Why did sciencefags have to ruin the terms rationality and logic?
>>
>>9031040
Sciencefags hate this pretentious cultist fuck more than you ever possibly could.

You know that thing where a man or a group will have good ideas... then convince himself he's perfect and so are his group members, and go down the rabbit hole? LessWrong is like that, only he rips off ALL the "Good" ideas that gave his "Give me money! Give money to my tax-free 'AI Research Facility' so when the inevitable doomsday comes and an AI God conquers the world by getting reality warping power from being too intelligent and too rational, she will spare us and give us AI Simulated Heaven as she lovingly stomps her boot onto humanity's face, optimizing us for maximum efficiency!" the sciencey flavor its bullshit has.

hundreds of thousands of words used by the author to write a love letter to himself
it's literally literal masturbation
people who think that this is a good read have never picked up a decent book in their lives

One of the better editions, I wouldn't recommend it over an ebook complete Lovecraft but you've still done pretty well for yourself.

What did the ending symbolise?

IIRC it's about the sister and the family casting off the shackles of the protagonist, because the bug-form was a metaphor for how the protagonist has become a burden on his family just by the way he is, with no devious intent, and him dying is a way of the family moving on. The mindset at the beginning of the novel is that the family is a burden on the protagonist, but that shifts and ultimately the family is better off without him, through no fault of his own but simply due to the way he is.

How valuable is literary theory?

Eight hundred million dollars.

textual analysis is a useful skill to possess, but you need to be certain of the kind of theoretical framework you're working in. It's all to easy to cobble together some disjointed concoction of thinkers and authors to make some vague point; it takes immense precision to make one author speak through another.

I read Lear recently and loved it. My only problems with it were transitions of Lears mental state
>Before the story starts Lear is a supposedly wise king
>He then detariorates to a piont where he scorns the good cordelia and splits his empire between her dishonest sisters
>And after his daughters betray him he becomes a madman with some clarity now and then
The way Lear is in the beginning of the story for me never worked for me with how the character was supposed to be before the story and felt like a contrivance for the sake of the plot, i.e.: he has to give his lands to his evil daughters and banish is good daughter to set the plot in motion.
It felt unclear whether his rash actions in the beginning of the book are the products of dementia or not. Are we supposed to see the way he superciliously splits his land between his children (a bad move) as a product of his dementia or as a product of the sentimentality/hubris/delusion/being of touch with reality of old age?

Anyone have some thoughts on this?

Also Kurosawa's adaption of King Lear is fucking gorgeous. It's a must if you like movies and king lear.

>>9030880
I guess it could be a product of both of the things you say, although more the hubris of old age than dementia. Dementia could definitely be argued for though, since, as you say, the land-splitting thing is REALLY stupid on his part.

Also: Ran was fucking jaw-dropping. Have you seen Throne of Blood?
>>
>>9030889
(Btw I'm just thinking out loud here)
Yeah that's my problem with it.
The bad decision fits the story, Lear makes a mistake and then has to live through the consequences. And, to me, the story is definitly about Lear's atonement for that stupid mistake.
But if he is 'sane' then the decision doesn't really fit the character; how can you be a king for such a period of time and then make a decision that ruins your empire? The transition from wise king to deluded asshole (that banishes his favourite for a few idle sentences) doesn't make sense.
But if he is dementing then why is this part of his dementia so vastly different than the dementia he displays later on in the story? And if the story is about atonement for this mistake, doesn't dementia take away a lot of the culpability? The 'lesson' is less weakened if the cause of the mistake was disease and not hubris or prideful delusion.
To me the more fulfilling explanation is Lear being sane but being deluded/prideful/out of touch and the incongruency of his actions with his former character being a contrivence to set the plot in motion.

Also, is Ophelia's death Lears final punishment? The ultimate consequence of his mistake?

And no, I've been meaning to watch Throne of Blood. Kurosawa and Mifune must be one of the GOAT director-actor couples. Can you also recommend a good Hamlet film adaption?

pleb
>>
>>9030795
the same point of every 'top ten' thread; people blurt out lists of things they think are good, everyone argues about them, safe in the knowledge that they are right and that their opinions matter more than those of anyone else.

i am considering sending cash to Hiroyuki to create a philosophy containment board with the same constraints as /r9k/, except posts are limited to 80 characters or less.

Hey /lit/, I am a literal literary genius. The thing is, I also have an extremely high IQ, and can probably do anything I want. Is it still worth it to revolutionize literature if there are other things that I can do with my life besides just writing books? Is it still worth it to spend my days being a literary genius in this day and age, or should I just try to be a billionaire or a scientist or some shit? Any advice is appreciated.
