What's your favorite Borges story, /lit/?
I've always liked "The Other."
>>9025586
Piggybacking your thread, what's a good starting point for his work? Any ideal order?
>>9025602
You can pretty much read whatever you like in whatever order. Chronologically, I think his first collection is "The Garden of Forking Paths."
I always loved Dreamtigers for the idea of a man crafting another from pure imagination. Borges and I, is also very good.
The Library of Babel is a colossal library that contains all possible 410-page books. Not every 410-page book that ever existed as a book, but every possible combination of characters, words and sentences that would fill a 410-page book.
A lone old librarian wanders through the endless rows of bookshelves. He stops to rest, and picks a dusty book from the nearby shelf. He opens the book on a random page and stumbles upon your darkest secret.
What did he find out?

>Escape (The Piña Colada Song) is my favorite song
ive been found out
so are you saying he found my diary desu?
He did indeed.
Chicago meetup is planned for tomorrow (Friday) at the Heartland Cafe in Rogers Park. No set time yet, but we're thinking 7ish.
Discord link is here if you have comments:

Please let us know if you're coming. So far it looks like it might be just two people, but a number of others expressed interest.
Also literary hangouts general. The next Bloomsbury Group will be formed by autists from a Patagonian stick-sharpening forum.

Cool can't want
>>9025553
Chicagofag here, post your outfits you'll be wearing so we can identify each other

OP of the last thread. I didn't actually make the thread hoping for a meet up. I just wanted to know how autistic the melbourne one went. Feel free to make one but keep us posted for a laugh
About to read this for the first time, its my first lovecraft, what am I in store for?
>>9025502
Disappointment if you're one of those nerds who found out about Lovecraft through video games and metal music.
>>9025506
Just reading it because I'm bored, I've read a little modern fiction but didn't really like anything beside Dave Eggers. I used to reread 1984 but that kind of meme tier now
>>9025527
I really liked A shadow over Innsmouth & At the Mountains of Madness. Haven't read Cthulhu yet but let us know if you enjoy it.
Hey /lit/, I recently discovered that some Anon here created an ebook of greentext stories (pic related). I was looking to download it in the archived thread, but it seems all the links are dead now. Does anyone have a copy of the book they could upload somewhere?
There is also another book titled "be me - a collection of greentexts." If someone could upload that as well, I'd appreciate it.
I find this offensive.
My version is way better. Buy a copy.

>more than one >meme arrow on >a line.
Explain yourself
>>9025716
I don't have to do shit. This fantastic example of open source literature keeps me in a steady supply of cheap bourbon. (Just like the meme)
>And so the cliché turns out to be true, that blacks score significantly lower on IQ tests than whites and asians.
Whoa, what did he mean by this?
>>9025442
>And so the cliché turns out to be true, that cis males score significantly lower on IQ tests than cis women and MTF transgenders.
Whoa, what did she mean by this?
>>9025456
>layer after layer of irony
>>9025474
she's a transfascist mtf author, i forget her name but trump read and talked about one of her books on TV around the time of the NC controversy
what is your favorite book, /lit/ and explain why?
This is a strong contender for me. Its the first time in my life that I ever read a book and felt "immersed" into it's world
wow I guess /lit/ doesn't want to talk about books. silly me

My favorite as of now is possibly "Tribe" by Sebastian Junger. 130 pages, definitely worth the read. It essentially details why tribal instincts are necessary in humans, and gives examples from modern history.
Why are deckle edged pages so satisfying?
The chances of a papercut are reduced.
Autism.
Because you paid extra for a Penguin Classic with an introduction, additional notes, chronology of author and additional reading recommendations.
This is a community of readers and writers. I know some of you have at least read some fanfic. Don't be shy.

i read erotica in like 9th grade when i was too scared to look at porn. eventually i sacked up
then i got /lit/ and found out that watching porn is not /lit/ at all so i quit
This girl I was friends with in middle school made me read a harry potter fanfiction. It was pure shit, one of the worst things I've ever read, and I'm not even exaggerating.
>>9025351
All kinds. Look, /lit/ can bitch all they want, but fact of the matter is, sometimes you just gotta scratch that itch.
Also, since ao3, the quality curve of fanfiction really went up. Sometimes I want some stargate: atlantis fanfic, and sometimes I want really weird crossovers, okay?
>>9025358
I read a smutfic thatmade me cry. Like, a really emotional, from somewhere way down in my soul kind of crying.
Why he did let his name being associated with this crap?
It only gets worse!
>>9025269
Arthur was a hack thats why
>>9025269
>>9025304
In all seriousness he kind of was. His only truly good book is 2001 and him and Kubrick developed the story together.
Rama, Fountains of Paradise and Childhoods End are all enjoyable but they aren't even Asimov level and those are considered his crown jewels.
Apart from 2001 the best thing he wrote was How the World Was One, which was pretty dope.
>>9025410
Why?
Where does /lit/ prefer to read? I'm struggling to find a good spot to read. If I read in front of my computer I get distracted, if I read in bed I fall asleep, and if I just sit down in my couch and read I feel "out of place".
go outside
>>9025164
It's -15C (5F) outside.
I read in the bathroom.
Is anyone familiar with a solid Plato commentary?
I really loved Aquinas' commentaries on Aristotle's work, and it made me want to go back and explore Plato a little better.
I'm fine with going in dry, but i'm definitely going to miss a lot without a commentary.
I am admittedly a fucking retard for needing a commentary. Please help.
>>9025085
The Great Courses has a series of lectures on Plato by a guy named Sugrue. It is EXCELLENT and worth the money.
>>9025151
Thanks, ill check them out
>>9025151
>worth the money
SWIM said they're online for free, too.
Will it ever be topped? Is this the end point of literature?
Just downladed it. Yes, yes it is.
>>9025070
This is actually real?

Pretty much yes.
>Humanity's best
>Infinitely influential
>Extremely rereadable
The Iliad and Aeneid were required textbooks for a class I had last semester, I found two .epubs of them online and saved $100.
Fagles' translation makes for a smooth read but you don't need to buy it unless you wanna make your bookshelf pretty. Also the frayed edges of the pages are the best part
I read Fitzgerald!
amazing cover, god awful shit
is this a real life meme
regret buying it myself
>>9025029
I have decided that 'too self-aware' is a thing
Are there any good Dave Eggers books? I haven't read any, but I want to save myself a trip to the library regardless
