In the Genealogy of Morals, Essay One

Nietzsche posits that the Jews were the first to successfully "invert" morality, the first to say that

>only those who suffer are good
>only the powerless, the lowly, the deprived, the sick, the ugly are pious
>the rich, the cruel are evil, and are eternally wicked and eternally damned

This gave them moral power over their oppressors

I think anyone who believes in a Jewish conspiracy would really love to hear this, considering the current atmosphere of public discussion

Yeah and Thus Spake Zarathustra was assigned reading for Nazis, nothing new here.

Read Kierkegaard, it's a little more complex.
>>
>>9137373

Right, yet Nietzsche would have found the Nazis deplorable.

Nietzsche himself says that he would not consider anyone an expert on any of his texts until they had read all of his texts. The Nazis didn't understand his works, they picked and chose passages which they could contort as justification.

>Nothing new here
>Kierkegaard is a little more complex

What the fuck are you trying to say? Please try and contribute something of value with your posts, or at least something interesting

>Nietzsche himself says that he would not consider anyone an expert on any of his texts until they had read all of his texts.
And I bet you still haven't read everything, considering you probably don't even speak German. But keep thinking you're an expert.

can i put lines from songs in my novel? I want one of my characters to say something to another character that's taken from a deathcab for cutie song.

Typically no, unless it has a wider relevance to the story itself. Death Cab For Cutie are quite awful so I don't see them being used outside of terrible college kid novellas and pandering young adult fiction
>>
>>9137307
wtf. only 30 somethings listen to them. the part I wanted to add was "that love is watching someone die"
>>
30-somethings that are desperately trying to reclaim their college years where the biggest problem was a girl not fucking them.
What Sarah Said isn't that insightful, at least I think. "Who's Going To Watch You Die" works well as a refrain but lyrically the song isn't great. I'd avoid it.

Needs, only recently started reading.

I'm pretty motivated about it and I'm generally feeling good, but I can't help but feel that I miss something whenever I read. For example, I read some of Eliot's poetry the other day and I missed a lot of the symbolism. I'm currently reading the sound and the Fury, and not only am I having a hard time understanding it, but even when I do understand it, I can't clearly say what symbols Faulkner is using.

So some advice on how to be a more skilled reader, and how to properly understand the great books would be very highly appreciated.

I am someone in a very similar situation as you; I recently realized that I have burnt through almost all regular forms of entertainment and normal art just seems so repetitive that it's plain annoying at this point; I am essentially bored with movies, tv shows, games and porn; Novelty can sometimes cause and a kind of bland curiosity but it can't hold my interest long anymore.
I am not sure if I truly enjoy books but it’s the only source of new insights and I seem to need new insights to stay alive or I fear that I might simply stagnate until I become obsolete and die.
So, what do we do? Do we burn through literature and philosophy until it becomes boring as well? Do we reach the apex of philosophical understanding just to realize that "True" understanding of the universe is merely the state death?
I don't know but I propose this; we don't seek intellectual enlightenment, we do not seek to embody god on earth; instead we seek to live an earthly existence to its fullest.
That more often than not means a traditional existence; A simple family, a decent partner to bring that much need feminine energy into your life which further allows you find purpose in work even if there is no novelty or sense of intellectual fulfilment. So, basically, what I am saying is that we should not fetishize knowledge because the world of intellectuals is a sterile wasteland. Maybe we should seek fulfilment in simple earthly things so we won’t need knowledge to justify our existence. Then again, maybe I am wrong about all of this and maybe redemption lies in knowledge. I don't know.

Refute this for me:
At some point in history there was the First philosopher (many would consider Socrates, but who the fuck really knows). This guy couldn't have been educated in the field of philosophy because he was the first, though he was likely well-versed in arts, crafts, politics, rhetoric etc. So he did what he could and formulated some principals. Then he took a student (Plato??), who was the Second philosopher. This guy learned what he could from the First, but, surely, it was not a philosophical sort of education, because the First himself was ignorant in philosophy. Then came the Third, Fourth, Hundredth, and so on. Yet, they all studied from an ever-increasing body of works, but those works came from the men who previously studied from philosophically ignorant men, so their philosophical knowledge was doomed to be rooted in methodical ignorance. Because, unlike, for example, science, objective (as far as the field of science is concerned), detached from an individual knowledge is not present in philosophy, and cannot be compounded upon each other, a man who reads any one work of philosophy is equal in foundational understanding of philosophy to the man who read them all, and both are equal to the Second philosopher (if we assume unbroken chain of passed knowledge, which is flimsy but irrelevant).

tl;dr Philosophy is a flawled methodology, it teaches nothing but brain clutter, and should be regarded on a purely personal level, like poetry. We should stop wasting time on meme philosophers and concentrate on arts, literature, science, and all-around polymathy

This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.

What are your thoughts on the Ship of Theseus?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus

Does this apply to computers?

Are two computers with the exact same parts list fungible?

If we were in a future where transhumanism brought about a population consisting primarily of androids, would two androids with equivalent parts lists be considered the same?

If the chemical processes in your brain could be abstracted and represented as data that could be transmitted digitally, and the glial and neuronal cells in your brain could be represented and simulated by a machine, could such a machine replicate a consciousness if it was provided a snapshot of a real brain?

Are two simulated versions of the same mind equivalent?

Do any authors explore this?

Your neurons and cells are entirely replaced every seven years.
>>
>>9135812
Do you complain about your McDonald's fries tasting the same, but having a slightly different molecular composition from those when you ordered?

Do you complain about your one beer out of a six pack tasting any different than the other five, even though the alcoholic, mineral and sugar content are most likely minutely different?

Does the exact atomic composition and position need to be exactly the same to satisfy your elemental reductionism, so you feel good sentimentally?

Is any of this anything other than just making yourself feel good about not losing something that has unique intrinsic value, and whether you can replace that value through replication?

Maybe the real value arises from the fact that it is a unique item, and its replication is what devalues it.
>>
Mathematical models of human neurons already exist. The field of Machine Learning deals heavily with this.

>>9135859
If you can replicate something exactly, can you use it to replace the original? And if so, is it still the same thing?

I remember reading something about artists in China that attempt to replicate the exact same brush strokes that painters such as Picasso may have taken on a canvas.

If somehow, someone was able to replicate Starry Night using the exact same canvas, oil paint, brush strokes, and somehow managed to age it all in some fashion, is it equivalent to the one hanging in the Museum of Modern Art in New York?

Flaubert said it would be better to know a few books very well than to have read a lot of books, but have little knowledge or recollection of them

Again with this recollection meme. Literature is not textbooks to be recalled accurately and completely. One reads for the way literature transforms oneself, not for the information or "facts" therein. My favourite analogy for this is climbing a mountain or walking on a beach or seeing any other interesting, beautiful place: you should enjoy the way this place makes you feel, not try to remember exactly where each landmark or natural feature is placed and what it looked like. If you do have that kind of memory good for you, but don't lose sight of the former for the sake of the latter.
