Several days ago, someone posted a list of the essential works of Western literature... Homer to Pynchon, if memory serves.
Anyone got it? I have a few hours off today, I'm going to read them all.

Which author is Charlie Kaufman's screenwriting comparable to?
Vonnegut
Kafka tbqh
>>8854193
He's quite original so I don't think there's an absolute equivalent but H. Murakami, Borges and Beckett come to mind.
How do I tell my cousin that I'm appalled by her upcoming publication?
>fucking hate my cousin
>cousin went to UAL, specifically chose England because she likes the British accent
>cousin wants to graduate UAL
>graduating project is her asking for anonymous anecdotal stories in the theme of love
>her sole contribution is to compile them into a book and try to make the book look pretty

What is some good literature about the founding fathers? People always say things like "When the second amendment was written they were only thinking about muskets!" which sounds true but I would like to learn more about how they thought.
Thanks guys.
the federalist papers
>>8853981
If your focus is more on the Constitution, then "Constitutional Law: Principles and Policies" is essential for constitutional law students. There also exists this online, interactive source:
http://constitutioncenter.org/interactive-constitution
But if your focus is on the Founding Fathers themselves, then The Federalist Papers and then pretty much whatever they wrote.

Thanks guys. I really want to learn about this subject. I feel somewhat it is my duty as an American.
Is it true that above all else, a good writer needs an intense ability to introspect and to be self-aware? Are the best writers also those with the most intrapersonal intelligence?
>>8853957
at least on an abstract level. There are tons of writers who are mostly assholes in real life. Gaddis' daughter wrote that he was basically mute and spent all of his time in his office reading and writing. She said something to the effect that he was so wrapped up in the virtual languages of books that he had forgotten how to speak ordinary English and basically never spoke to anyone in the house.
>>8853969
Wow I can really see where Gwyon came from, then. Where's the source for that? But anyways, I don't know if their being an asshole necesarily reveals a lack of self-awareness. The Recognitions is an intensely introspective book, in my opinion, about the relationship of the sort of fragmentary self and art in the modern world

It might be a bit of projection on my part but its from her novel called Swallow Hard. Read a review or the synopsis and see for yourself how autobiographical it might be.
>The definition of the true savage is that he laughs when he hurts you; and howls when you hurt him. - G. K. Chesterton
Here's an interesting way to describe savagery, basing it around self-awareness and the ability to reflectively analyze. Let's discuss.
>>8853944
i posted this in the last thread and some illiterate said it's "not meant to be taken literally," but i think that he's alluding through "howl" to wolves, implying that savages call for help when hurt, as well as implying that the civilized men suffer alone.

Quick! I need to get my sister a Christmas present. She aspires to be a journalist and is intrigued by North Korea. She's already read some books about North Korea, can /lit/ find me a relatively new but good book about North Korea? I don't want one that's outdated pls.
>>8853851
That looks very good! Thank you! I'll get that for her in addition to "Girl with Seven Names".
>>8853840
Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-Il wrote some good books, I forgot the titles though.
What does /lit/ think of this guy? Is he a weirdo?
>>8853803
He's a hack. If he were alive right now he'd be a cancerous /pol9k/ frogfaggot
>>8853803
I hear his poetry's good. His novels are second-rate by modernist standards, closer to Hardy except without the gothic-romantic genius. The few short stories of his that I've read were better, similar to Maugham but still lacking.
Can anyone give me a good sample of his verse?
>>8853822
That's false. He's a good writer, in a very quiet way. If you like Graham Greene, I think you'll like D.H. Lawrence.
Just finished reading Heart of Darkness.
What should I read next? Looking for something equally as enthralling.
Fuck off
