>"Elitist", a politically supercharged word, is almost invariably another sour-grapes word, at least when used to denigrate people who insist on a high standard. The distinction, I believe, is that the elitist desires the best; the snob wants other people to think he has, or is associated, with the best. Delight in excellence is easily confused with snobbery by the ignorant.
- "Snobbery", Joseph Epstein
So, anons, lets all be elitists.

My wife and I read this on a lark (you will finish it in a few hours). We enjoyed Girls because it was self deprecating, and she was much more aware of the world around her than she seems now. Anyways, her burgeoning mental illness is quite obvious, her sex crimes clearly and naively stated, and her sexual conquests quite disgusting. You also begin to realize she was raised in one of those households where if a boy starts wearing dresses because he sees his sister doing it, the parents start injecting him with hormones and calling him sally. I cant imagine reading it as a fan, but as a detached observer it had its moments, probably unintentional.
Its a bizarre work, but has its amusement value. Pic related gave me similar feels.

Fellow authors: to what extent does your work write itself? How do you go about balancing authorial intent and cosmic influence?
i once had the experience of my characters deciding to take a side-trip to a market, and it threatened to derail the entire narrative. i struggled, got them back on track, and later i discovered that the market trip was absolutely necessary and foreshadowed three important aspects of the story.
how can a person write when important aspects of it develop unconsciously? that'd be like starting to bake a cake without knowing how you were going to get it into the oven.

don't feel too bad that the school newspaper wouldn't publish your poem. next time, don't use Hawkwind lyrics and pretend you wrote them, Andrew.
What's the best complete edition of Shakespeare? I want one without those gay-ass commentaries and without excessive footnotes.

Just read them online or buy the cheapest one available then.

Signet Classics?
Not OP, I want one with footnotes, but not excessively (ie doesn't fill a page). A glossary and perhaps some short essays would be nice as well.

So I was wondering if podcast script writing was at all acceptable here. The subject matter of the story is Americana Urban Legends, Cults, Conspiracy Theories, Serial Killers, Strange Happenings, etc.
I research the story, and if I live close enough I go to the location in question. Otherwise I email folks involved if they are still living or their relatives if I can find them.
I have thus far been using the following format:
>Smaller introductory story, normally 5-10 minutes
>Main header story 20-30 minutes
>Mini story as a break, normally 'small facts" 3-5 minutes
>Finish main story 10-20 minutes
>Out going story with strange ending, leave ending for the following week 5-10 minutes
So it ranges normally from 45 minutes to 1:15.
I have recorded four episodes and am planning on not beginning releases until I have a few more. It is actually pretty difficult gathering 45 minutes to an hour of content.
Anyone have thoughts on this? Too long? Too short? Should I focus on a single story? Any suggestions on content gathering?
Also I am having a very hard time figuring out a good title. My working title thus far has been "American Oddities", but that's boring.

>Americana Urban Legends, Cults, Conspiracy Theories, Serial Killers, Strange Happenings
Too broad, any one of these would have unlimited content. Just like, folk legends of the Northeast is enough to fill tons of shitty books at every colonial times type re-enactment.
Hi /lit/
I'm a high school teacher and have been told from 'above' that I need to work in 'uplifting' and 'cheerful' short stories into my curriculum. I teach in a very low socio-economic community and the thinking is that these students need to be shown alternatives to their current situation, not just reflections of it - so stories of drunken parents, sexual abuse, violence etc need to be avoided.
My problem is, I don't really remember any *good* short stories that have an uplifting theme.
Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted
