Reading the Iliad
I'm on the part where Menelaus gets 360 no-scoped in the dick and it's fucking badass I'm loving how descriptive everything is, every wound, every kill and every emotion is laid out in all it's essentiality.

Got White Noise. Fucking bowled over by it in all honesty and regret not reading it earlier. I think about death quite a lot so I identify with the narrator a lot personally. The critique of consumerism is great as well and Heinrich is great I loved that passage where they argued about the rain.
I'm reading A Christmas Carol
I like it a lot so far, Charles Dickens' voice is one of the most unique I've ever heard, he has that sort of wit that is really fun to read. God bless us, every one.
The Wendigo
Finished reading most of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Doyle. Are there any other authors or decent crime stories that you guys could recommend me?
>Crime recommendations
You could steal wine from some store and then kill someone. Remember to clean it later.

Dashiell Hammet's pretty comfy (Red Harvest, Maltese Falcon, Glass Key).
Guy worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency and everything.
Where does one go after reading Wittgenstein?
Is there any point in reading Ryle and Austin?
How the fuck does someone go beyond Wittgenstein after he literally ended the game?

Now you get into religion.

Already complete, mein fiend.

He didn't end the game
He was brilliant in realizing the key problems and limitations of language, but rather than solve the problems he abandoned the prospect of a solution
Besides, analytic philosophy didn't end with him. There is much to learn anyways
Are there any notable books that discuss the future of life on earth?

Why i feel stoned while reading philosophy? Wtf?
When you smoke weed, your mind expands, revealing features of reality that you never knew were there; similarly, philosophy (which means "love of knowledge") is a mind-expanding activity that leads you to consider things from a new perspective. It's no coincidence that people get very 'philosophical' when thehy're high on cannabis. Philosophy and weed both make you smarter, and they go hand in hand like good old PB&J.

Knowledge is entering the frontal lobe
When I smoke weed my mind essentially implodes and I begin feeling my memories being rewritten with false ones I make up as I go along. I also constantly think "wait, was I thinking about this last time I was high? I have no idea, maybe that's just another false memory."
Does this happen to anyone else? Am I just too smart for drugs?
Just finished reading/watching Perks of Being a Wallflower.
At the end, does Sam every know exactly what happened to Charlie? Him being in the hospital for while would obviously raise a red flag, but I'm assuming she knows?
Other than that I really liked the book and movie. Any suggestions for books with similar feels?
P.S. Emma Watson is bae

Is there any philosopher that addresses the "man is made through his own struggle" view of the world? The closest thing I can think of is stoicism, but most likely I'm missing out on some other names and works.
Also, just to meme it up and take the piss:
>any /pol/-approved books and philosophical works? :^)

Man I just saw you on /biz/ and the only solution I can think of is killing yourself for being such a pathetic fuck

That sounds like Nietzsche, not like Stoicism at all.

What is the best borges story?
Points off for saying, like, Tlön or Library of Babel.
Funes el memorioso is a favorite for more sentimental reasons. I think The Aleph is better though.
>>8884712
shakesqueer and his memory or whatever it's called
the one about that lil nigga funes was good also, he needed to blaze it was all
Oh man, I love every single story in Ficciones and El aleph.
The ones I reread all the time are Funes, El milagro secreto, La casa de Asterion and Las ruinas circulares. Pierre Menardis also excellent.

I had reached a point this year of despair and severe addiction. My outlook lead me to prison for a short stay. My third incarceration over the past five years; all for 6-12 months, nothing to drastic. I had never had the discipline e to read on my own Accord, however when forced upon me in high school I enjoyed the act immensely.
The facility I was at this last stay had something more than a simple "book cart" filled with James Patterson thrillers and I took full advantage of it. My first read was pic related.
I was blown away by the potential the resides in language as expressed in Fitzgeralds magnum opus. The use of imagery itself, more so than what the imagery alludes too, captivated quenched a long thirst within my soul to relate to others, and correlate my own shortcomings, through literature.
I understand my addiction needs to be continually addressed, however, I feel as though I've come into contact with greater beauties and truths than those attained through my opiate abuse. Literature remains a critical part of my recovery not only of addiction but also of my attempt to find significance in self destruction in a larger sense.
Never under estimate the power of literature.

>Incessantly I reread “King Lear,” and find what takes my apprehension to its limits. Nature dwindles to nothing. Familial love turns destructive. Intergenerational strife becomes murderous. In this bad autumn I echo Lear: “We cry that we are come unto this great stage of fools.”
so is king lear a decent read
>>8884525
More like king leer
sexist bigoted drivel
>Willy Shakesman writes some silly plays to entertain the peasants
>400 years later bored half-senile autists deconstruct every word and write 9000 books about it
Can anyone recommend some books for children? I've got a niece who does poorly in school and am trying to remedy that by getting her some interesting books to read together.
Any recommendations are appreciated but keep in mind this is for an 8 year old.

We're in 2016, approaching 2017 and the distinction between truth and untruth has been fully disrupted. Half of the nation believe the experts of climate science and the other half believe it all to be a hoax, a conspiracy theory. The enlightenment is over, isn't it obvious? Wouldn't another dark age be inevitable? We are image saturated. Bored out of our minds. The threat of bear attack or famine has all been wiped away, so here we sit with no incentive to keep a correspondence between reality and our mind.
