You're right. Discussing why/how Shakespeare was a hack, is needlessly difficult to read, and how no one can truly read Shakespeare unless they've studied Homer in ancient greek is more /lit/ territory. Why don't you go make a thread about that since you're not at all busy being a thoughtful human being, you sniveling, illiterate gooch-termite?

Lads we gotta let go of this reading the classics bullshit. Everyone knows what classic books are good. We got the charts. We need to read contemporary authors. We need to look at the last 25 years. We all know ishiguro, gaddis, Mcelroy, wallace, Gass are great. But who else? Who will carry on harold blooms legacy. We have to get current. More books are being published now then ever before. Who will sift through all this? It has to be us.

Not good enough.
We also have to read the classics that haven't been published yet, whose authors won't be born for centuries.

ok, go read some new books and come back to us

Woah woah woah. I love gaddis. He is one of the greatest of the 20th century. Top 3. J R and the recognitions and I guess agape are all top shit. I wish more people read him. What was he trying to say with the recognitions. My tiny brain can only begin to grasp at the straws. Is everything fake? Is all of life just one giant shit fuck and you best learn to play it fucked up? Even piano guy got fucking wrecked and he was a genuine beta.

I fuckin doubt it. Give me one good reason

I am weighing the possibility of cheating on my girlfriend.

I need some book recommendations on the ethics of commitment and betrayal.

Any suggestions?

Pic unrelated.

I can never get a consistent answer for this, so I've decided to ask /lit/ who would win in a one on one battle to the death under the given parameters: Odysseus or Beowulf?

Location: Lets go with somewhere neither of these two have been before, so I'm going to pick the Fire Swamp from the princess bride

Both are in their prime. Both men are nude and unarmed and at the mercy to the environment around them.

who wins?

>>9557463
Nude beowulf would win. If given choice of weapons, Beowulf would still win. Sorry but the norse just have more dramatic hero tales.
>>
>>9557463
Beowulf obviously, is this even a fucking question?
>>
>>9557463
Given that they don't share a tongue, Odysseus is fucked.

The last 10 years of literature in my country has been a plethora of beyond mediocre crime novels and half modern artists half psuedo intellectual breeds thinking they've seen the future and all it will bring. That's at least what I've seen.

Is there any hope for Swedish literature? Does /lit/ know any recent good Swedish writers?

I would like to ask you, dear OP, do you know a reason why whole Sweden is writing crime novels? Maybe when we find the cause, we can eliminate it and Sweden will be /lit/ again. :)
>>
Karl Ove Knausgård is everything your country is not.
Just start telling people you're from Jämtland.

>tfw I only see novels as entertainment but mountains and mountains of pseuds claim otherwise
>tfw have to read mountains of boring as fuck stuff or else people will claim I'm dumb

If I actually listened to my own tastes I would have stopped reading Brothers Karamazov within 50 pages. I would have given up Nicholas Nickleby after less than 200.

Unlike many other people, the writing or style is rarely something that makes me give up. Neither is length (I recently read three 500+ page James Ellroy books in quick succession, though I know that doesn't count because they were enjoyable). The reality is that these books are filled with stretched out trite nonsense. This was the pulp of its day and now everyone pretends that every single sentence contains profound psychological and philosophical insights and you have to pretend as well. That makes everything doubly excruciating. The book is crap and I constantly imagine the pseuds' specious reasoning about why everything is profound.

Oh, some half assed aside about whether religion is inextricable from government! If I point out that only a pseud could claim that this is answerable a priori (and even a posteriori you could never claim two starting positions are equal) the pseuds would claim it is merely characterisation, a novelistic conceit. When I claim that it was fucking boring they'll claim it is profound.

This is depressing. I once forced myself through an entire 80+ page (and it was the giant collected works edition with tiny text) Plato dialogue where he speculates over whether names are arbitrary or "truly" reflect the "nature" of the thing being named. This is horrific. But pseuds claim I'm supposed to suspend my bullshit detector and pretend this is profound. And after 500 topics like this, one of them may admit that it was a bit stupid, but what about the "literary interpretations" (i.e., incoherent or unfalsifiable extrapolations i.e., bullshitting)? Or the "historical value" (i.e., a bait and switch where you come for the insights and are held hostage by the threat that you have to find all of history interesting or else you're uncultured and stupid).

Of course I have to mention the awful literature related acaxemic departments and their suspiciously incoherent or infinitely malleable and unpredictive "theories", but if they are academics they must be smart, am I right???

Does anyone else hate the fact they know a language?

All of my thoughts are framed as dialogue - when I think about a topic all I really do is have an imaginary conversation with someone in my head about the topic. I plan out sentences I might say, adjectives I might use, etc etc.

But the problem is that words are all mundane. I didn't invent them, so I only have a clumsy grasp of what they mean. Because I think in English words therefore, all of my thoughts are muddled and slightly ambiguous in their meaning. It would be better if I thought only in a language of my invention, but it still would be partially flawed.

I wish that I could somehow forget every language or method of communication I know - I feel that then my thoughts would at least have the chance of being something higher, something greater than myself. The way my thoughts are pinned to the English language depresses me.

I wish I had never been taught to speak or write as a child, I wonder what my thoughts would have been like.

>he thinks that Homo Sapiens Sapiens can be Ubermensch

With Ubermensch Nietzsche was clearly talking about more evolved humans, who will slowly achieve perfection in tenths thousands of years from now. Our job is to guide and steer our evolution in that direction: we are but a bridge to the Overman.

Threadly reminder that the ubermensch is merely an individual capable of creating his own values. If you can do this you are the/an ubermensch.

If there are any ubermenschen out there, please respond and provide us a new moral framework. The Judeo-christian system is crumbling, europe needs a new direction and new values if it is to survive and thrive. Save mother europa
