If a work like this had been made by anyone other than Faulkner nobody would have wanted to publish it and people would assume it had been written by a middle schooler.

And indeed, the disjointed, clumsy approach taken here appears to be experimentation for experimentation's sake more than an attempt to write a coherent work; alliteration and stream of consciousness is great, but Faulkner took the idea and attempted to apply it in such a way that re-reading pages is frequent, if only to decipher the (usually boring) plot, which disappears over and over as the story jumps from scene to scene in a seemingly random order.

And it has become the bane of those forced to read it because "it's a classic." Sadly it has none of the entertaining quality shared by a work like Slaughterhouse-Five or The Hobbit, also classics and actually readable.

Folio publishes it in 14 colors, the way Faulkner envisioned it to help brainlets like you. Now fuck off back to /r/books.

Quick question about narration and dialogue.

If I'm writing a story in 1st person, should my characters dialogue and narration sound exactly the same?

So for example if my character has a dialect where he pronounces words which end in '-ing' as '-in' (bouncin', instead of bouncing) should he have the same dialect in narration?

>>
Dropping your g's doesnt count as a dialect. Also don't write in dialect.
>>
>>9138293
yes
>>
>>9138348
The -g drop is the hallmark of a shitty writer.

>Hmm...how do I make my dialogue sound real?
>I know! I'll just delete a bunch of g's! That should show how earthy my protagonist is!

Go, wiser thou! and, in thy scale of sense
Weigh thy opinion against Providence;
Call imperfection what thou fanciest such,
Say, here he gives too little, there too much:
Destroy all creatures for thy sport or gust,
Yet cry, if man's unhappy, God's unjust;
If man alone engross not Heav'n's high care,
Alone made perfect here, immortal there:
Snatch from his hand the balance and the rod,
Rejudge his justice, be the God of God.
In pride, in reas'ning pride, our error lies;
All quit their sphere, and rush into the skies.
Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes,
Men would be angels, angels would be gods.
Aspiring to be gods, if angels fell,
Aspiring to be angels, men rebel:
And who but wishes to invert the laws
Of order, sins against th' Eternal Cause.

Thats cool and all buddy, but I paid you 5 bucks to read my fortune, so, er, can you do it or not?
>>
>>9138647

Behold! Anon seeks sight for his fortune,
A fedora-wearing creep on 4chan.
I know nothing of your fate or future,
No balm for past, or healing set suture.
I know of this, for single fact arrive:
You paid poorly, and I now have your five.

Okay, superlegit. I will write iambic pentameter pieces on certain comments left on this page. I encourage others to do likewise. I am going to bed, but in the morning, if this thread is still alive, I will be one busy man.

Go forth!

How do you feel about incestuous themes in books or other art forms ? Are they degenerate or something worth exploring ?

hard to do, but has powerful aesthetic merit

I personally think it's degenerate if an older man and younger woman is involved while it's a lot more nuanced and complex where a older woman and younger man is involved.

>And then: The whooping of klaxons. Red lights strobe. Three airspeeders swoop down from the traffic lanes above—Imperial police. Red-and- black helmets. The glow of their lights reflected back in their helmets.

>There comes no warning. No demand to stand down.

>The laser cannons at the fore of each airspeeder open fire. Red bolts sear the air. The crowd is cut apart. Bodies dropped and stitched with fire.

>But still, those gathered are not cowed. They are no longer a crowd. Now they are a mob. They start picking up hunks of the Palpatine statue and lobbing them up at the airspeeders. One of the speeders swings to the side to avoid an incoming chunk of stone—and it bumps another speeder, interrupting its fire. Coruscanti citizens climb up the stone spire behind both speeders—a spire on which are written the Imperial values of order, control, and the rule of law—and begin jumping onto the police cruisers. One helmeted cop is flung from his vehicle. The other crawls out onto the hood of his speeder, opening fire with a pair of blasters—just as a hunk of stone cracks him in the helmet, knocking him to the ground.

>The other two airspeeders lift higher and keep firing.

>Screams and fire and smoke.

>Two of those gathered—a father and son, Rorak and Jak—quick-duck behind the collapsed statue. The sounds of the battle unfolding right here in Monument Plaza don’t end. In the distance, the sound of more fighting, a plume of flames, flashes of blaster fire. A billboard high up in the sky among the traffic lanes suddenly goes to static.

>The boy is young, only twelve standard years, not old enough to fight. Not yet. He looks to his father with pleading eyes. Over the din he yells: “But the battle station was destroyed, Dad! The battle is over!” They just watched it only an hour before. The supposed end of the Empire. The start of something better.

How did he get away with writing like this? How did he get a three book, an important three book, deal? Apparently he boasts about finishing this book in 45 days, as if that's something to be proud of.

>What's your philosophy on it?

a) they have a corruptive influence
b) given the amount of suffering in the world that directly depends on economic matters, every form of blatant luxury (everything that goes beyond a comfortable life) should be seen as immoral

>How much do you need and want?
I earn 2100 euros/month and a 30000 euros account for eventual medical bills. I've always lived with about 500 euros every month (I pay only 300 euros in rent, wich is common if you're European), and give the rest away to a few local charities and a few international ones.

>What are you willing to sacrifice etc
Absolutely nothing, everything I care about that can be bought (books and music scores) can be accessed for free through libraries, and my social life (wich I'll have to admit, is pretty lacking) doesn't imply any sort of expense.
I genuinely don't care about money and material possessions, I'm 100% content with a few books, a few good friends, a piano and a fulfillong job that I can ethically exploit.

Just bought this today, /lit/.

What am I in for, is 'virtue' dead? As I understand it, he basically admits that Nietzsche more or less destroyed Enlightenment morality and virtue ethics, but hearkens back to Aristotle in their defence.

It was a good effort from MacIntyre, but his argument is too heavily dependent upon Aristotle. A bit dogmatic.

Do you think I should read the illiad and the odyssey before reading ancient greek philosophy?

If so, why?

I read Edith Hamilton's mythology book, and pic related, after seeing an infographic flowchart about starting with the greeks.

When I try to read the illiad, I find it very difficult to concentrate on it. For those of you who have read "thinking fast and slow", trying to read Homer is very much a "system 2" activity. I could force myself to read it if necessary, but perhaps I'm wasting my time by not going directly to Plato and Aristotle (which was always the goal)

You don't have to read them, just understand the basic plot elements and the themes and you will get most of the references thrown at you.
>>
>>9136858

thank you
>>
>>9136858
This guy is right. On the other hand, if you can't cope with Homer how do you hope to deal with Plato& the gang? Or maybe it's the poetry you have a problem with and not the complexity of the ideas within? Anyway, give it try but you're really missing out if you skip Homer because it's beautiful.
