We believe in a cognitive intelligence quotient, and some of us believe in an emotional intelligence quotient. Do believe in a moral intelligence quotient? All books should hopefully train one of these (assuming that cognitive and emotional can be trained.) Which books train moral intelligence to the greatest degree?

Usually highly intelligent individuals have a certain disdain for morality.
>>
>>9963026
If you compare logic and morality, there is a definite difference in actions people do. Think tipping wait staff. The logical guest tips according to the service provided so that they will hopefully improve their service over time. The moral guest tips generously even if he wasn't attended as much as he wanted because he can put himself in the waiter's shoes. I personally believe you can be both morally and cognitively intelligent, but that is probably pretty rare.
>>
>>9962964
thats why i cinfrimed that there is in fact an intelligence (capacity) that evades traditional logic, call it emotional intelligence, spirtual intelligence, moral intelligence whatever, its a way of measuring virtue, not numerically of course, circumstantially. That is why Intelligent does not equal wise. Wisdom is the practice of virtues. Logic is the practice of reasoning. But to be fair virtuosity is embedded with reasoning as well. but still both capacity and practice are different.

In the book of the bible, I've come to understand that to Jesus, sadness is a meme. He only wept because people believed there was something to weep about and may it was damage control emotionally, which is ironic. He knew obviously there is nothing he cant redeem or heal, even death itself. Since life is planned and God arbitrarily only allows what he wants to happen because he thinks it has a fruitful outcome, one can only reason then there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in this life to get sad about. How can you refute that.

God loves all and would like all to love back. It's the entire reason for creation in the first place, the perpetuation of love. He hates sin because it is the opposite of love, and only by Jesus' sacrifice and God's grace are we sinners with faith be forgiven.
But of course God can be sad about those who have no faith, for they are lost to Him. Jesus cries over Jerusalem as the people turn away from God.
Jesus also wept for Lazarus, not out of social awkwardness lol, but because He was upset that His friends were upset.
Also Matt 26:38 "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death", of course feels sadness at the Father's plan but he carries it out anyway: "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." (Matt 26:39)

So for us, like Jesus, there are reasons to be upset too. Lost souls, empathy, and that's God's "fruitful outcome" may bring us extreme negative outcomes in this life.
>>
>>9963005
>only by Jesus' sacrifice and God's grace are we sinners with faith be forgiven.
but that is theoretically incorrect. God chose to die on the cross but it was not in fact mandatory, his omnipotence cannot be reduced to an action lol he clearly states in the bible he can make humans out of stones and that reality is irrelevant if he does not consider it. As for sadness, which was my original concern. Jesus was never actually sad, he just mimicked a reaction that properly coincides with what the people were feeling but there was nothing to literally be sad about for him because he was just about to wake him up. It's a very strange occurrence, that i don't even think can be properly explained. As for sorrow before death. Very strange occurrence. I know he was taking upon the sin of the world, and when he said that his humanity was on display. It was more of a hardware deficiency than actual display of interior. He says to have taken the sins of the world upon himself, and perhaps the worlds sadness as well. To me, attributing it to frustration and fear may be more realistic. Fear because it would hurt his flesh (which for some reason he wanted to endure), and frustration because he can't change minds. He still was divine, and his true nature comes out after the resurrection, when he basically tells them, hey numb nuts why the long face and shock, i fuckin told you a thousand times IM GOD. It's almost like a poignant play, but in reality there truly never was no threat. And that God let us live life now as it, not under his immediate presence, to show us a life of sin is worse. But the spirit is truly, solely, where the danger actually is, no one can save themselves from physical pain, thats a God's power and choice, but someones is in complete control in saving their spirit and invigorating it by saying yes to Jesus, this is the presented theory from life. Signs of sadness is in fact not reasonable but a sign of a deficiency.

There's this passage from Infinite Jest I'm trying to remember. Specifically, there's a word or phrase in Spanish which refers to the inescapable condition of addiction. Does anyone know what page this is on or what the phrase in Spanish is?

also, general Infinite Jest discussion
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'm tight about this because I just finished the book for the first time a few days ago and don't have my copy on me. I vaguely recall what you're referring to but the only thing that's coming to mind is the passage about anhedonia, which I'm assuming isn't what you're talking about since that's not Spanish and doesn't specifically refer to addiction.

I'll try to find it when I go home later. Anyway, general discussion: I was 400 pages in when I made peace with the fact that I'll have to (and will) read the book a second time, which I think I'll enjoy more than reading it the first time. I missed everything having to do with how the actual plot ties together, but still enjoyed it. How many times have you read it, OP? Tell me your story.
>>
I think you're talking about tecato gusano, which is latin. Pg 200, according to the glossary.

Is the KJV really as amazing (stylistically speaking) as people say it is? I've heard people (hi Bloom) say that it's the next best thing to Shakespeare, but are they just saying that because of its spiritual/cultural value? Is the prose truly god tier, no pun intended?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Yes to all of the above.
>>
It's not as if every single verse was stressed over as much as every single line of Shakespeare. But overall, you'll find more lines of great/influential prose in the KJV than almost anywhere else.

That said, it's really a matter of what you consider to be good. 17th century writing is generally overrated because it was when contemporary English was being solidified, so writers could be a little bit more creative since the standards weren't set yet.
>>
>>9962829
>17th century writing is generally overrated
It's the apex of English writing though, how can it be overrated?
Shakespeare, Milton, Marlowe, Spenser, Burton, Browne, Ben Johnson, Dryden, KJV translation, Chapman's homer translations, the metaphysical poets
Just to name the absolute cream of the crop.

Are there any anthologies (i.e. collection of short works that share a common theme/criterion) you would recommend?

I'll start with two:

Donald Keene: Mordern Japanese Literature
Even though it can no longer be regarded as truly "modern", it features works by
Soseki, Akutagawa, Ogai, Kawabata, Dazai, Tanizaki, Izumi Kyoka, Nagai Kafu, Shiga Naoya, Kunikida Doppo and others.
It also has some poetry and the final act of "the Thieves" by Kawatake Mokuami.

Library of America: Reporting Vietnam
It is absolutely fascinating to see how far journalistic standards have fallen since the late 60s/early 70s.
The articles collected chronologically in two volumes offer an amazing opportunity to re-imagine those times long since gone.
I recommend putting on some music from that era as background noise for full immersion.

What is this garbage? It reads like a diary. Learn how to employ the comma, you mongoloid.
>>

1. Don't use contractions (like 'don't') in formal writing.
2. line 1, 'reading and writing ... are', not 'is'.
3. Why is 'important' quoted?
4. line 1, 'generally' is unneeded.
5. 'mind altering' should be hyphenated.
6. line 3, 'ironic' means what exactly?
7. line 3, you've used 'compel' twice now
8. line 3, the remaining part of the sentence after 'and consume' makes no sense at all.
9. line 4, you've ended 'any reason not to' on a preposition. Although this kind of thing is 'ok' nowadays, in my mind it isn't. This is your choice.
10. line 5, 'literary' is unneeded, as you've mentioned 'reading' and 'works' and this obviously implies 'literary'; besides this is sounding too pretentious.
11. 'transposes ... ideas into the structure of your brain itself'. This is too pretentious and verbose.
12. line 7, 'however 'important' this is...' So you're going to leave perhaps the most interesting sentence in the entire thing unanswered?

13. second paragraph, line 1, change 'then if' to 'and if'.
14. same line, remove 'truly'.
15. 'poetic feeling'? Pretentious: explain or remove.
16. 'beyond words'? Cliché: you're explaining it now.
17. 'effect on when read'. Makes no sense: remove 'on'?
18. 'which comes to mind'. Unneeded, remove.
19. line 3, 'whose'. Don't use 'who' with inanimate objects, Siddhartha is a book: use 'the ending of which'.
20. same line, 'one of the ... synergy'. Should be plural.
21. Do you want to expand on WHY Siddhartha was good? Or just skip over it entirely like here?
22. line 4, 'sub conscious' is one word.
23. line 5, 'utilitarian'. Pretentious: explain or remove.
24. line 6, you're missing 'to' from before 'read'.

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers’ hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
“I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay.”
