Probably my favorite book. I laughed at the boxed goods and the Hoppin' with flavor. Not sure why though. Is there anything behind why he chose those things? The chips in particular. And yes, I know JR got the boxes shipped to the apartment. I'm just wondering if there's anything more highbrow that I'm missing.

Also, Alsaka and Retreads. Fucking killed me.
>>
...what's funny about the boxes? I find the humor in JR has been massively oversold.

>"Open Shakespeare," I used to say to these admirers, "wherever you like, or wherever it may chance, you will see that you will never find ten consecutive lines which are comprehensible, unartificial, natural to the character that says them, and which produce an artistic impression." (This experiment may be made by any one. And either at random, or according to their own choice.) Shakespeare's admirers opened pages in Shakespeare's dramas, and without paying any attention to my criticisms as to why the selected ten lines did not satisfy the most elementary demands of esthetic and common sense, they were enchanted with the very thing which to me appeared absurd, incomprehensible, and inartistic

Was Tolstoy right? Can anyone here rise to the challenge and post ten consecutive lines that are comprehensible, unartificial, natural to the character and produce an artistic impression?

>>9968605
No. When the critic sets the goalposts, the argument is doomed. "Comprehensible" depends on the reader. "Unartifical" doesn't mean a fucking thing objectively. "Natural to the character" is an opinion by someone arguing with both the fucking author and the tradition of the time. "Produce an artistic impression" should make Tolstoy ashamed to even say out loud. This is subjective bullshit, more easily summed up as "My background, era, tastes, language and priorities are so wildly different from Shakespeare's that I can neither appreciate nor enjoy him."
>>
People don't speak in ten lines.
Or even three.
>>
I can post sublime lines that Tolstoy could never dream of matching, and it would be like arguing logic with someone religious: "No, this is artificial shit; the Duke wouldn't talk like that even though he does throughout the play," etc.

Now, my co-mates and brothers in exile,
Hath not old custom made this life more sweet
Than that of painted pomp? Are not these woods
More free from peril than the envious court?
Here feel we not the penalty of Adam,
The seasons' difference; as the icy fang
And churlish chiding of the winter's wind,
Which when it bites and blows upon my body,
Even till I shrink with cold, I smile and say
'This is no flattery; these are counsellors
That feelingly persuade me what I am.'
Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything.
I would not change it.

Yo lit, I heard there was some above-board place to read basically anything ever written, no torrents or anything. It basically is like a ROM and emulator site. Where is it? I really need to read some things and I simply don't have the money (in school). I think I even might have seen the place ages ago and not thought anything of it.

This is a request thread on ‘social’ books: books on how to behave around / with other people. Like etiquette books and the famous ‘how to win friends and influence people’.
I’m sharing a bit of myself so you can better understand my request:
Due to very little social contact, I’ve kind of become a shut-in for a long while now.
A jealous, bullying older brother who I had to share a roof with; A short-tempered father strained from work and my brother’s acts; Depression and not dealing well with my sexuality – All these things made me hide and become emotionally distant from people.
While trying to be a good person (which I genuinely was back in kindergarden), I've honestly turned very flawed, egotistic and often react in a exagerated/cross way to people without even realizing I've done it.
Sometimes it’s a very small trigger: like trying to hang up for the fourth time on an old friend and it’s getting awkward. Often times, I’m just too unwilling to invest in another person’s interest, and as I’m told by my BF, everything asked from me is like a huge chore.
Outside of me partly being a carbon copy of the narcissistic, ‘parasitic’ type of person, damaging to the relationship I’m in, this is honestly something of an obstacle as I hope to pursue an active career in a field where smooth interpersonal relations are required (pic related)
In conclusion, I’m a socially clueless guy who needs to better his whole act (down to the morals and ingrained habits of thought). What books / films should I read?
Thanks in advance,

If you don't 'use' it, you 'lose' it as it were.

Write your thoughts down, take notes, discuss it with someone, or pair it with something else associative to keep in in memory (but you still have to use the knowledge).

Have a moral code you believe in:
>I love God and Jesus
>Jews are evil
>Never trust anyone
>Nothing on this realm of existence matters
After that, always follow them as long as they don't conflict with your endgoal, if it does reevaluate your endgoal

Who was in the wrong here?

How is it possible to be so wrong?

The system is death
And I accepted it
But doesn’t that make me a skeleton?
Isn’t humanity invented by resistance?
“Life is coping” I say cynically
As I long to live
My bones are grinding against stainless steel

Heat. This is what cities mean to me. You get off the train and walk out of the station and you are hit with the full blast. The heat of air, traffic and people. The heat of food and sex. The heat of tall buildings. The heat that flows out of the subways and tunnels. It's always fifteen degrees hotter in the cities. Heat rises from the sidewalks and falls from the poisoned sky. The buses breathe heat. Heat emanates from crowds of shoppers and office workers, the entire infrastructure is based on heat, desperately uses up heat, breeds more heat. The eventual heat death of the universe that scientists love to talk about is already well underway and you can feel it happening all around you in any large or medium-sized city. Heat and wetness. What is the best literature that feminism has to offer? I think the whole thing is bullshit in the 21st century in the West but I want to give it a go.

Your post is vague.

What do you want? Protofeminism? Postfeminism? Just feminism? You can't just ask that and expect a serious reply. That's like asking what's the best book on Enlightenment during the Renassaince, there's a shitload of categories.
