is it worth reading english translations of east asian literature?
or is the language and culture too different to get a proper reading without the original language?
is the "lost in translation" ratio much bigger than works translated from ancient greek? or arabic?
>>8960219
I like ideas, not pretty words.
>>8960219
it's all lost in translation
>>8960222
but can we fully grasp the ideas when the gap between the languages is so large?
why didn't schopenhauer killed himself or preached suicide in his philosophy?
Upanishads
>>8960207
If you actually read him you would know, but you haven't so you expect us to baby you.
>>8960225
I wish more anons were aware of the beauty in eastern philosophy and religion. It has honestly made me more content with life as well. I'm glad Schopenhauer found beauty and peace in hindu scripture too.

Is having a false sense of intellectual superiority a bad thing?
>>8960009
If it's false, yes.
What a stupid fucking question.
>>8960009
It is essential for all our self-esteem.
>>8960046
Wrong, a false sense merely imitates that which is essential but has no way of replacing it.
A question to the Nietzsche connoisseurs: If he was alive and sane today, what contemporary art would he enjoy? Would he enjoy early Animal Collective? Would he enjoy David Lynch films?
>>8959998
i don't think he would write about pop culture much
cus he's not a tool

agreed, dunno how tf it got 5 star reviews all over. they coulda just made a straight copy of the book's plot and it woulda been way better. they over-complicated the story and just made it super un-entertaining

Nobody hated it, because the patricians finally learned and didn't go to watch it.

Aleister Crowley. The ruin of his Abbey of Thelema still stands in the hills of Cefalu, which is clearly labeled at the north center of your map.
Yo homies, is it necessary to have read the Iliad before starting the Aeneid? I've read the Odyssey at least in parts but I've yet to touch any of the Iliad and I know the whole volume division structure of the journey elements in the first half versus the warfare elements of the second half of the Aeneid, but I'm wondering if there's gonna be anything I miss out on because of that.
Its always necessary to start with the Greeks.
>>8959961
Not necessarily no. But imo Iliad and odyssey are better anyways. Aeneid just played with the structure and elaborated a bit.

More like nwarr, but you don't say n-warr. It's kind of like the the nar in narwhal but you put a w sound before the n.
Whom here in Mensa? Do you think it's strange that there have not been much significant literary achievement by Mensa members? Is it a wank? I just qualified to join and I was wondering if any /lit/izens think it's worth it.

I'm not a genius like some people here, but I am a manipulative bastard (without the "bastard" part) and could pass every class with an 8,5 if I really tried. Of course I have the most important Physics test tomorrow (I HATE Physics, Maths, etc.) and I'm here writing about how goddamn lazy I am!
I'm in Mensa. Basically unless you want to go to meetups it's not worth joining. I hear the Halloween one is really good though. They send you a newsletter booklet every so often.
Just go on Meetup and join a board game group. 99% of the experience of being in Mensa without having to pay dues, and people there are probably more down to earth.

Good job anon. Momentum really picks up the further you get into the book. I'm quite ahead now and it is hard not to get more ahead.
I might get to chapter 100 tonight and then stop, read something else until the 18th and then finish it at the same time as everyone else.
Bump. Anyone around today?
