How should one start with the Greeks? Let's settle this once and for all. As someone looking to start, and tired of missing allusions to Greek mythology, I've got myself the Iliad. But I want to ensure I know enough about the culture I'm reading to understand the significance.
Here are two charts that have been posted on this board. Both have been submitted as accurate, and both have been criticized by others. We're going to decide in this thread what you truly need to read to start with the Greeks.
pick something and read it instead of pussyfooting around like a faggot and making excuses not to read shit

Cats aren't like that. They are such proud creatures, they think the whole house is theirs and we are their providers and servants. Yes, they love us, but they're not that dependent. Actually, they're too busy being cats and doing cat things to think like that.
Now, the dogs...

>no one else in his family is a cat
He doesn't know that though.

why r cats retardumb lol
do they see any creature they socialise with in a familial sense as a "cat"? since i assume they don't do the same for prey and predators. they also seem to act differently around humans than other cats though.
Do you overuse contractions, you philistines?
You're a faggot.

Has anyone ever been as correct as Malthus? When will his crises occur, or is it already occurring?
>>8971083
We've been kicking it down the road for a long time. Eventually either one of our ad hoc fixes will backfire, or we won't implement it in time. Impossible to say exactly when it will happen, but Trump being elected at the same time as the ice caps going into overdrive makes me think it will be in the next few years.
>>8971125
>the ice caps going into overdrive
Melt or freeze? whats the over under?
>>8971083
malthus was wrong as hell you fucking idiot, his predictions didn't come true over centuries and now we are going to run out of resources but it's not overpopulation, it's drastic overconsumption by certain small segments of the population
kys if you're so worried about overpopulation
The more I read the more I feel like everything else is a complete waste of time. However, I still feel the need to be entertained a few hours everyday as reading all day is monotonous. What do you do to fill in the void. I go for walks sometimes. Pro-tip: Interacting with people is out of the question.
If I'm relaxing at home and not reading I'm usually playing video games. They're a waste of time, sure, but I find them more stimulating than television.
I can relate. What do you read?
Eventually you will realize that everything that doesn't envolve enteraction with other people is a complete waste of time.
What's a good book that deals with how shit humanity is

Are there any books about a struggle for power in an anarchist state? Kind of like pic related, but not shit.
>>8970889
that book is really shit
>>8970889
I am also interested in OP's subject, and I can support the claim that this book is shit.
>>8970891
Dhalgren wasn't about an anarchist state, it was about sucking biker cock.
Why are Don Gately's chapters so much better than Hal's?
>>8970878
they aren't they are fucking boring.
>>8970883
yah I know Hal's chapters are boring as fuck
how do i get a better understanding of stream of consciousnesses? it makes no sense
>>8970865
I think making no sense is one of the most important pillars of stream of consciousness and the modernist movement as a whole.
Embrace the complexity and nonsense of this stream of consciousness, as it is an irrational, yet crude and bona fide, depiction of the innermost workings of the human psyche.
>hear people talk about how hard stream of consciousness is
>plebs fucking lol
>open portrait of the artist
>fucking what the fuck
>feel like a total pleb
fuck your mother
fuck me harder daddy
What is this cover supposed to signify? It looks like a dungeon map for Skyrim.
Please delete this. It's kind of embarrassingly obvious and you'll only end up looking more retarded the longer this stays up.

Requirements for the book being retarded
>exclude accidental retarded books like John Green's shit
>contents must be absurd or the language must be absurd
>Post dl link so that people can check the book out
Also, no Chuck Tingle (exception is posting Chuck Tingle dl links)
inb4 OP is a faggot for chossing Chuck tingle book and then saying no Chuck Tingle books

Fuck you, man, and fuck your fucking fag ass rules
I think most here probably agree the community on Goodreads is shit, but does anybody use it (or some other similar service) to keep a reading log/maintain their backlog?
It's alright once you get past the basic books and yeah

What are some books that cover the history of Western philosophy from post-Hegel to contemporary times? (I mean anything and everything, continental and analytic)
History of Philosophy by Fredrick Copleston
>>8970746
What is the point of studying the "history" of philosophy?
Why not just read philosophers?
>>8972025
Several reasons. You might be trying to get a feel for the terrain before deciding what to read. Your interest might not be in philosophy directly, but in how the historical context produces certain ideas rather than others. You might find it valuable to know what sort of world a particular philosopher inhabited and what ideas he was responding to before diving in. Are you really so stupid that you answer rhetorical questions?
