Anybody else think London was a bit pretentious?
"I seemed swinging in a mighty rhythm through orbit vastness"
God help retarded people, and those even worse off, like dear OP.
If that seems pretentious to you, just go on ahead and give yourself that lobotomy you've been postponing on for so long
I mean, what's even pretentious in that phrase? Express your thoughts, try and be more articulated than a wooden Planck with a buzzword stenciled on it
>>9253320
I think OP is trying to say that he believes Jack London is trying to impress the reader with fanciful writing, which is a bit pretentious. I still like the book though.
What does /lit/ think of The End of History and the Last Man? Or any of Fukuyama's other work?
Probably the most hilariously wrong work I've ever read, considering the amount of autism that went into it.
>>9253281
Know of his claims but haven't read "The End of History and the Last Man."
Most of his argument seems to rest on the premise that liberal democracy is better for "most people" (and thus "all people") than any other sort of extant state. By his definitions, it's hard to argue against this.
Does he have any actual criticisms of communism other than the stock "muh stalin" or "it hasn't been tried"?
>>9253315
It's primarily an economic and moral criticism - one he believes that Communism is destined to fail economically both to maximise the wealth of its citizens and as an overall system (tending towards collapse). And the general criticism that he believes it errs towards totalitarianism and restriction of freedom.
Is the passive voice really that bad?
>>9253277
not always, no.
>>9253277
It is preferred.
>>9253277
Usually it's not bad because it's inherently a bad construction, rather it almost always conceals more interesting logic or actions.
People generally don't mind when great authors do it because they know what they're doing.
Compare: "The People were given the Torah at Sinai." It makes no interesting claim about who gave them the Torah.

Hi Angela
whod've thunk it would be the right that that embraced post-modernity so thoroughly

How do you guys go about building a large vocabulary? Is it really as simple as reading a lot? Do any of you have some sort of method to remembering words that you've learned during reading? It seems that words only stick for me when i've learned a word which then comes up a couple times in subsequent readings or in every day life
Read a lot, and look up a word literally every time you don't know what it means. You have to be diligent about that.
>>9253168
I get that part. What I'm having difficulty in is remembering all the words I look up. I mean how often do you look up a word only to completely forget it a day or two later?
Posting some rare Wittgensteins I see barely posted here. Might be interesting.
Pics are from his biography.

I've only read the Monk bio, how's the other one? And wasn't there supposed to be one out soon or recently?

Are there really people discussing the "meaning" of different books. Are they retarded? I could ask the same about music or movies but I start here.
probably
maybe
>nggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
>>9252988
When you discuss a book at all, you're discussing it's meaning.
Books and art are nothing but "meaning".
How retarded are you?
I'm taking a class on modernism and I've noticed that there are an enormous amount of references to canon works.
I need to get up to scratch on it quick, focusing on narrative works. I'm not aiming at a comprehensive knowledge, just a solid foundation.
So I've started putting together a concise-as-possible reading list based on things most frequency referenced or alluded to. Am I missing anything terribly important? Is there anything I can get rid of?
CLASSICAL CANON
>Theogony? (need a concise overview of Greek mythology)
>Iliad
>Odyssey
>Aeneid
HEBREW CANON
>Genesis
>Exodus
>Numbers + Deuteronomy 31–34
>Joshua
>Judges
>Samuel
>Kings
>Job
CHRISTIAN CANON
>Luke
>Acts
>Revelation
MEME CANON
>Divine Comedy
>Paradise Lost
>Don Quixote
>Hamlet
Nah, that's pretty much all you need. Enjoy, OP.

Redpill me on reactionary literature
>Spengler
>reactionary
I don't think he is, he's just a pessimist philosopher of history, and his historiography is, frankly, pretty sketchy.
