Haven't read the first two, I'll have to check it out. Evelyn Waugh is an under appreciated Catholic writer. His comic novels are hilarious, and brideshead is essential Catholic reading too. Also, I never see anyone mentioning walker Percy around here. He's the type of Catholic writer that I think general /lit/ might like

Why don't you tell us more about him, then, friend?

Haven't been here for quite a while, is /lit/ pro- or anti-Zizek these days? And what is the newest philosophy-meme lately?

Pro-Zizek.

/lit/ is a /leftypol/ colony, all right wing literature is ignored or banned- though Zizek hardly needs any refutation from a right wing philosopher since his ideas are self defeating anyways.

anyone else know this feel? as in, they can't find anything new or interesting to read anymore or anything that transcends them past themselves?

I'm getting tired of reading about the same reasons for mans fall and how he can relieve/redeem himself from it. I want something more but I feel like we're limited in our ability to know. what are some ways to transcend or get out of this funk?

Poetry is basically writing that has been extremely refined, similar to how you see a sketch of a painting with extreme detail/precision, though it doesn't take up much space.

Basically it's an aesthetic pleasure that can let you appreciate what it's trying to convey in different/interesting ways, which can in turn help you in understanding.

It was your parents fault anon. You can use sites like citydata now to objectively find schools that are white, rich, and motivated to place kids in AP classes.

My small town has a male population that is 7% doctors. That is fucking 10000x the american average. It is also 96% white with the rest being asians and amerindian. My kid is 6 in full day kindergarten that has a goal for 100% literacy by 1st grade.

Who is your favourite contemporary dramatist?
Who is your favourite contemporary poet?

Are theatre and poetry even a thing anymore?
Is there contemporary poetry that does not sound like trite kitsch?

The most recent dramatist I admired is Thomas Bernhard ('The Force of Habit' and 'Histrionics'), but he pales in comparison to earlier and greater dramatists. As for poetry, I'll have to go back to Brechts later poems or some quieter stuff of Neruda. Honestly, the last poet that really got to me was Hölderlin and he wrote 200 years ago.

So, is there any worthwhile contemporary poet or dramatist out there? I hope so. Please help.

The only stage performance I have enjoyed in the last 10 years was hamilton, and that based purely on account of the music, as the revisionist history and post-structuralist themes were repulsive.

All modern poetry I see reviewed is again, post-structuralist verse predicated on identity and oppression. Unfortunately I do not know enough about the current "scene" to get past the gatekeepers of contemporary literary reviews.

That said, the most recent edition of the New Criterion has a lot on modern poetry

In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, young Victor names three authors that particularly influenced him:

Cornelius Agrippa, a German polymath, theologist and occultist

Albertus Magnus, often referred to as one of the most important philosophers of the middle ages next to more known ones like Aquinas. Alchemist texts were often falsely attributed to him.

Paracelsus, a swiss doctor who contributed to psychology before it was even a field, advocated empiricism even though he pissed off the scholastics, is generally known as the founder of toxicology and much more.

Do you know Anything about these authors? Do you have any of their works in .pdf .mobi . epub or really any format? I want to read them, just out of historical interest.

How you uh, how you comin' along with that novel you've been working on? Huh, George? Got a a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Got a--got a nice little story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 6 years? Huh? Got a, got a compelling protagonist? Yeah? Got an obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Got a story brewing there, George? Working on--working on that for quite some time? Huh, George? Yeah, talking about that 6 years ago... Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah, George?

>a reddit user tries posting on /lit/ for the first time

Was just reading in public and a girl (yes, she was attractive, I'll admit it) came up to me and asked me how I was enjoying the book. I promptly replied, "well, madam, I am enjoying this book quite well indeed). She was visibly impressed, for she knew how esoteric the material covered in the book was. To get to the point, she gave me her number and we are now dating.

Don't give up /lit/, you'll make it one day.

Anyone know some reading that will give confidence, or teach me to just not fear rejection so much? Sick and fucking tired of letting stupid things like what random girls think of me hold me back from asking one out, etc. Tired of feeling nervous in basic ass daily scenarios even when it doesn't have to do with women

I want this shit to come to an end, I just need someone experienced to guide me to enlightenment

You sound like me at about 20 years old OP. Don't stress out about it so much, these things happen, don't force them. Put your self in situations with people and it feels natural and easy asking girls out.

OP, I feel for you, I truly do. /lit/ will probably shit on you, but pay no attention to them. To be honest, books might not be the best solution right now. If you need a book, I would recommend Steppenwolf for its brilliant portrayal of a profound light hearted happiness that you should strive for. In my experience, the thing that helped me the most is focusing on my self. Creating a strong self, with ideals that you truly believe in, so that you are not constantly basing your conception of yourself on what others think. Accepting your flaws and knowing your strengths with truly deep introspection. This is much harder than I'm putting it, and above all it takes patience, and a willingness to live and to interact with others. Don't try to perfect yourself in the eyes of others, try to perfect yourself in your own eyes, in what you know about yourself. Because you alone know what you are worth, and the judgment of others is secondary, as they only have a partial and flawed picture of you. Just know that if you are patient, and remain hopeful, and continue to try to love and understand others, that you can become a true person, can put your image and belief in yourself above the faulty images of others. Just reading this won't help you that much, but in my experience living by these words and trying constantly to see the world through this lens has helped me immensely
