He's alright. I really dig his interest in mythology which is apparent all over LotR. Dude tells a good story. His prose is rather lobotomized, but makes up a lot of ground for it with how much he gives a fuck about what he's doing.

I have a professor who has been trying to learn it for like a decade and she says she still feels like "an outsider looking in" with regard to the language.

I think you can get up to the point of basic communication pretty fast, but ever really enjoying the culture is difficult. Let alone truly classic lit.
