Anyone ever read a movie novel that ended up being better than the movie itself?

>pic very much related. Almost done with Retribution by John Shirley. Didn't realize until later that almost all 6 Resident Evil films have a film novelizations. Thought I'd give them a go and there actually pretty good. Extinction has been the best so far.

Kids are so annoying. I specially look down on those insufferable american kids, who communicate entirely through shrill TV cartoon pop culture references. That's how you can tell if the parents really fucked up.

Heinrich definitely is, I don't remember the other kid(s)

There are no books that can give me the same amount of emotion and memory I had expierenced while reading In Search of Lost Time.

Marcel Proust is the greatest writer.

If you don't agree then you've probably only read Swann's Way and nothing further. Only true patricians can get through In Search of Lost Time

I'm about halfway into Within a Budding Grove. It's really really really good. That's not to say Joyce isn't great, too. Not sure why we have to play partisans for one or the other. Hoping to finish the whole thing in a few months.

>>9139352
A lot of people on this board who like Joyce underestimate Proust and don't get him as much. In Search of Lost Time is much more "mature", for lack of a better word. They're both good, but Joyce admitted himself that he could was not as great as daddy Marcel.

Is Romance of the Three Kingdoms worth a read? Can anyone recommend a version?

Hello /lit/. I was wondering if any of you have read this book before, or anything similar and would care to discuss it.

I'd like to find out about the critical reception of his thesis. Is it widely regarded as bullshit?

I'd also like to know whether you personally see any merit to his ideas. Going into the book I thought it would be a load of hogwash, but the examples provide strong support to his theory.

After reading this it has kind of sent me down a psychedelic history rabbit hole. Having used a number myself I find myself agreeing with him. Psychedelic plant use is an integral part of the human experience which in the past has been used as a powerful tool for shaping society and improving the life of the people who live within it.

HOWEVER: I do recognise that most authors writing about psychedelics are going to be pretty biased in their favour, perhaps reading in causation to history where there is only correlation. If anyone could provide me with history books not exclusively about psychedelics, but which perhaps indicate or mention their use amongst cultures from the past.

Cheers in advance

Problems with Terry McK:
He misled his audiences about his psilo usage when at the peak of his fame. He had backed of big doses due to nihilistic trips. If people had known this he would have faced tough questions and lost out on the guru lifestyle.

Eschaton 22/12/2012 - this should be obvious.

As I see there are three distinct things people often perceive as "intelligence".

A simply reasonably elaborated opinion that supports your prejudices;

Some kind of culture that is distant from the person's reality, what makes them think it's hard. Be it the dominating class erudition or ideologies relegated to the underground for a variety of reasons;

And what I think is actual intelligence. A elevated ability to solve problems of any kind. Note the "any kind" here. It's not the same as knowhow.(Of course you could say any ability to solve problems must be learned some how, well, there are people that agree and that disagree. I'm somehow in between both, feel free to debate.)

The purpose of the thread of this thread is for us to discuss in which, if any, category we, as individuals - not board, fit better. I think that the second perception will be the one to show up more here, since it's a literature board.

About OP:

I personally had a vast experience with all three. Very early in my life noticed I better fit the third one - sorry if it seems arrogant, to put objectively, I'm very intelligent. Since then I developed a disdain for the other two, I feel bad when I think someone complimented me for one of the first two. I do try very hard to appear intelligent but only by the means of a friendly, simple yet well structured explanation of a "hard" subject to someone with no background in the area.

I also usually think less of the people in the third type of intelligence that do not behave as me.

Some stuff that could lead to a interesting discussion:
Your personal learning techniques;
Your personal exposition techniques.

In my case of learning there are five main techniques I can remember right now:

"Linked lists": I collect up to ~5 closely related ideas and store them in my working memory(very short term) - or in other words, keep them in my mind at the same time - preserving they relations. Then I represent this block of ideas as a single idea and repeat the process by connecting it with ~5 more ideas.

"Photographic memory (I hate this term and this item doesn't contribute much to the thread)": No I don't think I'm capable of storing literally every detail of a picture in my brain but the effect is similar. I don't know exactly how but sometimes I'm able to store things for later reading.
I do this thing in which I "force" my mind and I'm able to remember entire pages. This was very useful for the subjects I didn't like in school(and there were quite a lot of them).

Association: This is simple, think about someone, somewhere or something and make an association with whatever you are studying.

Explanation: Imagine a dialog with someone in which you explain what you want to learn in a very succinct yet complete way.

Explicit cognitive steps: I consciously repeat what, I suspect, are the steps of cognition. Analysis, Synthesis, Generalization and Judgment.

I haven't thought that much about the exposition techniques. But it probably boils down to metaphors and analysis > generalization > synthesis.

To the grammar nazis: A considerable part of grammar rules are useless and are the remnant of a language no longer in use. I didn't read my post after writing it. Fuck you, cunt. Your life is pathetic and I hope you die, fucking cisscum.

This board would be a lot better if all the awfully insecure retards stopped obsessing over intelligence and creating shitty pointless threads filled with autistic pasta. Have a nice report and fuck off back to /r9k/.
>>
>>9138912
It's not about intelligence. It's about learning techniques and how people perceive intelligence. It's very useful and very related to a literature board.

Being that mad about anyone that brings up intelligence and learning may make people think you are insecure.

The Prologue of Bloom's "The Anxiety of Influence" is a short poem titled "It Was A Great Marvel That They Were In The Father Without Knowing Him".

It sounds very biblical, but when I google it the results only throw a short story by David Foster Wallace.

Is the title a quotation from the Bible, or an invention of Bloom?

>>
It's Bloom's. Have you read his latest? His best since Agon. That men in their 80's like Bloom and Ashbery remain at the forefront of their occupations with such vitality is THE artistic scandal of our times. The volume I refer to is The Daemon Knows--
>>

Well Ashbery is amazing...gotta say from what I've read of his modern stuff (post-2000) I didn't really care for it. And I'm not someone who just idealizes earlier writings no matter what
