What are some GOAT adventuring books?
Something that makes you want to go on an adventure.

Reading The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings kind of did this for me. I know this kind of sucked for the characters in those books (particularly lotr) but the descriptions of the fantastical lands were goddamn enthralling.

well i mean hard to go past "on the road" and "heart of dankness". Fantasy not for me.

BTW, I have a hunch that the Nobel Prize for Literature is hogwash nowadays. I took a look at the winners and it seems to have been dominated by cutesy pomo tripe for the last several decades. But I could be wrong.

Back to Bob Dylan, though. He wrote some good stuff before he became a religious nut for some reason (or pretended to be one for several decades, who knows). Yes, he has a big advantage over conventional poets in that he put his words to music. But if that's not a dealbreaker for the concept of comparing him to non-songwriter poets, then let's ponder this matter a bit...

What's a 20th century poem that's better than Dylan's best?

How about I just name some poets and you can look through their work:

T.S. Eliot
Wallace Stevens
Seamus Heaney
Robert Frost
W.B. Yeats
Ranier Maria Rilke
William Carlos Williams
D.H. Lawrence
Elizabeth Bishop
Hart Crane
Paul Valéry
Thomas Hardy
Robert Lowell

I've looked at most of those poets' work, but I never found anything that I thought was clearly better than Dylan's stuff.

Anybody else think Jack Kerouac's travel literature is comfy as fuck?
Highlights include:
>hitchhiking and riding with various colourful characters, including bums, a beautiful blonde in nothing but a bikini, and Oklahoman teenagers
>smoking tea with jazz legends and Mexi beauts
>being locked out of doors in Brittany, France at 3am
>etc.
Can we get an appreciation thread?

kerouac has a poor reputation round these parts, but i'm pretty sure that's a result of most of us only having read the edited version of on the road. dharma bums is a beautiful work that captures something transcendent.

Loved Dharma Bums. His story about spending a couple of months as a lookout made me want to dedicate a summer to forestry, since I'm actually from Washington State.

>Achilles cries like a bitch for 3/4 of the novel after getting cucked.
>Lets most of the Achaean army get slaughtered.

He was a king in his own right, so his sitting out and letting Agamemnon get his ass handed to him wasn't exactly treason or anything. In fact, the whole war was over Agamemnon's brother getting cucked - would you fight by someone's side to get revenge for them when they did the exact same thing to you?
>>
>>9440916
he does whatever he wants and if you don't like, then good luck trying to win the war
he is the epitome of a superman (can't get the 2 points above U on this keyboard), and he reflects that
It's like:
>I fucking know I can win this war alone, but I'm su pissed I won't do shit until I want

Sadly, things didn't turn out as expected for him and had to pay for his arrogance, sort of. Some could say that he was a spoiled bitch, but I think arrogance was looked as a sign of strenght for ancient greeks.

Why didn't every army dip their soldiers in the immortality river so they can have an immortal army?

i just finished reading crime and punishment, the Garett translation, and i thought the translation was ok, but going forward in my ventures into russian literature, i figure id pay more attention to the translator

can you recommend me which translations i should seek that are the MOST READABLE? i dont care about the 'patrician' choice or whatever, you can memearrow in any other thread, but im looking for the most straightforward, most readable translations

works im interested (although, pls feel free to contribute any other works and good translations):

>war and peace
>the brothers karamazov
>notes from the underground
>anna karenina
> the idiot

Garnett Is the most readable. It's nothing like a real translation. Her Tolstoy sounds like Dostoevsky, etc. it's all smoothed out and incredibly inaccurate. P&V or don't even bother.

go on excel, make a graph with date on x axis and hours of reading on y axis. As the days go on, record how much you're reading per day (in hours) and get an idea as to how well you're doing. If you're neet, 8 hours is ideal. if you are in employment of some kind, 9 to 5, then 2 to 4 hours

and if you do work 9 to 5, then 80 pages, assuming ~45 pages an hour, isn't too bad.

If you're not doing as well as you could be, then just try to increase over time and use the excel chart as a guide as to if you're doing good or bad - remember progress becomes easier over time

the most important thing is self discipline and there is not easy fix for that, it has to come from within.
>>
I worry that I'm not reading well rather than enough. I tear through books but don't really retain anything and miss most of the subtext.
