Why do writers bother denoting their work under flaccid microgenres like modernism, post-moderism, mumblecore etc., when all writing can simply be filed under either liberal, conservative, leftist or right wing?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Flaccid microgenres, desu. There is one method of categorization - cuck and non-cuck.
>>
All writing can simply be filed under "writing".

Simple broad categories can be nice but they lack precision.

why are you posting such inane topics when your previous thread was so unsuccessful?

the only thing you're being is a menace, and /lit/ will punish you for it. not due to feminimity, not due to politics, but due to the nonsense you're cluttering this board with. please just go away. unless you genuinely wish to talk of literature, say, your favorite book, or author, then be my guest.

"The dread of death---the great poison to the happiness, but the great restraint upon the injustice of mankind; which, while it afflicts and mortifies the individual, guards and protects the society."
What did he mean by this ?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
he should have explained it clearer, being deliberately obscure is a bad thing
>>
That in the end, death is also the end for bad people and bad institutions perish aswell.
>>
>>8967373
Fear of death and what may come after it makes men repentant for their actions that might hurt others. This is a check on the fulfillment of individual desires but makes living together as a society more bearable than if this were not the case.

So even though I'm no where near finishing Cardinal of the Kremlin and the last 2 books I've read with the exception of the finest hours I'm looking for something to read thats Star Wars related (legends or not doesnt really matter) but i would like some recommendations on books that either take place in the old republic era, the pre clone wars stuff like the book about plageious or relating to qui gon or obi, clone wars if the main character is someone like Alpha 17, Rise of the empire/fall of the republic,or even doing heir to the empire, but my problem is i dont know where i want to start and what with.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but id just figure this would be the best place to ask

>>
Don't.

Licensed media is shit.

Read something like Leigh Bracketts C.L. Moores planetary romances, they are both influences on Lucas - Brackett wrote the first draft of Empire and Moores character Northwest Smith is basically Han Solo on Mars & Venus.

You can try some other Golden Age space opera

Or move onto New Wave reinventions like Samuel R Delanys Nova and Babel-17 and Einstein Intersection, or Frank Herbert's Dune.

Then there is the modern nu-Space Opera. Vernor Vinge, Stephen Baxter, Ian M. Banks, Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamilton, Dan Simmons, Anne Leckie, etc

Avoid anything published by Baen.

How's the thrawn trilogy? Bought the series used for cheap, still haven't read it - been sitting on my shelf for awhile. For some reason I tend to hold a stigma towards it because there was nothing really comparable to it when it came out, so of course its good at least we have star wars again

no, he's a meme of who.
>>
>>8967272

we're not allowed to admit to liking him here because 1) he wrote works that were anti-racism, 2) he is commonly taught in American middle school and high school, and 3) his books aren't 1000-page postmodern "masterpieces" with 100 pages of footnotes

Lurk.

Infinite Jest is just a dude who wasted a lifetime meant for experience on sitting in creative writing seminars drunk on Pynchon.

I just imagine him sitting at a desk seething in the shadow of Gravity's Rainbow like all American writers have struggled with at some time, popping a bunch of pharmaceuticals (he hasn't even lived enough to be a proper addict, his drug dealer is a fucking doctor and his television) and getting all excited, and hopping over to a typewriter even though he lives in the age of computers, hoping that he can cobble his tennis lessons, addiction to TV, creative writing classes, and negligibly interesting months wasted in a rehab center in his late twenties.

This also is the death of Rimbaud, in a way, when "write what you know" becomes the central truth, and we must know plodding autobiography, and poetry is replaced by outdated Merck pharmaceutical manuals.

All great aspects of art die in Infinite Jest.

I never know what people are trying to accomplish with these poorly researched and hugely speculative posts. Do you want to go "WOah! You're such an amazing psychologist. So impressive, my dude!"

There is not much content here. Just a lot of know-it-all retardation.

When did you realize that the next cultural movement will be backward-looking and a "return to tradition," /lit/?

There is, logically, nowhere to go after postmodernism. What comes after what comes after modernism? There is nowhere forward to move now, except right into a wall. The only direction to go is backward.
