its non-fiction, but Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor goes into the whole "TB makes you an artist" trope. Totally weird thinking, but I guess it was considered romantic to have TB.

What's the best edition/printing of Euclid's Elements to read?

depends. Don't read latin for obvious reasons.

If you want to be a student of ancient geometry, read the green lion press edition

>best translation: heath
>large page size
>large figures
>quality paper, easy to write on, no bleed
>no distracting commentary from heath
>single easy-to-reference volume

if you are a lifelong student of mathematics who is only passing by, buy the heath

>best translation: heath
>smaller than the green lion press
>separated into 3 separate volumes, can be irritating
>good page quality as well
>absolutely exquisite commentary from heath

despite all of the pros of the green lion press edition, heath's commentary is invaluable, very good stuff in there, but as I said it can be distracting, and if you want to take seriously the idea of immersing yourself in ancient mathematics instead of just peering down at it, I strongly recommend you get the green lion press and don't buy the heath until you are sure of it.

If you want recommendations of parts to read from the text itself I can give them to you, as there is a great deal in there that any reasonable person might want to skip over (the articulation of dozens of kinds of irrational numbers in book 10 (making for 107 propositions) for example is something you might want to treat with a bit less weight and care as other parts of the book.

if you want a recommendation for the best greek edition of the text i can recommend one as well.

To start:

His biographers are mostly all named David -- D Lipsky, D.T. Max (?), Dave Eggers. Plus he did a piece about Dave Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress, and David Lynch's directorial work.

I'm not sure about this one; one told me about it: starting with I think IJ, Wallace was into controlling the layout of words on the 2-dimensional page. For simple proof of this, the phrase "top and / bottom" is split between the bottom of page 3 and the top of page 4. For a while in IJ he puts together little tableaux on each page, until he gets tired of it and stops; the explanation for stopping is given in the section starting on 144 about the rise and fall of 2-way videophony. He gets in a couple good pages, though, I think. I might have made a lot of this up.

p. 64 is a mini biography which seems depressingly short and suicidal, except for the fact that it contains footnote 26, which includes the filmography, which includes IJ (V) recursively. It also includes a footnote pun; he puts 25 on the word December to make Dec 25th. The page ends with an "untimely suicide at 54" which certainly would be untimely, as Wallace's scheduled bucket-kicking was at 46.

Why did blogging die out?

In the early-mid 00s it seemed to really take off, and there was a lot of real energy and fascination. It seemed like discourse and criticism had shifted to that whole arena, voices were emerging, etc.

Then in the late 00s it suddenly just dried out. Like it seemed like everyone burned out or ran out of things to say, but also that the wider audience migrated more to twitter and to youtube etc. Now it's more youtube personalities and twitter comments.

Did twitter, youtube, and social media kill blogging?

>What's the highest achievement literature can reach?
Bible status.

>What has literature done for me?
It taught me to be more introspective and empathetic. It improved my vocabulary, diction, and confidence when speaking to others. It gave me wonderful worlds that now feel like pleasant dreams, and it's always inspired me and encouraged me to always seek the beauty or simplicity in life. It taught me that I'm never alone, and even when I feel by myself, I have nothing to be afraid of because I understand myself better. It taught me to be patient, to listen, and to do my best for myself by others. And that greatness can come from anywhere at anytime, and to never give up.

The book has been a best friend of many throughout the ages. However, the world around us and the lives we live are rapidly changing. And the way we read is no exception. The e-book has fast become a popular alternative to the physical copy. With a host of advantages such as travel weight, bookmarks and lookup features it's easy to see why the e-book has grown to be so successful. However, as with all new technologies, the e-book isn't without its disadvantages.

>There is no reasonable doubt that existentialism will soon become the predominant philosophical current among bourgeois intellectuals. This state of affairs has been long in the making. Ever since the publication of Heidegger’s Sein und Zeit the avant-garde intellectuals have seen in existentialism the philosophy of our times. In Germany, Jaspers undertook to communicate the principles of the new philosophy to broader sections of the educated public. During the war and since its end, the tide of existentialism rolled over the entire Western cultural field, and the leading German existentialists and their precursor, Husserl, have made great conquests in France and in America – not only in the United States but in Latin America as well. In 1943 the basic work of western existentialism appeared, Sartre’s big book cited above; and since then existentialism has been pressing forward irresistibly, through philosophical debates, special periodicals (Les Temps modernes), novels, and dramas.

What does he actually have to say about existentialism? He's right about how and when it spread, but not he's really saying why, or talking about the consequences.

I've read enough of his repudiation of bourgeois literature to make some guesses.

Sartre's generation had serious tension with the mainstream basic bitch Marxists like the PCF and he definitely overhauled it with existentialism in opposition to them. There are certainly plenty of things to criticise about their approach, and the structural and poststructural were even worse according to many of these criticisms.

Did DFW have ADD? Or was that kind of writing style purposeful. Ive been reading Oblivion and got through Mister Squishy and Started The soul is not a Smithy. He spends so much time on "random?" (maybe not random) descriptive tangents. Is he doing it on purpose or is it a reflection of how he was in real life? Also general DFW thread I suppose.

why do we seek to pathologize degrees of normality
>>
>>9427724
I am just interested in if thats his writing style intentionally or accidentally.
>>
>>9427696
It was done on purpose. He wanted his writing to seem stylistically "fractured", which is also why he added the footnotes and endnotes.
