf and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels.

I'll gladly wait for any answers and recommendations
Thanks in advance!

Whoa lad just read on the shitter and you will do it by mistake
>>

I know it's little, but between being at and sthdying for university every day, spending time with friends, family and girlfriend as well as working part time and giving supplementary lessons, I don't really have much time to read.
As for reading on the shitter, I take that time to check my mails and social media.

>For a New Liberty by Murray Rothbard
>Ethics of Liberty by Murray Rothbard
>Machinery of Freedom by David Friedman
>Democracy: The God that Failed by Hans Hermann-Hoppe

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I would warn you that Hoppe has an issue of thinking "things i like=libertarian and things i don't like (such as homosexuality)=incompatible with libertarianism"

Considering whether to dip for a $30 old model, ~$100 for PW/Glo HD, or all in for this Kobo Aura One for a first ereader.

Thoughts?

There is no reason to get premium ereaders, im convinced they exist only to cater to that tiny sub-section of high income earners that want to have the most expensive toy.

please ask /g/

polite sage

What's the point in living if you can't understand the sciences? How to deal with just not being smart enough to do anything that really matters?

Suggest philosophers who dealt with how to stop worrying and love mediocrity. No stoics pls.

You don't have to be armed to the teeth with equations and proofs to make sense of science or mathematics. William Thurston is the most wonderful proof that maths is just as imaginative as it is rigorously logical.

Is the idea of meme, as Dawkins proposed not a contradictory statement, just like relativism is.

Proposition: Every proposition is relative
This proposition itself is thus relative and not necessary true.

Proposition: Every proposition evolves and is regarded as true due to cultural/environmental circumstances

This proposition exists not because it is true but due to the environmental circumstances.

This seems to be the same kind of argument, am I wrong?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Yes, you are wrong. The first example is a paradox, but there is no self contradiction in the second. The key word is 'regarded' that you used in the second example. The idea of a meme has nothing to do with relativism.

>>8845040
>Every proposition evolves and is regarded as true

Has anybody here read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Due to being a procrastinating fucking retard, i have 15 hours to read the entire book and write about 5 quotes (700 word assignment) for my English course.
Is there anybody here who read this book and enjoyed it?
If so, would you like to help me with my assignment?

My 5 quotes need to be about:
>Characters
>The climax of the story
>The language of the book (way of speaking, storytelling characteristics)

Anybody feel up to it? I can't offer much as a thanks but my gratitude and boosting you in league of legends.

Just read it you moron. And because you are too dumb to get some quotes, despite having read it, i recommend you to snatch them from goodreads.
>>
its not that fucking long
>>
>>8844865
>>8844868
I'm really fucking sleepy and I can't read the entire book in one day. I'm not good at reading for a long time.
No one has to do it, just seeing if there's some dude with a passion for the book who would like to help a dumbass out.
If no one's up for it, i'll just snatch some quotes from various book analyzing websites and write my own interpretation of it.
