What is the best english translation for the Tanakh and the Torah?
Thinking of pic related and the JPS Torah
Also any other essential Jewish texts before going into Christianity?

>the Tanakh and the Torah
For what it's worth, the Torah is part of the Tanakh (it's the T; the N is the prophets and the K is the other writings)
>any other essential Jewish texts before going into Christianity
No and while we're at it the Tanakh is the Old Testament, so you could just get a Bible. The Gospel of Matthew in particular does a nice job of making connections to the OT, along with others like Romans, Hebrews, and Revelation.

Jewish scholars are some of the best at hermeneutics but the texts they derive their analysis from are batshit crazy. I would only recommend reading the KJV plus apocrypha, depending on your chosen denomination.

The most sought benefit people try to derive from reading seems to self improvement,
I read around 20-30 books a year mostly because I want to learn more about the world and other people. But I feel like I'm reading passively. I feel like I basically haven't changed since I was 13 and may have gotten worse personality wise (I'm a bit of a lazy, good for nothing prick and have no sense of morals).
I don't expect reading to help me get a job or a girlfriend or anything, but have you found reading has improved your life? If so, how?
Have you been "actively" reading? How do you do that and if not that, what other ways have you let reading improve your life? Should I read something other than fiction, history and economic books? Should I finally figure out how to read poetry and plays? Will that help?
Oh boy, we got a live one
No.
Yes.
Just finished A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens and it [spoilers]just wasn't that good[/spoiler]
Sure the opening line is great, there are some great passages (when the child gets run over by the marquis for example), the plot works (even if it felt predictable at times and I wasn't invested).
But other than that, jeez. I didn't care for most of his characters, especially the 'good' ones that are absolutely perfect in every aspect. I enjoyed Dickens' view of the post revolution society (a lot of senseless killing but with a sense of 'they are lashing out because of years of oppression, this could happen again') but it still lacked a lot of depth for me: most of the french characters ended up acting like Evil Characters. Also, I didn't feel like I was actually in London or Paris but more like I was reading a stage play.
I went in expecting a masterpiece and I ended up with an ok book.
What are your thoughts?
I got about two thirds in and just dropped it desu
usually I finish books I don't like that much if I'm in far enough but this really was an exception
You're just not that smart.

I’ve just woke from a terrible dream (I had a natural drive to say malodious even though I have now been informed that that is not a word and I am a cunt) At my bus stop, thinking about the rather good events of the last day. The gril who sits in front of me in-front of me in my last class had smiled at one of my stupid jokes. (She is not single, but we talk often and have the same interests. This gives me casus belli to dream of railing her sylvan guts into mush before I punch out her Chertish little teeth with my cumshot.) I looked over to the seat next to me and saw a woman shivering (Frumpy, hook nosed but in an Italian way rather than a yahoodi one. I know a lot of people hate the Jews but I hate Italians more. All together not great.) It was rather cold and she had not worn a jacket. I offered her mine. Some time passed and she did not respond. I became aware of the fact that I could for some reason not pull back the hand holding out my jacket. She looked at me and I dreaded the idea of her asking “Why is your hand out“ and in so asking imply that I had some malicious intent. But, no, she just started incoherently screeching, sweating, lactating, whooping, and crying all at the same time. I smiled and no one else noticed. Yet more time went by and I thought “where is our bus.“ I was still unable to move my arm and she was still wailing about. Eventually the bus came and her and I got up at the exact same time and walked in tandem on the bus. The ride went on, neither of us able to stop the things we were doing (both of which seemed absolutely disgusting to me), and the bus stopped at her apartment complex. We got out our pair continued on and once we reached her door she stopped, said thank you, took my jacket, and went inside. My arm fell limp and I thought to myself that I really need a cigarette. I went for my pocket and of course my pocket and my jacket were both gone. I could not believe that I would ave given away my cigarettes so I decided that this must be a dream and began to walk to the drugstore to buy more.
Should I white about this in more depth or is the idea shit? Also I know that the writing is shit and there was a lot I left out. Pls no bully.

I just read Catcher in the Rye the other day and although I did connect with Holden in some aspects, I really didn't enjoy the book at all. To those of you who enjoyed it, can you please explain to me why you did? I'm legitimately curious.

I saw myself in a lot of ways. It would have been a perfect book for me at 16. Its just entertaining, like a more serious version of A confederacy of Dunces. You just enjoy the ride and see what ends up hapening to Holden.
I really liked the part where he is sleeping on his old teachers house and he sort of molests him.
Oh and the rape ending with Phoebe is just brutal, totally worth reading it for that part.
