Will reading make me smarter? I want to expand my vocabulary and be able to have a conversation that isn't about anime or video games. What books should I read?

Maybe after a long time. During that whole period you will be a pretentious psued until you settle into your intellectual peak.

My advice: Don't try to only read the most difficult books purely for the sake of having done it. You can do that occasionally, and you will learn, but you get so much more out of good practice and working at your competitive level than mindlessly reading words for 800 pages.

How much do you read now?
>>
>>9474972

Brian gains are even harder to achieve than muscle gains.

Reading will make you smarter but only after like 40 years of dedicated reading, and even then there's a 90% chance that you'll just turn into a pseud
>>
>>9475201

Also if you decide to embark on the /lit/ life yet you remain monolingual, then you are automatically relegated to perpetual pseudhood

“Among the tales of sorrow and of ruin that came down to us from the darkness of those days there are yet some in which amid weeping there is joy and under the shadow of death light that endures."

This book is a prosaic masterpiece

definitely. I feel like Tolkien was a legitimate literary genius, not just a world-building genius, holding back his power level and forsaking his path to greatness for the sake of bringing joy to millions of people. The man invented entire languages, for christ sakes.

I've never read any Tolkein, because I've always disliked genre fiction, and particularly fantasy. Where should I start with him?

I really enjoy writing and want to go into technical writing as a career with a minor in CS.
I don't like to read all that much. I mean I do, but not really.
Should I consider a major in English or Writing studies for what I want to do

>I don't like to read all that much. I mean I do, but not really.

You're sure to go far in technical writing with such lucidity as this.
>>
>>9474775
Or I could just call you a moron for thinking that I would attempt to expose anymore than a fragment on this forum.
>>
>>9474787
If you want to call me a moron nobody is stopping you. I think there are too many qualifications, doubts, and contradictions in your speech. Well, do you like to read or not? We're still not clear on this simple matter. A good writer is also a good reader.

De Rerum Natura is the perfect intro for proceeding with romans
>>
This is one of my favorite books. Surprised it isn't discussed here more often. So far I've only read the Oxford Classics AD Melville translation which is good for the most part, but I think I'm going to like the Everyman's Library Allen Mandelbaum translation more. Of all my research those are the only 2 being worth reading because the other translations have either inexcusable errors (one of them has a rap battle with literal nignog slang) or are lame prose translations (which would suffice if you're into that).

Is there essential slam poetry or is mostly just garbage?

I've listened to some Savannah's poems, but wasn't very impressed.

Slam Poetry is not popular on this board. I haven't listened to much, but from what I have listened to it has sounded mostly formulaic, and more about the delivery than the poem itself. Many of them would not stand alone as written word.

Danez Smith is pretty good.

Steve Roggenbuck is technically slam tho he's p hilarious.

Question(s) of the Day: What is Humor? Where does it come from? How is it used? I submit the following to you:
Humor is the ability to evoke or elicit laughter or amusement. What specifically causes humor is hotly debated, but there are the three most biggest contenders:
Incongruity-resolution-the brain is given conflicting information and must create coherence from the absurdity of a situation.
Benign-Violation theory-humorous statements are violations of our values and beliefs that we actively accept, and we laugh as a result.
Arousal-Safety-our brains are aroused and expects an outcome, only for the outcome to be the opposite of what is expected; it's similar to irony.
Humor is very often used as a social bonding technique. It can also be used to belittle others, or to ridicule ideas. Although a lot of things stated about humor are obvious, what is not obvious is how to achieve Humor. I believe it is about connections: both interpersonal connections and connections between Ideas. We can relate and make people laugh simply because we mention something they are familiar with i.e. jokes about suicide between emofags. Connections between ideas are more important, however, because that allows for high comedy.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware literature and humor were mutually exclusive. My bad. I was sure that a board dedicated to the art of the written word had some people with a sense of humor, but apparently I'm a big ole dingus. Thanks for pointing out this is a /lit/erature board, for I wasn't well aware of that fact.

I really struggle to understand what Rimbaud is talking about half the time.

It is beautiful, but I cannot understand it, at least to the point where I have a concrete understanding

Is this what poetry is about?

Like with most poetry you don't have to worry about what it's about. You just have to enjoy the way the words sound.

I shitpost until I'm so tired, literally on the brink of sleep. I mean a 3 or 4 day shitposting binge. I mean twenty+ hours a day (currently unemployed, piss bottles) I mean fingers on the keys always. I developed enough dexterity in feet to feed myself small items...mostly walnuts due to high fat count and cal count which keeps me alive. When I feel myself on the brink of sleep I walk to a kitchen table to an empty piece of paper and my pencil and I begin. Because I cannot really think straight a single word or two comes to mind and I put it down on the paper. That is the title. Then I kind of space out and think about nothing in particular very deeply because my sleep deprivation doesn't really allow me the presence of mind to end the thought. This goes on for some time but I cannot really tell how much because I'm too tired to read the clock. Excellent and strange word combinations come to mind but the problem is these combinations always include a repeat of one of two words so only one of the combinations can really be used. Before I can write it down I feel the urge to see if anyone responded to my last shit post. The glow of the screen hurts my eyes and I close them for a second only to find I've awoken 9 hours later fully rested and only able to form the most cliche and useless expressions.
