I'm about to finish the LOTR trilogy. Recommend any other good fantasy or maybe some sword and sorcery that I could find at my local comfy used bookstore.

(I read the first Malazan book, couldn't get into it.)

Can be high fantasy, dark fantasy, urban fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, whatever. If it's good and it's got any of the above, it's fine.
Bonus points if it's a fantasy though.
>pic somewhat related because I fucking love this franchise and because it's a fantasy with religious/mythological beings.

I'm about to dive into the works of Nicholas of Cusa. I'm tired and I find my soul in need of solace.

What interests me in particular is the doctrine of Theosis, as found in the works of Origen and the Cappadocian Church Fathers.

How are your studies coming along, anon?

>Struggle between wealthiest and noblest houses
>Prescience not only a major theme but a driving force in the plot
>Face-changing men and women who follow bizarre religious practices and belong to more questionable groups in society
>Use of religion as a tool to achieve a stronger rule and manipulate the populace, until it eventually gets out of control

So what book/series am I talking about?

Why doesn't /lit/ like to see ol googly eyes for the massively important and influential 20th century thinker he was? Is it cause everyone just read Nausea and called it a day, forgetting his large body of philosophical texts?

I personally take him seriously. That being said, Being and Nothingness isn't the easiest read in the world, so many people probably just dropped it and moved onto whatever right-wing nutjob is "hot" at the moment

English is not my first language but i want to really polish it to the next level. I want to be able to write blog posts or technical writing without troubles. Is there any courses or readings that have helped you to do this? When i google it there is this mass of information and some are too beginner for me. Its hard for me to find something that i need, since i don't even know exactly what i need. In short, what courses or books have helped your writing skills?

What are some contemporary philosophers that are consciously historical? I find myself unable to take seriously many of today's academics who tackle philosophical problems as if they are separate puzzles, and not part of a totalizing historical tradition.
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Contemporary I don't know.
But you may wanna look into Foucault
>>
Isn't the entire continental tradition predicated on this idea?
>>
>>9971305
Eh, not really. Certainly a lot of analytic philosophers seem to promote this idea, as to create a consistent Other of non-analytic philosophy that is supposed to be hegelian claptrap. But to think of "continental" philosophy as a single self-understood tradition doesn't really work, there are various schools and certainly not all of them think the history of philosophy should be relevant to the doing of philosophy.

hey, guys. i'll say it up front: this will probably be a stupid question.

when people refer to shakespeare as the greatest of all time, are they largely talking in terms of his influence? or do people maintain that he remains the best prose stylist, dramatist, poet, etc?

if the latter, could someone please point me in the direction of some key moments in his plays that might help me see it? i'm interested in hamlet because of its towering influence and in the tempest because of the story, but i've been examining selections for their greatest-of-all-timeness and evaluating them largely in terms of prose and emotion conveyed thereby. if i need to be evaluating them in a different way, that would be good to know.

sorry again if stupid question, and thanks to anyone who can help me kinda break into shakespeare a little bit here.

>>9971239
gee, you really are a dingbat. the answer is yes to all of those things. mere mortals like us will never be qualified to "evaluate" shakespeare because we simply do not have the critical framework necessary to do so. all we can do is bask in his genius. uhhhh but anyway read De Quincy's "On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth." It's short and very important.
>>
Shakespeare is considered the best both for individual quality and influence.
Debate on the former largely goes on whether the Sonnets Shakespeare or the Plays Shakespeare is better, but the Plays were quite a bit more influential.
>>
Sometimes I'm unsure if Shakespeare was truly that mind-blowingly good, or if all of the critics and analysts have created a depth that wasn't initially there.

How would you write this to make it sound less, forced? Or pretentious? I don't know I just don't like the way it looks yet.
Context, a nauseous person fell off a boat trying to vomit in a hurry

"He came to his senses to swim upwards, the sudden shock of cold an anathema to his sickness"
19 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I would

remove "anathema" (why use that?) and use a phrase/word that evokes visceral feeling of "shock of cold"

fix the "shock of cold ... sickness" clause in general: it's split between dispassionate third-person narration ("remember, he has a sickness") and visceral feeling ("the SHOCK of cold made him feel like SHIT because he was already SICK!!!!!!!"). It straddles clinical description of character's situation + attempt to make reader experience the character's action, at the same time

"to swim upwards" has the same problem sorta. Is he coming to his senses, and then deciding (feeling an instinct, impulse? desperately resolving to do something..?), or are you just describing "what he did" from the third person?

also, "to swim upwards" isn't right if what you mean is "he did x in order to y."

also, put the second clause before the first, because it proceeds it temporally, logically, and narratively:
>Visceral shock of cold, exacerbating feeling of sick-weakness (?)
>RESULTS IN
>Snapping back to his senses (animal survival instinct?)
>RESULTS IN
>Desperation/resolve to escape the water
>RESULTS IN
>Decision to swim, or instinctive swimming, to the surface
>>
>>9971234
>Why use that
well I think I used it wrong, to be honest, which is why Im taking it out.

To rephrase, the shock of the cold water temporarily removed all the effects of sickness on him, he regains his senses from the delirium of the nausea, then swims upwards to not drown.
I am describing what he did in the third person.

Forgive me, I am amateur as fuck.
I guess the reader is meant to empathize with his own feelings, so the tone I want is visceral, yes.

Also thank you very kindly for the feedback.

What is it about authors and contradictions that make some of them really good reads? e.g: Bradbury, Tolstoy.

I think you can throw Nietzsche in there too, he had a tendency to contradict himself a lot. I know he's regarded as a nihilist, but he's really, really, really obsessed with God and Jesus
