Why is Russian literature so damn good?

because they had a rich culture to derive their themes from, time that would otherwise be stale to fill with writing, across the vast winters, introspection that insists on there being no hypocrisy, even when it exists, and believe it or not, an influx of non-russians to inspire them and to join their literary traditions. also, it was an amazing time, the 18th and early 19th century for literature. a lot of worldwide communication, translations spreading across the lands, industry increasing and the promise of technology to bury the old world's problems.

or it could be the vodka.

Are there any legit, truly good books on female psychology/the female mind and how it works?

What good books on that topic would you suggest?
42 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Start from square fucking one and don't read anything by a male

A lot of female-written women's psychology and theory involves deconstructing patriarchy. A lot of male-written female psychology involves asserting female inferiority. See the connection?
Simone De Beauvior, Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, bell hooks are good starters. If you want to go all out, Mary Daly
>>
>women are complex meme
All you need to do is understand the female biological imperative: to produce as many high quality offspring as possible. Once you understand that, you understand everything you need to know about women.
>>
Don't bother, focus on your male mind and you'll never have trouble with women

/lit/ I need help.

I'm planning on speaking to a psychologist soon but I was wondering if /lit/ had some /lit/ to help me through this.

I don't know how far I should go back, but a quick rundown:

>fostered kid, grew up without my parents.
>once adult, got to know my mother more, but she was sick from unhealthy lifestyle
>she died after about 4-5 years of knowing her but living out of down ( for uni )

On the side:
>I am incredibly attracted to milfs and cougars
>met this one woman at the pub, we hit it off, go back to hers and fuck.
>she was over twice my age ( 55 to 23 )
>have a short "relationship" of sorts, fuck a lot, but I gave it up for some thot that I might be able to have a "proper relationship" with ( which immediately didn't happen)
>since then remained friends, but no sex.

so where it gets weird:
>after a few years of knowing her
>she needs a roomie to share some rent
>I need a place to stay as I continue uni
>2+2=4: I move in. I hope originally to respark some sex but failure after failure just made us both annoyed.
>I still think she's lovely, I give her flowers and shit because I'm attracted to her and I'm fine with not getting much back

>I now know for 100% certainty that she fucks her son ( 34yo )
>he actually flies up from another state to stay the night and fuck.
>he brings a hardhat and boots, and I remember her saying she likes construction workers, so I think there's a bit of RP involved.

Now I don't judge this one bit; infact the problem is just the opposite. I'm plagued by curiosity, I'm even a little jealous because I know that I could never give her the excitement that she gets from this arrangement. I just feel like I'm in a bizzaro world now and I don't know how to stop thinking about it. I don't know if it's because I love cougars or because of my own problems with my mother ( I've never wanted to fuck her but if she was more attractive and in health, would I? ) - I actually don't know how to process any of this and it's interrupting my own thoughts in terms of what I should be doing and how I should be living my life; I just keep thinking back to it and I want to ask her questions and I want to experience what they're going through.

How can I get help?

Clearly you haven't read Oedipus Rex or heard of Sigmund Freud.
Basically, you yearn for your mother and her affection, so you find older women hot because deep in your subconscious, you feel like you are banging your mum.
tl;dr appears to be Oedipus complex.
>>
>>9322950
I had figured the older women part of it was related to that, sure that's a pretty easy given.

Do you suppose the rest of it is related to very much the same thing?

by "rest" of it I mean my intense curiosity as to why she does it, and how it would make her feel, and the like?

I mean, it's most likely that it's all stemming from the one issue, but how can I deal with it? I can I go without knowing the answers?

It racks my brain so much desu

Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer's Night Dream, Richard III.

Get a good annotated edition, see a good production after reading it, keep an open, yet rigorously critical, mind when reading or watching Shakespeare, and keep in mind that reading Shakeapeare is both a never-ending process and an experience.

>Just as the Bradys were getting locked in jail, Lara randomly asked me, “Have you ever gotten a blowjob?”
>“Um, that’s out of the blue,” I said.
>“The blue?”
>“Like, you know, out of left field.”
>“Left field?”
>“Like, in baseball. Like, out of nowhere. I mean, what made you think of that?”
>“I’ve just never geeven one,” she answered, her little voice dripping with seductiveness. It was so brazen. I thought I would explode. I never thought. I mean, from Alaska, hearing that stuff was one thing. But to hear her sweet little Romanian voice go so sexy all of the sudden...
>“No,” I said. “I never have.”
>“Think it would be fun?”
>DO I!?!?!?!?!?!?! “Um. yeah. I mean, you don’t have to.”
>“I think I want to,” she said, and we kissed a little, and then. And then with me sitting watching The Brady Bunch, watching Marcia Marcia Marcia up to her Brady antics, Lara unbuttoned my pants and pulled my boxers down a little and pulled out my penis.
>“Wow,” she said.
>“What?”
>She looked up at me, but didn’t move, her face nanometers away from my penis. “It’s weird.”
>“What do you mean weird?”
>“Just beeg, I guess.”
>I could live with that kind of weird. And then she wrapped her hand around it and put it into her mouth.
>And waited.
>We were both very still. She did not move a muscle in her body, and I did not move a muscle in mine. I knew that at this point something else was supposed to happen, but I wasn’t quite sure what.
>She stayed still. I could feel her nervous breath. For minutes, for as long as it took the Bradys to steal the key and unlock themselves from the ghost-town jail, she lay there, stock-still with my penis in her mouth, and I sat there, waiting.
>And then she took it out of her mouth and looked up at me quizzically.
>“Should I do sometheeng?”
>“Um. I don’t know,” I said. Everything I’d learned from watching porn with Alaska suddenly exited my brain. I thought maybe she should move her head up and down, but wouldn’t that choke her? So I just stayed quiet.
>“Should I, like, bite?”
>“Don’t bite! I mean, I don’t think. I think—I mean, that felt good. That was nice. I don’t know if there’s something else.”
>“I mean, you deedn’t—”
>“Um. Maybe we should ask Alaska.”
>So we went to her room and asked Alaska. She laughed and laughed. Sitting on her bed, she laughed until she cried. She walked into the bathroom, returned with a tube of toothpaste, and showed us. In detail. Never have I so wanted to be Crest Complete.
>Lara and I went back to her room, where she did exactly what Alaska told her to do, and I did exactly what Alaska said I would do, which was die a hundred little ecstatic deaths, my fists clenched, my body shaking. It was my first orgasm with a girl, and afterward, I was embarrassed and nervous, and so, clearly, was Lara, who finally broke the silence by asking, “So, want to do some homework?”

>>

It seriously is. It's from his book, Looking for Alaska, which has won awards for childrens' literature.

English is not my native language, and I got interested in learning how to read poetry. In particular, I am now working on recognizing meters. (Figures of speech and literary devices are sort of universal among all languages.)

Any book/resources recommendations?

Also, I picked an easy poem and tried to break it down. I wrote <this> for unstressed, and [this] for stressed. Did I get it right?

<My> <beard> <grows> | <to> <my> <toes> AA
<I> [never] | <wears> <no> <clothes> BA
<I> [wraps] <my> <hair> C
<A>[round] <my> <bare> C
<And> [down] | <the> <road> <I goes> BA

Hmm. Is it:

My [beard] grows | to [my] toes
...
...
...
And [down] | the [road] I goes
>>
How about this:

<Shi><ning> [apples] A
<round> <and> [bright] B
<you> <are> | <such> <a> CC
<fall> <de>[light] B

How many authors make a living from writing?
Lit must be the least profitable of all arts: you spend a year writing one single book without having a way to gauge if it'll sell.
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
You can make money, you just have to understand capitalism.
Everything is based off templates, archetypes.
You see it easily in the movie industry, it isnt about art, its about wealth extraction.
Remakes, reboots, sequels, expanded universes, franchises.
Its really become insanity, they say lit is dead, but the art of cinema didnt last that long.

Okay, if you want to make money, look at whats popular, game of thrones, 50 shades of grey, young adult novels churning out the same heroes journey shit over and over again, that are then turned into movie franchises.
Who are the people with the most money who are stupid as fuck, women, young people, young white women.

Think in markets, who has lots of disposable cash and still reads books.

Or think in genre, genre is just the same archetypes and templates over and over again, fantasy for manchildren, scifi for man children.

There's no art to these things, you just have to market test things, whats popular, what does the market want.

The real goal is to get this shit made into a movie or tv show.
>>
basically you are turning your books into products to be consumed and disposed of, not works of art, art is something from the innerself, not meant to please, not something were the main goal is to make money, art is something that lasts through time.
You really have to understand the difference between art and entertainment.
The cave men werent drawing on walls to make money.

I just started reading the Phenomenology of Spirit (literally just started - 4rth page of the Preface), and I was wondering whether I'm supposed to understand it as a philosophical system (which for now seems to be: the unfolding of all knowledge is the Notion of the Absolute?/knowledge is both the bud and blossoming flower) or as one of the many buds and go full autist with it (and create my own system out of my incomprehension of his mind in its pure unfolding, and instead discover my own unfolding of truth)?
When he says "If, namely, the True exists only in what, or better as what, is sometimes called intuition, sometimes immediate knowledge of the Absolute, religion or being --not at the centre of divine love but the being of the divine love itself -- then what is required in the exposition of philosophy is, from this view-point, rather the opposite of the form of the Notion.", is he alluding to the truths a priori of Kant and it's quality of being an intuition and the fact that that is actually not the Concept (Notion?) of Truth but only the blossoming flower of the moment? Does he mean that Truth is unattainable? Doesn't that break a little bit with Aristotle's A is A? Is he the kind of philosopher Ayn Rand is against (there can be no actual Truth therefore everything could be justified blabla...)
When he says "to show that now is the time for philosophy to be raised to the status of a Science would therefore be the only true justification of any effort that has this aim, for to do so would demonstrate the necessity of the aim, would indeed at the same time be the accomplishing of it." Does he mean that doing something expresses the necessity of that something being done at that moment?
Is his Truth the understanding of every single thing that ever happened (included every single thought and intuition)?
Could someone give me some kind of base with which to look at his philosophy? If not I feel like I'm inventing all of his idea due to the obscurity of his words (or my inability to make out a single idea of his phrases but many and contradictory)
