Is he the most based contratualist, /lit/?
>he were, at the same time, an proto-far left, psychologist of education and an existencialist
He created the most complex and hollistic system of philosophy among the contratualists. At the same time an huge influence on the Political Theory, Humanism, Romantism and fuckin education.
What are your personal opinions on his system, /lit/? Interesting or delusional?
he was definitely cooler than what academic critics give him credit for. but you should give us more Content than just a wikipedia summary of his isms
we SHOULD force people to be free. I have no problem with this.
>>9359749
I should give more content? Well anon, since the objective of my thread was just to start the discussion, i didn't really see any utility in doin this. But well, everything on his ideas decay in a system most similar to Nietzsche, that being - become what you really are, and what you really are is what humanity really is. That being, in his ideas, the liberal freedom of having a moral system based on intuitive compassion, and not on morals taught to you that only serve to continue the economic system.
Is this any good?

Is there anything to writing about your dreams? When I'm about to fall asleep I'll sometimes think or hear a sentence, just some random sentence that I feel I could base a story around. Does anyone have similar things that happen to them?
>>9359629
This is embarrassing-- but I once used to meet a person I was dating at a certain theater once a week that was a full three hours from where i worked, usually on a Thursday. I'd work all day, get there without eating as quickly as I could, then immediately commence falling asleep (and shaking myself awake) the moment the lights went down. These states of exhaustion elicited the most wonderful halbschlaf visions while the plays were being performed, some of which i wrote down, most of which were lost.
Yes; I once came back from a party where loud music was played for hours and when I went to bed in complete silence I could hear very loudly full sentences and even instruments playing along creating different songs.
Funny you mention this cause earlier today I dreamed a sci-fi story about some kind of LHC experiment going wrong and literally bringing about hell on earth
Reddit plebs hate this. What do /lit/ contrarians make of it?
I don't know about contrarians, but I like this book.
Granted, Holden's sexual abuse of Phoebe puts me off a bit, but overall I enjoy it a lot.
>>9359571
It's really good but Salinger wrote better stuff.
>>9359589
He never abused her.

How many books have you published, /lit/?
You mean real published or self published?

What's wrong with purple prose? How is it different from good description?
>>9359234
Information must be relevant to the story.
Imagine you're eating some good as fuck food.
Damn that was some good as fuck food. I loved the taste and shit idk.
Now imagine you're eating some good as fuck food again. This time there's more so you finish it all and you're full. But then there's more again so you go on and eat that. Then you puke because there was too much good food. You wish there was less of the food.
>>9359234
Ah, what isn't wrong with purple prose? Grandiose overindulgence for people who believe, falsely, that consulting a thesaurus will make their intelligence seem higher. How often I read a novel with purple prose only for it to make my countenance fall and my interesting change to naught. The quick page turning becoming slow as I must suffer myself to read this sesquipedalian verbiage. This excessively technical and overwhelmingly poetic language can make me feel like I'm drowning in a heavy lake of perfume with my breast permanently under the water and but for my neck I would drown. I only wish that I could read a novel that might get to the point quicker, that won't try so hard to make itself seem like a novel for geniuses of Newtonian levels. If I find a novel of short words with quick descriptions I find it invigorating, and the book will cleave to my bosom as I devour every word the author thought to put forth upon the page. Hemingway, he was a man simplistic in his methods and writing. That is how a book is. You look at a paragraph, read it, and erase it all but for just one sentence. All else is the excess and vanity of an author who believes himself more important than he truly is.
Was he, dare I say it, our guy?
>>9359223
Isn't he worshiped by STEMlords? This is probably the wrong board.
He got what he deserved. If he didn't want to be killed, he shouldn't've publically disagreed with the church.
>>9359231
For the wrong reasons. He was not condemned for his views on cosmology, but for his heretic views on central christian values.
Anyone have any advice for including acknowledgements in a 10,000 word undergraduate dissertation?
I'm doing an English Literature course and it was mentioned in a lecture that we can include acknowledgements e.g. 'thanks to my supervisor' etc., but I'm not really sure if it's standard practice or if it would look out of place and somewhat pretentious.
I don't want to not include an acknowledgement to my supervisor and them think I'm ungrateful, but equally, if my paper gets a shit mark it looks kind of retarded having acknowledged someone as though you've toiled over a masterpiece.
What do?
>>9359207
Just be a good boy and thank your supervisor, your parents and Jesus. It's not rocket science.

What if I'm a Chinese exchange student and Christianity is banned?

Then you aren't since Protestantism and Catholicism are two of the five recognized religions in China.
His prose is pleb-tier in Japanese. How do you Anglo novel readers think he's anything above average?
>>9359080
Anglos love stylistic minimalism.
No one thinks he is.
>>9359080
(Supposing pic is Murakami, since he does't have a sword and a samurai-headband)
I never heard anyone praising him for his prose. I like his personal mix of magical realism, nostalgia and sentimentality.
Which list is better, this...
>>9359073
or this?
read only what's termed 'orthodox', don't bother with any other heretics
>>9359073
You only need the one at the top. The rest will only get in the way.
>t. Protestant
My friend in the hospital needs something to read. It's also his birthday, and I'd like to celebrate it with something a little special. However, I don't want something too depressing. He doesn't read very much, so feel free to suggest something a little more basic if you want.
I was thinking something like Tortilla Flat would be good, at least as an example.
>>9359004
Good choice OP, Steinbeck is great for what you're looking for. I'd go with Cannery Row + Sweet Thursday or Travels with Charley though.
>>9359014
Any other authors that you would recommend though?
>>9359004
Has he read anything about King Arthur? Tortilla Flat is pretty funny but the entire thing is basically a parody of Arthurian legend and you'll miss a lot without knowing it.
I haven't read many funny literary books but my best recommendation is Don Quixote, one of Shakespeare's comedies, or The Importance of Being Earnest.
