On the Genealogy of Morals
Is Ulysses a masterpiece of modern literature, or masturbatory tripe?
>>9279910
Fuck off you imbecile.
Why can't it be both?
>>9279938
>t. assmad potato scrounger
Shakespeare is overrated. All he did was compile famous archetypes and stories.
Fucking JK Rowling has a better body of works than him.
Ok, now I know.
>>9279881
>All he did was compile famous archetypes and stories.
He infused its characters with a unique and emotional psychology though that was very innovate at the time and its effects are still felt in literature today.
>>9279890
Fuck off. How deep is the character Romeo?
"Oh I wanna bang Juliet so bad that I'll kill myself"
Nice emotional depth. I think High School Musical: The Novelization has ten times the character development than Shakespeare's deepest work.
Who are the best writers/explorers of the world of mind?
Commodore Shitpants
>>9279784
You get the world of the mind in Hegel. And as an added bonus you get the mind of the world, too.
For me it's been Plato, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy (only for War & Peace), Homer, and Tennyson.
>want to publish in philosophy
>they want you to have already been published
>can't publish because every chance would want you to be published
what the fuck.
>>9279739
start with magazines and online journals. You might not get paid, but a resume can help.
>>9279815
I have not the slightest clue where to start searching for those. Just a google search doesn't tell me the ins and outs
You will only publish in philosophy if you've gone through the right academic channels and have at least your masters

What does literature mean to you, anon?
literature

A litmus test
early 15c., "book-learning," from Latin literatura/litteratura "learning, a writing, grammar," originally "writing formed with letters," from litera/littera "alphabetic letter" also "an epistle, writing, document; literature, great books; science, learning" (see letter (n.1)). In English originally "book learning" (in which sense it replaced Old English boccræft); the meaning "activity of a writer, the profession of a literary writer" is first attested 1779 in Johnson's "Lives of the English Poets;" that of "literary productions as a whole, body of writings from a period or people" is first recorded 1812.
"Hey, anon! I've started reading this book a week ago and I really, really like it! Have you heard of it before?"

Anyone here has tried writing a childrens book? Any advice or experiences?
take a university course in Writing Children's Books.
>>9279713
Here's some advice: don't make your protagonist a lens grinder in Omsk, or write about the Stalinist purges.
>Any advice
have a kid, pay attention to what they like, design a simple but interesting, attractive, and easily identifiable character.
Why is there such a division between the Arts and Science?
Many humanities students have disdain for STEM and many STEM students have disdain for the humanities. Is this some sort of Jewish plot or is there a deeper reason for this?
As per the board please touch on Literature/Philosophy in any responses.
>>9279667
there isn't, really. it's an artificial dichotomy perpetuated by butthurt pop-thinkers on boards ike this one because they're afraid that their special deep thoughts don't actually mean anything
>Why is there such a division between the Arts and Science?
There isn't really. Maybe in make-believe online world the argument is perputated by idiots who never went to college, or dropped out their first semesters because they were "too smart for it."
>Many humanities students have disdain for STEM and many STEM students have disdain for the humanities
No. I have a STEM degree, never met a single actual physical STEM student who hated humanities. Seen plenty of meme threads online about it, never met an actual person with the opinion though.
It's called getting a grip on reality. There used to be a saying, way back in the 90s or so, "I read it on the internet, so it HAS to be true," said sarcastically.

This just isn't true, visit a college campus in the modern day Grandpa.
What's your favorite NYRB classic /lit/? Looking to get some more as I've only read a couple

When you are writing, you should write for yourself, and not some vague semblance of an audience.
Yes? No?

I'm looking for *perfect* iambic pentametre works. Recommends?
(If not pentametre, other lengths are welcome)
---
I have discovered that I am metrically deaf. I would like to remedy this disability so that I may improve this aspect of my craft. The best way, in my estimation, is to expose myself to a lot of work that is written perfectly in iambics and hope it sticks.

I found this website via /lit/ and I want more people to know about it, even though it kicks my ass and doesn't tell me why:
