Remember when this word had meaning?
>>9309218
i literally don't, no
Opening up the world wide web to all of humanity was a mistake.
Remember when "literally" was the only word in English language that could not be used figuratively?
Can I get some good audiobook recs? Thanks

Siddhartha has a pretty good audiobook.

>ohhh wowwwww so A is also always not A and so contradictions don't invalidate claims and I can thus ignore classical logic entirely and replace it with a made up dialectic of 'thesis + antithesis = synthesis' to come to any conclusion about anything I want by which i mean political conclusions by reducing the complexity of human history and existence into binary narratives about oppressor and oppressed and synthesising those opposites into something new and arbitrary based on my identity politics
EXACTLY

Just looks like word soup to me senpai.
The only philosophy I could process and think about meaningfully is that found in the likes of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, so I guess that is to say I receive it second hand.
>>9309047
That fucking image is neomemetic art at it's highest. It's simply a collage of three images, but the juxtaposition creates a certain je ne sais quoi that I can't ignore. The reflexive surprise of being enlightened on the face of a character from a medium/genre considered low brow. The stone-faced Hegel in the background. The subtle clash between artstyles, representing the semantic loss component of philosophy. Absolutely brilliant.
Redpill me on this. Is it truth or false?
I'm sure these were all pretty cliché already in the 80's.

A simple Wikipedia search shows Game of Thrones was first published in 1991.
This chart is misleading.

What are you talking about?
Can you be engineer and not believe in science?
>>9308872
You can be anyone and do anything. You just got to believe in yourself.
The further you pursue science, the more you realize that all of the things accepted as "truths" are just based on experiments and their inducted theorems. I believe humans are incapable of truly understanding the way the universe functions, and science, just like religion, is just a way of rationalizing it and "bringing it down to Earth", albeit in a more useful way than religion. But, plenty of scientific theories that were taken as manifest in their day have been proven false/iterated upon. Science is a tool, but mysticism still has a place.
No, because engineering is the application of theoretical models developed by science.
But I guess you can toy with some stuff with just trial and error.
>pick up random book off library shelf
>study it for no fucking reason
why can't I stop doing this lads
I should be studying something relevant to me or my course that I'm failing, but I spend all my energy studying 1800s Argentinian law or whatever... the freedom to just walk into a library and pick whatever uninteresting shite tickles my fancy is somehow addictive to me. Meanwhile, when I have a goal to studying, I can never focus or get comfy
Does anybody else do this? It *feels* productive, because more knowledge can't hurt right, but all I end up with is a lot of basic uninteresting scholarly knowledge on stuff that's completely irrelevant
>>9308830
>1800s Argentinian law
Are you in Argentina? At least when I pick random shit it's somehow relevant to Australia e.g. Boer War, 9/11, et al
avoid diversion, no matter how noble it seems
>>9308888
>Are you in Argentina
no kek
I like finding really obscure shit that no sane person would ever track down and read. I enjoy something about the thought of me being one of the only people to take interest in a topic. I like it when there are other people's notes in it too, I like wondering about who they are and why they are reading something so unusual
Am I autistic?

This is sort of what I'm thinking, it's really just a timesink that I find a sort of weird pleasure in and probably no better than playing videogames
Finally got around to dune and quite liked it. first book I read and completed in 2 years after I finally got a job.
are the others worth reading?
Yes, though your mileage may vary. Did you like the book more or less after the tonal shift/reveal? If more, definitely read the rest of Frank's books in the series (you can read the rest in the series written by his son in collaboration with other writers if you want additional closure, but I consider Frank's books a complete work on their own); if less, try the next book in the series and decide from there.

that pic doesn't mention the Dune Encyclopedia, which Frank Herbert famously admitted wasn't canon, but which is infinitely better than all of the Dune Prequels together.
>he considers himself intelligent

this is just inexcusable
a knowledge of french is perfunctory for anyone who takes an interest in the liberal arts
explain yourselves right now

I'm american and a student of french. Learning french to better understand philosophy and literature is what separates the genre fiction plebs from true patricians.

I'd rather walk the Earth deaf, blind and dumb than give any satisfaction that the French may receive from me learning to speak their language.

What is pitchfork for books?
Is there any reliable site that collects a lot of books reviews?
Kind of like rotten tomatoes with movies, but more in a pitchfork style but for books.
Would prefer critics opinion with arbitrary score given by them.
>implying Pitchfork is reliable.
>implying RT is reliable and not a fucking joke and cancer of film community.
>Would prefer arbitrary opinions with arbitrary scores.
Pic related is you.
>>9308624
Do you mean Metacritic? Pitchfork is only one review site, not an aggregator.
Anyway, Metacritic used to do books, but they stopped, maybe because assigning scores was hard/pointless. Would be really useful if there wassomewhere linking to all the reputable reviews of a given book, though.
>>9308751
pitchfork is mostly reliable with what /mu/ agrees is good music.
Probably not always, but in most cases it's good intro to what is worth listening to

how do i enjoy prose?
enjoying prose is the detached, nihilistic, cosmopolitan way of enjoying literature.
the plot of a story is the part that always has and always will fan the flames of your heart, fill you with emotion and linger on within you long after some prettily carved piece of prose has been forgotten due to the irreversible mutations and transformations of language.
that said, if you really want to enjoy prose, it should come naturally. if you don't, you're probably just not the right kind of guy.
I know how it feels. I like prose, but I can't enjoy poetry. I don't feel I'm missing out much, though. It's a big world, man.
>>9308453
Just pretend to enjoy prose - just go "mmm, those are some good words man" every few minutes while reading. At one point, your enjoyment will turn genuine.
