I'm 100 pages in, and I must say, I'm not enjoying it. Am I missing the point here?

People keep telling me it 'rewires' your brain.

I'm having doubts

Don't try to hard to "get the point" and just try to follow each passage as a valid story in its own right.
>>
Why are you exactly not enjoying it?

I'ts because of all the conspiracy theories that the book is making fun of? the point of the book is that you should not only question these theories but all the real "facts" that surround the stories like the JFK assasination.
>>
If you believe any of it, you might as well believe all of it.

If you don't believe all of it, you might as well believe none of it.

Either option is good.

Why do Americans have such a cult of success that there is a whole genre of books devoted to become rich and/or a celebrity? Why not just take satisfaction in your own work and a live a good life by your own estimation?

I don't get how anyone could be inspired by the manufacturer of electric cars.

***/lit/erary life: challenge mode -- "philosophy" unlocked***

Anyone else fall for the philosophy meme?

When I got to college, I studied philosophy so I could "discover the meaning of life"... My dad shoulda slapped the shit outta me! Least he's dead now so he doesn't have to look at me anymore... Wasted four years, went into debt, and am now unemployed. The only positive about the whole experience was losing my virginity. But I could have gotten a prostitue for far cheaper. Glad I'm over my acid phase tho. Spent far too many years having schizophrenic experiences and that I was gonna figure everything out if I just went a little further. Nope. Ended up in a psych ward. Would have been an excellent time to die. Nope. Just chaos and embarrassment.

All I wanna do is sit around and learn and think about shit. I'm re-reading Plato and Aristotle and am so inspired by their vision of philosophy. But the visions of both contain schools. Unfortunately, I don't have the money or the brainpower for more school. Otherwise I'd spend the rest of my life there. Besides, modern schools aren't much like philosophical schools. Philosophical schools were nearly religious in aim. Thus I am at a loss.

Often I feel I should join a monastery. Except I don't believe in Jesus or Buddha dogmatically. Plus then I'd be unable to find physical love. But perhaps this is better than being underemployed and a burden on friends and family? But by such logic suicide makes equal sense...

Sorry for ranting, I am drunk and forlorn. Holidays make me depressed. Please convince me to become religious or kill myself or simply share unemployed philosopher feels.

I double majored in political science in addition to philosophy, and am now gainfully employed in a profession that offers middling to high pay, and that I find to be validating work.

Your problem is not that you picked the wrong major, it is that you are a depressed ex druggie. Go out an make something of your life. There are plenty of gainfully employed philosophy majors who had the vim to make themselves useful. Whinging on a mongolian basket weaving forum isn't going to turn your life around for you.

Now that the smoke has cleared, what have you read this year that you'd recommend? What was a disappointment?

Recommend
>Yukio Mishima - Temple of the Golden Pavilion
I can't recommend this enough
>Roberto Bolano - 2666
This is one of those books that's going to be seen in the same stride as Gravity's Rainbow, Infinite Jest, The Recognitions, Ulysses, etc. a few decades from now
>William Gass - Middle C
Happiest I've ever been memed

Letdown
>J.M. Coetzee - The Childhood of Jesus
Terrible book, don't waste your time
>Hermann Hesse - Siddhartha
Expected a lot after all the hype on this board. An OK read, but only because it's so short.

Recommend
>Nabokov - Pnin
Beautiful prose, hilarious, sad. It really has everything I could want in a novel.

> Dostoevsky - Demons
Slow start but really the last 500 pages (esp last 200-300) are some of the best writing of his. Kept me on the edge of my seat while receiving philosophical enlightenment.
Letdown
> Nabokov - Lolita
I know most of you have already read this and I'm late on the game, but what a piece of horseshit. The prose is overwhelmingly rich, to the point of losing its effect. I get it, H.H. is a pretentious anti-hero...but Nabokov is able to be way more tasteful than this, and without the edgy pedophilia meme.
>>
>>8864067
>filtering your experince of a novel through buzzwords
>implying Humbert's prose ever loses its force
>implying it is Nabokov the one writing the novel

It's ok if you don't like it, but do better criticism next time.
>>
>>8864067
I disagree with you on Lolita.

Will make a proper refute when I'm not drunk and think properly.

Webfiction is any original work of fiction that is published solely online and is free. It is not usually fanfiction, although there are a few exceptions.

Unsong
http://unsongbook.com/
In the late 1960s, the Apollo 8 rocket to the moon was launched. After a successful launch, the rocket proceeded into the upper atmosphere where it hit the crystal sphere surrounding the Earth and cracked a hole in the sky. As stranger things begin happening, it becomes apparent that the Judeo-Christian creation myth was true, and the divine is returning to the world. The story follows a professional Kabbalist, who works as an office drone for a company that researches the divine names of god, which when spoken have a specific effect on the universe, and copyrights them so they can sell them for profit

Fine Structure
https://qntm.org/structure
Every year, a random person on Earth is struck by lightning and gains superpowers. Each new superhuman is twice as powerful as the previous one. This has been going on for ten years. Side note: despite the description, this is pretty high concept sci-fi, so if you enjoy that give it a try.

you are a pathetic memephagous, useless for both the internet and the world. why the fuck should a person with a minimum of intelligence come here to write "prove him wrong" out of nothing. WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT YOUR IDEAS ON LACAN, WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT YOU
>prove him wrong
kys memephagous

Who else here was smart, went to an elite school, is a student of the canon, and now has a hard time relating to people from back home?

I can appreciate pedestrian wisdom, and have no problem 'shooting the shit' with average folks, but inevitably people try to start 'intelligent' conversations about subjects which take them completely out of their depth. It's mind-numbingly frustrating, and makes me turn cold and distant.

I don't want to be haughty, but I can't be assed with trying to explain to nearly everyone how they are thinking inside of a tiny box.

Is this why Socrates was such a fake douchebag to everyone? With each passing day I get closer and closer into turning my conversations with friends and family into Socratic dialogues. I think I'm honestly just going to pretend I agree with everything anyone ever says and then ask leading questions to make them reconsider their beliefs, while taking subtle jabs at them to help preserve my sanity.

I feel you bro. If you want to know what I do, well, I put up silence in opposition to their speech. I don't give a shit if they consider me empty or inferior. I just laugh inside.
>>
Why exactly do you assume your thoughts are better than the ones of those you've talked to countless times? Odds are they just aren't articulating their thoughts well and you're too shallow to synthesize their points and instead listen to their messy diction instead of their thoughts and blow it all off as being thoughtless.

I don't read it. Even if it was written by the greatest author ever lived.

Or be lazy and sparknotes the fuck out of it.

Instead of sparknoting a book you could have read it and learn to develop an opinion about it.
