What does /lit/ think of pic related ? It's short, easy to read and a little bit interesting from a philosophical point of view, but I don't see how this guy got a Nobel prize.

I read it because a beloved-one said she liked it, but when I told her it kinda sucks, she agreed.

I don't see how half the laureates get the prize desu.

Easily one of his weaker works. When diving into modiano I always recommend to start with after the circus. Its his most commercial work that also captures what he's all about. His occupation trilogy is not all that good imo. The Nobel was simply given to him for being one of the first to write about France's involvement and compliance with the Holocaust. Though this theme does run through his work - an eerie sense of doing what you must to survive - it works best when it is cast in the background with subtly, which is what modiano does best. If you like after the circus proceed to young once, the cafe of lost youth, or (imo his best) honeymoon. Stay away from Paris nocturne and so you don't get lost in the neighborhood. They're essentially detective novels without detectives. The only reason to read them is to fill in the gaps from his other works, because yes all his novels are connected. Many of them are the same story told in different ways. This is frustrating to some but if you fall in love with modiano's style like I have you'll take what you can get. Imo he is absolutely the best modern author of capturing mood and atmosphere. I just wish he'd write about something else than 60s France or Vichy France. Pay attention to his sentences and you'll find yourself reading about a nonplussed man simply placing his head against a window whilst he describes the raindrops falling onto a sleeping city. And then the next sentence will absolutely wreck you. Modiano doesn't reveal much but when he does, it hits. This turns off a lot of people, especially the /lit/ crowd, but give after the circus a shot op. Hopefully there will be more modiano fags for me to sperg around with

call me a pleb but i have no interest in Faulkner and the pieces of him i have read i find to be the most overrated I've ever come across.

Maybe interesting to analyse but painful to try and read for any kind of pleasure and deeply pretentious overuse of "big" words.

Books on how to stop being a positivist? I can't find out another purpose of life besides "helping the scient growing up!", or something like that. I also usually think science is moar important than every other thing.

Maybe that comes from my veneration to technology.

I'll give it a try I guess:

I walked up to the woman in the mirror at the end of the hall. She saw me in the mirror, where we locked eyes.

"You look like my mother" I said, smiling.

"Um thanks." She said, staring at her iPhone screen.

"It wasn't a compliment." I said. She looked up. "Looks like you got a new text." She looked down at her phone. As her face moved down, I gave her a vicious Muay Thai right kick to the side of the head. "Lets fuck" I said. She consensually (ew) pulled Herman pants down. I began fucking her asshole savagely, punching the top of her ass crack. I pulled my dickhole out after ~50 haymakers. Her rectum prolapsed out of her ass like a small pink penis. I began sucking it like a dick. She didn't like it so I kicked her in the head again and continued. Right before I was about to cum a cop walked around the corner. He pulled his gun out but fainted after comprehending what I was doing. I'll fuck him after this bitch

Hi /lit/, I don't have values and I'd like some. I read kant's groundwork of the metaphysics of morals and I enjoyed it, but if my interpretation is correct Kant basically says what is ethical, what is not and why, which is good but I need more. What should I read about ethics? I'm planning to take Spinoza.

Hey, /lit/, what do you think about transhumanism? Are there any important books you've read on the topic?

“I believe in transhumanism: once there are enough people who can truly say that, the human species will be on the threshold of a new kind of existence, as different from ours as ours is from that of Peking man. It will at last be consciously fulfilling its real destiny."
- Julian Huxley

What does /lit/ think about Croatian literature and some famous Croat writers like Schonoa, Gundulic, Kumcic and many more.

No.

Šoljan's Kratki Izlet was pretty good. Not Croatian, but Andrić is GOAT, if a bit dry
>>
I bought the return of filip latinovicz as a gift for a friend who's travelling to Europe soon, and visiting her far away relatives because I wanted to give her both a book and something representative of the culture over there. Did I fuck up? Its worth mentioning that not many Croatian books can be bought in Spanish in South America, this was a pretty easy one.

Any other recs for the future?
>>
No you didnt sir. There are also many more great books in the Croatian literature like Kumcic' Zrinsko-Frankopan Conspiracy, Novaks The Last Stipancici and so much more. In my opinion in the eyes of other more cultuely developed conturies like Francesco or Russia they see Croatian literature as weak and poor
