Is it possible to be an autodictact when it comes to philosophy?
41 posts and 3 images submitted.

As interesting as it is, studying philosophy is harsh, time-consuming and require every possible scholarly trait you can think of. The main pro of universities is that you are in a context in which you are forced to do so until you get used to ir (just like in boot camp), and if you don't both you and the academic community will consider that as a failure.
So, to answer your question: it's possible if you're either EXTREMELY disciplined (imagine the discipline and dedication of a soldier or a surgeon), or if you're not lazy enough to fail at college. The first case requires an excellent human being, the second one can be done with a barely functioning one.
>>
Yeah, ez pz.

Philosophy has a fairly steep learning curve, but it doesn't take very long to overcome. once you get an understanding of the basic shit like the main areas of philosophy, biggest issues, and have an idea of how it has evolved chronologically so you can start from the beginning its not very hard.

You can't go wrong reading intros and watching Youtube for very entry level starting with Plato.
>>
>>9989856
As a side note, only philosophy majors, philosophy graduate students, and philosophy professors should be answering this question.

Prove to me you possess free will and can think critically. List one book - just one, that's all I'm asking - that you think should be considered a classic by a forgotten or obscure writer. Obviously such terms are relative so ask yourself if you've ever seen that writer discussed on /lit/ before - if not then you've got yourself a pretty good indicator. Actually, not even a classic, just a work that deserves due recognition. Bonus points if the novel was not originally published in English.

I'll get the ball rolling. Though this is sort of cheating as it is already considered a Dutch classic.

Came out of retirement just because of the first few chapter of pic related. So far, Plath's novel is probably the worst 'serious literary piece' I've ever read. I freaking love her poetry & journal entries -- how could she write such a terrible novel? Crossing my fingers that it's intentional.

Esther may just be the single most unsympathetic character I've ever read. I just finished This Side of Paradise and sure, Amory's a bit of a prick but holy crap Esther is just a disgusting person.

She:
-is an unapologetic racist (several racist comments in the first chapter alone)

-incredibly pretentious (meh straight A's, meh too smart for chemistry, meh mental superiority, meh prestigious internship); literally Neil DeGrasse Tyson

-atrocious writer (stilted sentence structure; "and x and y and a; or x or y or z"; uninteresting character descriptions)

-ignorantly judgmental (judges men on height and mocks men who are short; I'm 6'2 so don't think I'm butt hurt; judges her colleagues for stupid reasons; inexplicably judges Catholics)

-vapid

-selfish (vomits on a taxi driver's floor and leaves a few napkins to "clean up the mess"); leaves her help-seeking friend (who tries to help Esther find a guy) on a dirty hotel floor

-nonchalant about her dead father ("oh and uh, did ya know my dad's dea?")

-objectifies men

-doesn't have an ounce of self awareness

Is she intentionally unsympathetic? I trust Plath -- why are the first few chapters so horrible? How can people possibly equate Catcher in the Rye and this shit?

I legitimately think this is about on par with Twilight. And by saying that I intend to both play up the psychological elements of Twilight, while recognizing how much better Plath is as a poet than as a novelist.

Seems like Esther commits the same crimes of character any person might, while also dealing with a heavy bag of terrible internal conflicts. She seemed real to me, I like Esther, and thought her story was worth hearing.

this man is a fucking psued of the highest calibre. His outlook revolves around the superior beings "going down" into the by definition inferior world and somehow maintaining your sense of superiority. It may have worked once upon a time, but how can one honestly support the idea of "going down" into modern society? It's nigh impossible to avoid the taint of association, and with the modern world resulting in everybody being connected at every single fucking stage of the day it is fundamentally impossible to "go down" and escape unscathed.

Notes from the underground shows just what happens when one attempts to "go down", you lose faith in humanity through little deaths until you end up a misanthrope.

/lit/ how do you justify "going down" to yourself at night

I'm looking for books about Pirates (fiction, not historiography) that are actually good. Apart from Treasure Island of course.

Is there a book about pirates that's the equivalent of what Blood Meridian is for Western genre? Or something that captures the jolly world of swashbuckling depicted by Polanski, Verbinski etc? I know that Pynchon could write a book like that, but is there anything somewhat comparable?

Maybe High Wind in Jamaica, but I don't fully understand your references so ymmv
>>

Sabatini's Captain Blood is probably the high water mark of the sub-genre.

O'Brian's Aubrey-Matutin series hits similar marks better, though it's not about pirates.

The night stalker is a long creature. With long arms and long legs and a long, long neck.

The night stalker doesn't have a home, so after the sun has set and all the families have gone to bed it stalks from house to house.

The night stalker is looking for a house with just one room that still has the lights on. The night stalker is drawn to the light like a moth to a flame.

It sneaks up to the window and knocks three times. If you ever hear the night stalker knock, be quick to turn out your lights. Otherwise the night stalker will open the window and climb through and steal your light.

Once upon a time in France, two jews argued about major and minor arts. The alcoholic ashkenazi singer was explaining that he started out as a painter and that major arts (architecture, poetry, literature, painting, classical music) required initiation, unlike those silly songs he now was writing. Saying that songs were a minor form of art pissed off the brave arab jew singer, who said that it was in no way minor, and that no art is minor, not even cooking.
However, don't you think that songs, sometimes, are a much more powerful than /lit? They can make you cry, the can transport you to uncharted realms. The voice of a woman in the middle of the woods, singing a beautiful sad melody, is there anything higher?
