hi guys, i would like to get into reading but i am just too slow

i tried reading europe by davies but almost none of the torrent of information stuck and i gave up after exerting a considerable amount of effort and only getting through the greeks chapter in 2 inconsistent months of work on it

i tried reading margin of safety by klarman (how hard could it be/?? its like 200 short pages long) and only got partway thru the first 2 chapters

i think i am conditioned to hate reading, every time i sit down with a book i start feeling very tired and cant keep focus. it takes me forever and i am constantly counting how many pages i have until the end of the section

i think it is because im conditioned to want instant gratification/constant stimulation by new media like internet and youtube videos

what do i do

should i commit sudoku

Meditate for half an hour each day

Spend your time on something productive or personally rewarding, doesn't have to be books. It could even be video games so long as you are consciously engaging with them instead of just passively trotting along.

And read shit you want to read. Not shit you want to HAVE read, but shit you actually want to sit down and read about. If you have no personal interest in the material it becomes a total chore.

Out of curiosity, what does your average day look like?

Is learning a second language to a high level of proficiency worth it? And by that, I mean, of course, are there significant enough differences between original texts and translated texts to warrant learning other languages (of course it depends on the language). I've spent some time learning Arabic, German, and French to intermediate proficiences, but I can't see myself pouring thousands of more hours in to reach the advanced stages in these languages, particularly Arabic, if the pay-off is not real, and I of course, at my current level of proficiency, am not in the position to be a judge.

So, people with a high proficiency in a foreign language, are translations shit? I don't really care about learning a language to talk to people or listen to television shows or anything, so literature is the only redeeming point for me, that and it is fun, but it being fun alone cannot justify it, I think.

Is learning a foreign language worth it?If not, is learning a distant foreign language worth it?

Does anyone have a link to The Best Poems of the English Language by Harold Bloom? I have looked everywhere for it (bookz, libgen, aaaaarg etc).

>>9094551
there's some shakespeare in there, but much more than that. everything from Chaucer, Pope, Wordsworth, Milton, Yeats. it's really great and I would recommend it.
>>
>>9094551
It's about 950 pages and Shakespeare covers pages 111 to 134.

Has anybody else here read "The Phenomenology of Perception" by Maurice Merleau-Ponty? I'm reading it for a class and it is honestly the most opaque, confusing, and intractible work I've ever encountered. Honestly, reading it makes me wonder if I'm having a fucking stroke. It reads like it was written by a buzzword-dropping computer program.

Anybody who's studied or read this guy before, what was helpful for you? Can anybody recommend any contemporary discussion of his work?

>>
There's a small book called Causeries (= "small talks"), which is the text Merleau-Ponty read on the radio during some program, and it's the best "introduction" to his thought, by himself. You can find it online for free, the english translation is called "The world of perception".

Apart from that, some texts in other books (like "Signs") are easier to read than the Phenomenology of perception, but th'yre generally focused on a specific subject.
>>
Er.. what are you having trouble with? It's pretty simple to be honest and I'm having trouble seeing how his examples could be considered opaque.
>>
To be fair, he is the most dense of the phenomenologists.

Just get a laptop. If you're having a hard time staying concentrated turn on airplane mode and use a word processor that doesn't have a dictionary, thesaurus, or spell check and can full screen just the composition area.

I really think you'd be better off with a computer, but if you really want one just get it.

The Shakespeare Folio ones are worth it simply because you don't get handmade things very often anymore. It is good to however indirectly support crafts like that. I'm not impressed by a lot of their editions but some are very nice.

Learnt about Machiavelli back when I was 12 reading a history book. Apparently he was friends with leonardo da vinci. Napoleon named the prince as his favourite book. Later went to the library to find the book hidden in the brittanica world texts series. Ditched it after five pages because I thought it was cruel and scandalous. Off-topic, Galileo's Two World Systems was amazing.

So guys, I had an a dream like five minutes ago that detailed an incredible universe for a story to be in, but I need help developing an actual plot for it.
The rules for the Universe revolve around Fate, Time Travel, and Outcomes. Fate, by the time it reaches the final outcome, has to equal a certain value. Say the Outcome is whether a child is executed or found innocent, every moment leading up to the trial and the final gavel swing has to add up to a Fate value of 30 or something.
So, in the very first run, say one of the Events that leads to the Outcome is a friend getting shot. You can't simply move your friend out of the way of the bullet, because then the Fate Value at the end wouldn't equal 30, meaning an event equivalent in trauma to getting shot will occur to that character within an hour of the original event.
So, in order to prevent your buddy from getting shot, you have to force someone else to get shot. And it can't just be anyone, it has to be someone who, if they were to be shot, would have an equal impact on the end outcome.
If a replacement event does not equal the original events value, a mitigated event will occur to the original victim (instead of getting shot in the heart they only get shot in the liver)
And of course, every Outcome has a a or b variable, sometimes split among the same event. By the time of the Outcome, the final decision is made based on which outcome has more value, the severity of which is modified based on the ratio.
Are there any changes or specifications that should be made to those rules? And does anyone have any ideas for a plot, including how the time travel is triggered and why the main character can use it?
Much appreciated. (Pic not related)

interesting because I had a dream last night that I went to a play with a girl that I like from work but that I myself was also dressed like a girl with a cute bodycon dress and that we were wearing matching sets up underwear.

Then when I woke up I had a wet spot on my sheets.
>>
>>9093998
This is really interesting. Quantifying something like fate is not something I've heard before. If I understood your concept, it means that for an action to manifest into reality, it has to pass a certain threshold of "fate units" which is determined by the agent and environment. So it is possible to "control fate" if you control these "units". I guess this will be a great setting for a 50s noir-style adventure (dieselpunk?)
>>
I like the idea of noir, it could work up to maybe, exposing a crime ring? But I still have no clue how to make the time travel happen. I'm trying to avoid main character death just bc that's been done before

I just finished GR, which I enjoyed immoderately. However I have some questions (of which I already anticipate many won't/don't have definite answers) about characters, their fate(s), plot points, etc.

What actually was the Khirgiz Light? Some sort of nebulous magical/fatidic oracle in the middle of the plains?

When does the launch of the 00000 actually take place? The theatre that it ostensibly hits is described temporally in the 70s near the end of the book?

Why did Blicero/Weissman put Gottfried in/on the 00000. Was that the point of the digression on the Oven in Beyond the Zero? In his, Katje's, and Gottfried's Hansel and Gretel sexual role playing the rocket was the analog of the oven?

Any Anons have any other insights to share that may have been missed on a first read?

Post your short story

That's literally the only way to help you

The reason you're getting rejected if because your writing is not good
>>
The same thing happened to me several years ago. Normally if a journal doesn't want to publish a story, the journal will send a rejection letter. However, the journal did not send one because your story was never received. Have you felt, as of late, that someone or something-- not owing to a higher power-- was watching you? Have you noticed that your possessions have been moved ever so slightly, so as to be hardly noticeable, and yet you still notice the changing positions? It's thre work of the literary pixies. These pompous fiends have been treasurers of literature, and they've done good work for the most part, but recently they've gone mad trying to preserve old literary eras by shutting down anything they deem unworthy of publication. I haven't had the opportunity to have more than a brief conversation with one of them, during which the little man informed me that my writing was crude and improper, and did not deserve to become widespread and mistaken for art.

Don't mind them. There's a simple solution: pixies abhor bug collectors, especially of the beetle variety. Keep a few preserved beetles on your writing desk, and they won't try to read what it is you've written.
