How do I get started in philosophy /lit/? I have some philosophers in mind that I want to learn more about, but I want to get a good general overview first, and not read someone's 20 book collection right away.
Should I read essays before books, and what about criticisms?

So I want to read Frazer's The Golden Bough before I dive into Girard but I don't know which edition to read.
My university has the complete unabridged 15 volume edition but it is extremely long and would probably take at least several months to read.
On the other hand, the Oxford abridged edition on Amazon is only about 1000 pages long so I suspect there is a lot of important material not included in it.
If you have read either or both of the editions, what was your experience like and which one do you recommend?
Huh, I just bought this on a whim yesterday because I remember it being one of my grandad's favourite books.
>get two pages in
>already no idea what the fuck is going on
He says the abridged version is enough to be getting on with if you don't want sources with notes on everything as you go along, if that's any help.
Unless you are a researcher, the abridged version will suffice. If you still want more after you finish, you can always go to the index of the complete version and look for the parts that interst you more or for the ones that you didn't read and think you will find interesting.

Attempted to make Freud's discoveries safe and appealing to the religious public, Nazi's, Americans; covered over the radicality of Freud; supplemented Freud with imaginary totemism
Third-wave Jungianism with its emphasis on Hegel and dialectics seems compatible with Lacan. I would like to integrate the two.
Are there any books or novels that evoke the same mood as the "videogame" Dear Esther?
Desolated European locations, very few characters, high linguistic register and cultured background without it being cervellotic, themes of loneliness and spleen, achetypical stories told by second-hand... everything drenched in an abundant dose of ambiguity.

Do you guys read multiple books at once, or just try to finish one book at a time?
>>8960575
I read many books at once. I hate it because I end up reading the same few books for a long time, but I can't help it.
Right now I'm reading 5 books. 1 poetry, 1 fiction, 1 political, 1 philosophical and 1 ancient text...Plus I always have my bibles out on my desk. When I read the bible I can't help but compare passages/translation/annotations etc.
Too scatterbrained. But like I said it gets frustrating and I end up in a slump sometimes where I don't want to read at all.

Exactly how many years are supposed to be between each part? That's left me confused a little.
Anyway:
The Part about the Crimes>The Part about the Critics>The Part About Fate>The Part About Almanfitino
Haven't read the last part yet but that's how I rank them.
>>8960302
IIRC the crimes section covers like 10 yrs or something. Obviously the Amalfitano parts and Fate and Critics all occur around the same time. The part about Archimboldi covers nearly 60 years.
>>8960317
Yeah, The Part about the Critics and Amalfiltano parts were the only ones I'm really clear about so far since they are linked so closely together they may as well take place in the same time frame.
What should I read next by Bolano? I was thinking of The Savage Detectives.
When I read 2666 I guess I never thought about the time but just kinda picked up on it from context. I'm pretty sure somewhere in there BolaƱo says the murders were over a 10 year span. The rest seemed to follow fine just with reading.
