I want to get into Arthurian literature. I want to become familiar with all the main elements of the legends.

What are the core influential versions of Arthurian stories?

What are the best or essential anthologies?

I, too, am interested in any responses.

All I know is that Le Morte D'Arthur is important, but I don't know how canonical it is overall.

I enjoyed Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" some years ago. If you're not a /pol/tard or don't agree with the /b/ tier 'all women are good for is [insert sexual degradation]' meme, I think it's a worthwhile modern take.

I'll copy-paste the book list from my Arthurian Literature class I'm coincidentally taking this semester:
>The Romance of Arthur: An Anthology of Medieval Texts in Translation, 3rd edition. Norris J. Lacy and James J. Wilhelm (London & New York: Routledge, 2013).
>The Middle English Breton Lays, ed. Anne Laskaya and Eve Salisbury (Kalamazoo: TEAMS, 2001).
>Sir Thomas Malory, Le Morte Darthur: The Winchester Manuscript, ed. Helen Cooper (Oxford & New York: Oxford UP, 1998).
>Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. Ed. M. Thomas Inge (Oxford & New York: Oxford UP, 2008).

Romance of Arthur will give you a solid grounding in the basic legends and characters. Breton Lays contain some slightly more obscure myths and help to grasp the culture as a whole (they're also really fun to read, being written in Middle English). Le Morte Darthur is pretty crucial in much the same way as the Romance, and we haven't gotten to Twain in the class yet but I assume it's there for the memes.

Obviously this is all going to be introductory stuff for the most part (it's an undergraduate class), but it should give you a basis for further study. The Romance of Arthur, especially, contains a lot of citations and references that can lead you interesting places.

These are my ideological inspirations:
- Rawls for his theory of justice.
- Spinoza for his view of God
- Marx and Peter Turchin on their views of inequality
- David Sloan Wilson for his theory on religion and for group selection
- Trotsky for his view on the new human that comes out of melting pots, disagree with eugenics however
- Jablonka for her contribution to genetics, epigenetics and learning
- Stuart Kauffman for his vision of a new Axial age and also his view on God
- Karen Armstrong for her contribution on religion

as of right now:

yve-alain bois for his formalist approach to the arts
georges didi-huberman for breaking art history
marx for his notions of work/labour and essence
eisenstein for proposing a theory of cinema way more interesting than bazin's one
kant for making art history a mess
heinrich wolfflin for making me comprehend impressionism, in a book that doesn't even talk about impressionism, better than all essays ive read about the style

i don't know about the rest.

So Nietzsche began his seminal work bitching about no gf and calling other philosophers beta males?

"SUPPOSING that Truth is a woman—what then? Is there not ground for suspecting that all philosophers, in so far as they have been dogmatists, have failed to understand women—that the terrible seriousness and clumsy importunity with which they have usually paid their addresses to Truth, have been unskilled and unseemly methods for winning a woman? Certainly she has never allowed herself to be won; and at present every kind of dogma stands with sad and discouraged mien—IF, indeed, it stands at all!"

Has anyone ever done an analysis of the relation between postmodernism and the meta-ironic nature of memes so prevalent in internet culture? I'm interesting in learning more about this topic.

Have you ever done an analysis of the relation between your phobia of the authoritarian right and certain extremely effective propaganda campaigns performed between 1940 and 1990 by the United States and the Soviet Union? I'm interested in learning more about this topic.

Why is it that native speakers of English are so terrible at writing and speaking it?
People from all around the world use this website and the whole world wide web to communicate. Whenever I see someone confusing
>they're
>their
>there
It is usually a native speaker of English. There are so many things these guys do that piss me off.
>would of
>could of
>phenomena for phenomenon
>mixing up <ei> and <ie> within a word
>I ate some taco's
>He eat's tacos
Can you, as reasonable literate people, tell me why that is?

>>
fuck off autismo

i can always tell when a yuropoor or spic is posting because they are really spergy about following certain rules of grammar but cant construct a well-flowing sentence to save their life.

btw nobody says i ate 'some' tacos. We just eat tacos. We don't care to specify an amount unless its for the sake of exactitude or hyperbole
>>
>>9171135

Native speakers are rarely taught grammar, we unconsciously learn it for the most part.

As an example I had absolutely no idea until a few weeks ago that the usage of "a" or "an" depends on whether the following word begins with a vowel or a consonant. I had instinctively known a rule without ever having been taught it.

I've been on the front lines in the past memeing about plotfags, but reading pic related has convinced me that prose alone isn't enough. It can't bear the weight of insipid characters and a plot that has lapsed into a vegetative state.

It must be ever so lovely to be able to read and process all of those words with ease. Just skim over the pages. Reading must be a great luxury for those of you that have this gift.

I've only read Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet.

I need to read more of Shakespeare, so as not to come off as a total fuck when I start my English major next month.

I've got Troilus and Cressida, Henry VI, and The Taming of the Shrew on the list. After these, which of his works should be next?

No one's gonna care that you... before... but anyway...

Henry IV and Henry V are more essential than Henry VI.

Also: Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, The Tempest, Richard III, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Very roughly in order of importance.

Sup /lit/, I've recently been getting my girlfriend into reading and gave her siddhartha, which she didn't enjoy. Now she is reading game of thrones, and got hooked. She asked for more recommendations, said she enjoyed Jodi Piccold and Dan Brown - the commercial options most of us read at some point or other. Obviously, she isn't patrician, but what other easy reads would you suggest for her to read? She wants to gradually build up to harder reads.

Maupin's Tales of the city, again. I don't understand why this isn't rec'd all the time. It's a perfect mix - very easy to read, several volumes, fun, romance, sex, crime, 1980's, it's a bit like watching some series but still genuine literature.
