How do you read books in other languages without succumbing to the urge to look up every single word you don't know?

why would that be a bad thing? that's how you learn

You SHOULD look up every word you don't know.

Personal rare advice my dad told me: Look it up in [Studied Language] → English, and English → [Studied Language]. If you're not using 2 dictionaries, you're not doing it right.

I'm tremendously lazy.

Be completely honest now. Is there anyone on /lit/ whose output (pieces of writing or criticism) you have considered to be of the highest quality?

Don’t say:

>oh, there is only shit here, nobody has ever done anything good, etc, etc.

(However says this is either being insincere, or has never paid much attention to the critic threads, or only lurks here once in a while)

Or

>that time Pynchon posted in here

(There was no prove that Pynchon never posted in here, and to be frank I myself don’t find Pynchon that much of a great writer. Extremely intelligent? Yes, no doubt. Someone with a real literary gift? Is debatable)

I am not talking only about writer who work with English. People who posted their translated material also count.

I am mostly interested in the opinion of people who have been hanging around here for quite a while, people who might have saved some good material from years ago.

pic is click-bait

I've seen some legitimately brilliant readers on here that offered better insights into books and philosophers than most of my professors.
When it comes to the actual fiction of people here I've never read much that couldn't fit in a post and I can't judge much based on that.

What do you think about the Rum Diaries?

Read it yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not as good as Thompson's other stuff, mostly for the empathical distance fiction puts between the reader and the protagonist, but it was a fine literary work, a sober reflection on existence and hope and other American stuff. Some fine prose too.

Plato is stupid.

Seriously.

And it's important that you all understand that Western society is based on the fallacy-ridden ramblings of an idiot. Read this, understand that he is not joking, and understand that Plato is well and truly fucked in the head.

Every single one of his works goes like this:

SOCRATES: "Hello, I will now prove this theory!"
STRAWMAN: "Surely you are wrong!"
SOCRATES: "Nonsense. Listen, Strawman: can we agree to the following wildly presumptive statement that is at the core of my argument?" {Insert wildly presumptive statement here— this time, it's "There is such a thing as Perfect Justice" and "There is such a thing as Perfect Beauty", among others.}
STRAWMAN: "Yes, of course, that is obvious."
SOCRATES: "Good! Now that we have conveniently skipped over all of the logically-necessary debate, because my off-the-wall crazy ideas surely wouldn't stand up to any real scrutiny, let me tell you an intolerably long hypothetical story."
{Insert intolerably long hypothetical story.}
STRAWMAN: "My God, Socrates! You have completely won me over! That is brilliant! Your woefully simplistic theories should become the basis for future Western civilization! That would be great!"
SOCRATES: "Ha ha! My simple rhetorical device has duped them all! I will now go celebrate by drinking hemlock and scoring a cameo in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure!"

The moral of the story is: Plato is stupid.

Hello /lit/. I'd like to draw a comic based on a sci-fi novel. What novel should i base my comic on? I'd like something that gets pretty philosopical and trippy. Not planning on publishing or something its just a hobby kinda thing.

Hunt down Andromeda comics. They feature stories based on a number of sci fi luminaries, like Jack Vance in this issue.

>I'd like something that gets pretty philosopical and trippy
Gotcha

I don't want to commit to writing and live the literary lifestyle because I don't want others to look down on me because i am poor. Personally i could probably get by. I don't need much. But socializing with others who only brag about how good their personal finances are would be unbareable. Being smarter than everybody is not much when the others think that if you are smart you make a lot of money.

Why are so many obscurantist philosophers materialist degenerates? You think they wold take the leap of faith or something but instead they embrace the cold dark heart of nihilism.
Is it because their entire philosophy is an elaborate ruse to make up for their own degenerate sexuality and to destroy the metaphysical foundation for the obvious spiritual dimensions of whiteness and masculinity, which they as Jews/ Homosexuals/ French Hate?

There's no reason to take the leap. That's the entire point of nihilism, nothing extant suggests otherwise, there is no evidence of anything greater than our limited selves.

The choice of mother earth

To devour physical bodies of which are made of consciousness

As pure as the consciousness of my own self

Is indeed fucking shit

Also, is indeed, when closely encountered, is the reap of your hologram of what u thought life is. One never existed, a new galaxy emerges.

A theoretical thought of a fear

Becomes practical

The big bang of your limitations imploding into its own mass, self-expanding to create a newborn galaxy, made of fields of gravity that feel as if the absolute truth is to expand your own self as big as the galaxy itself. Become the realization of infinity.

As every galaxy starts, darkness strides there for centuries, kings of new space, freezing in motion all of what is rudely gathered from the previous world.

You are no longer a limited expansion

You are longer an antichrist of boundries
