What other books are like The Prince, that will teach me how to manipulate or gain advantage of people?
>>9037211
People here are gonna recommend you self-help shit like "Power." Not that it's a bad recommendation, but it's only a small part of the process. That's the attitude, but what you want is the method, and for that what you want to read is literature on deception. Deception IS manipulation (plus persuasion, of course), for an effective method is all about crafting narratives.
And for that, you'll want to read the .pdf and works listed here:
https://thirdcops.wordpress.com/tag/deception/
tl;dr learn from Freud, Edward Bernays, academic psychology, intelligence agencies, and governments. That self-help shit is PUA-tier.
>>9037211
I haven't read this in a long time, I don't remember the Prince giving any instruction on how to specifically manipulate

Is Kafka's short story The Judgment semi-autobiographical?
>>9037182
Obviously. The real question is if there's any value to reading the text with this understanding in mind.

Does sleep deprivation help or hinder your creativity personally?
>>9037078
:^)
>>9037078
Sleep deprivation is pretty much a subject I'm interested in. I find I'm more alert a day after I've had sleep and can focus better but if I go on any longer 2-3 days then I find my movements and speech getting sluggish. As much as I hate contemporary culture for making it cool to marathon TV shows and movies, has anyone just stayed up for a day or two doing nothing but reading?
After 20-24 hours of being awake I'm not capable of doing much of anything, much less try to create something.
Is reading an intellectual activity?
No. Source: i spent all day reading this board.
>>9037026
Depends on what you are reading
>>9037044
Does engaging in /lit/ threads and discussions make one more of an intellect than someone who doesn't ?
I just started The Stranger and I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Does it get better?

>>9037025

What is /lit/s opinion of this book and Jules Verne in general?
>>9036991
Verne and Dickens are complete and utter trash. They are the superhero movies of their time, 0 substance, simple ideas yet effective enough to engage children and manchildren alike and poorly executed plots.
>>9037073
/thread
if you're old enough to have found 4chan you've already outgrown Jules Verne
>>9036991
Good exposition of the world at the time, I had to do a lot of googling. There's nothing much beyond it, but it's good at what it does.
Any bible fags out there have a reason to why God would want France to win the 100 years war via Joan of Arc?

He wouldn't

>most authors have been to Ivy League schools or schools with extremely low acceptance rates
Guys..
Who are some amazing authors who never sucked everyone's dick in school and went to a state uni?
Only one i know of is Oates.
Is there some sort of favoritism by publishers?
>>9036958
>Who are some amazing authors who never sucked everyone's dick in school and went to a state uni?
there is none, nobody relevant anyway
being born into privleged background doesn't only entail wealth, it inlcludes your childhood experiences and education.
If you didn't growp up with /lit/ parents encouraging you to read, I would give up. Honestly I feel like 60% of /lit/ is the lower-middle class waters who attended shitty state schools, played vidya until they were 18, and then suddently broke into literature when they realised they were wasting their life. But the years of drudgery and bad habbits have already taken their toll. 4chan is where failures come to die. I seriously belive this.
>>9036994
agreed. anyone who disagrees and says "but.. but... -insert random author here- started reading late!!!" it's called an exception, idiot, the one that you will not be

Machado de Assis is one of the most important brazilian writers of all time and he never went to university and barely studied, he did it all himself.
Also, he was the son of a washerwoman and hsi father was a painter of walls and son of freed slaves.
(This is 19th century)
>inb4 no one knows about him
Well if you are a uncultured twat you won't know, if its to meme:

ITT: show writers/philosophers that looked either particularly "writerly" or "philosopher-ish" or particularly "unwriterly" or "unphilosopher-ish"
For example, Beckett looks so much like a "wise writer" that it's almost like he's a fictional character, whereas Kafka just looks like another dude at the bank. Nietzsche with his mustache looks "philosopher" as fuck, whereas young Nietzsche (seriously look him up) looks like a chubby dude who plays too many video games

oh, i don't know, why don't you petition Hiroyuki for a philosophy board so you can stop silting up /lit/ with your puerile freshman musings? fucking philosophags. GTFO and take Zizek with you. he smells like rancid goat cheese.
What book(s) should I read to be come a deeper, more philosophical, more articulate person? I'm doing this half for myself and half to appeal to women more.
