The choice between Confucianism and Taoism tells you everything about a person.
28 posts and 4 images submitted.

suppose one rejects both in favor of Western thought?
>>
Buddhism is more pragmatic and transcendental
>>
Confucianism is why the Chinese have no souls. Or it was because the Chinese have no souls, that they invented Confucianism, it goes both ways. Either way, no western man should ever have an interest in that abomination.

Taosim can be redeemable.

The most spooked character of all time is Don Quixote. Poor man literally went insane from being so spooked by "chivalry."

Read Camille Paglia's essay on Melville beforehand, I don't think I'd have grasped Melville without it. It's in her book Sexual Personae.
Melville is far greater than Tolkien. I love Tolkien, but he is a scholar, an academic, and his work shows that. Melville is far more raw, far more natural, far more a man's destiny.

can it be skipped over easily

So I've just finished reading picrelated, and if before I only had some suspicions, now I'm absolutely sure that Mishima was just batshit insane. His prose may masterful, but it's also disgusting and repulsive. It was Mishima himself who said that beauty is honey mixed with poison. In this case, it's not even poison. Art like this is honey mixed with shit.

Now, coming to my main point. Do you know any good books where the characters are mentally healthy and ethically good people who are not suffering, or dying, or losing their loved ones? By "good books" I mean high literature, not adventure books or young adult fiction. Because it seems to me that most of the books that are considered masterpieces are either portraying madmen and perverts, or depict suffering and agony, or both. And I want books to bring something bright to my life, not make me observe yet more filth and pain.

Novels give you insight on people - you don't have this kind of insight in real life. You don't know the inner life of other people, in real life.
If you could, you would see what novels show you: everyone is batshit, everyone is perverted, everyone is weird.
Everyone is honey mixed with poison. Or shit.

>On the topic of music, Slavoj, what do you like?

I love classical music; I’m a mega Wagnerian – Wagner, Schonberg, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann. I listen for hours every day. I work to loud music. […] Of the latest music, I like bands like the German one, Rammstein. I disagree with those who think they are some kind of proto-fascist band. They do this wonderful thing – deconstructing from within; the charm of fascism, overidentifying with it and making it ridiculous. […]

pop music like you described is too distracting and i'd imagine a disgrace to them to be used as background music tbqh.

I find instrumental hip hop or jazz works best for me.
Classical music I find is too structured and harmonic so I end up getting distracted more

To all of you that don't have english as your native tongue. If you decide to read a book that was written in neither english or your native language, do you read an english translation or a translation in your own language?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9223565
If it's german, I read the original text. (Multi-lingual)
Otherwise, my own native tongue mostly, but it depends on the quality and even availability of the translation.
>>
>>9223565
Depends what your native tongue is. If the original is in spanish and you speak french, i would go for the french version over the english one, since its more closely related. And if the book is in german i would go for the english version. But the funny thing about english is that it copied grammar and words from german and french, to a degree. And with that paradigm, reading english translations of those languages is quite alright.

My native tongue is slovenian, and our language is quite unique and grammatically more strenuous than german and we took a lot from them language wise. And thats probably the reason why we master languages easier than other nations
>>
Own language, but only because we have the luxury of good translators.

"lit" is very general , you might love novels but hate theater .

What does /lit/ think of Bram Stoker's Dracula?

I'm reading it at the moment and enjoying every bit of it, but I don't tend to see it discussed on here much.

It's a classic that's aged poorly. The pacing is all over the place, Van Helsing and Dracula give off campy impressions. The atmosphere is one of the few things worth reading it for and even then it comes across as thin when there isn't something directly "creepy" going on.

I laughed like a king when I read the phrasing "make toilet" used more than once.
>>
The first 100-150 pages were amazing

Then Jonathan's girl comes in and Van Helsing and the book becomes a slog
>>
It's a genuine treat. It's accessible enough that most people interested in reading will have read it or will intend to read it, but it's atmosphere and pacing are gorgeous. It drops you into the horror pretty early on and then gradually develops it so you understand why Dracula and his affiliates should be a cause for concern (spoiler alert: vampires and ghosts are spooky, kid).

It probably hasn't aged perfectly but it's a genuine joy and you could probably burn through it pretty quickly.

In order to start we must check off the following:

- A reading plan
- The day of the threads (I propose Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday)
- Which translation do you guys have?

Okay I will check back to see if there are who are interested. Peace out.
