Anyone have any tips for losing weight? Never on HRT but lived/passed as a guy basically since I came out in middle school up until my first year of uni. Detransitioned/put transition on hold due to family issues, struggled with (even more) depression and gained a lot of weight. Now I am considering resuming transition (and getting on T) but want to get healthier as well. I'm roughly 100kg and 166cm, so quite overweight. Okay, shit you will need:

1) Get a scale if you don't have one already. This should be obvious, but you have zero idea what you weigh without one and it's easy to lie to yourself.

2) Track your calories somehow. "Eating right" (if by that you mean "not eating junk food") is a decent start; but it probably won't get you that much lighter past a certain point without actually counting. If you're overweight, statistically, you're likely to underestimate your portions regularly. Some studies have found obese people in particular to underestimate their daily caloric intake by as much as FIFTY PERCENT(!). Needless to say, if you're off by that much, you haven't a hope of getting to a healthy weight by guessing at what's "right."

An app like MyFitnessPal is my strong recommendation. I believe that app has more foods loaded into it already than any other, allows you to scan food packages with your phone and has other nifty features.

3) Get a FOOD scale, digital is best. This will help you track stuff you make for yourself. Otherwise your options are entirely pre-packaged food that lists calories (bad) or wildly guessing (bad). If you absolutely have to you can estimate your portion sizes, but try to avoid guessing when you can. Also, look for visual guides out there for estimations - portion guides like pic related can help.

4) Optionally, any equipment for exercise. However, the most important thing you need to know about weight loss is that it's 90% diet. You ABSOLUTELY CANNOT exercise off a bad diet - you just plain won't burn enough calories exercising to offset a bad diet. It would take a hard run to burn through ONE Mars bar vs...just not eating the Mars bar. Exercise is for overall health, physical stamina, toning & building muscle, etc. But not weight loss so much.

Okay, so here is the most basic formula. You need to know your TDEE (basically, the number of calories you need to eat in a day to MAINTAIN exactly what you weigh now) and then take 20% from it..

Assuming you're lightly active, I calculate your TDEE is around ~2100, so you wanna aim somewhere for 1650-1700 calories a day to lose. (If you get MyFitnessPal, it will calculate this for you, btw.)

Make sure when you are tracking your food that you look closely at food labels and understand exactly what the portions either. Calories will frequently be listed by some kind of serving size and not the whole package, so be very careful to watch that.

In general, you want your diet to have variety and still contain things that excite your tongue, or you're going to get bored and frustrated very fast. But even a little bit of junk will eat your calories VERY fast, which means either you will be hungry or going over goal constantly. Eat smart! It's maybe an Instagram cardio bunny/Fitblr meme, but you really do wanna replace foods with healthier options, e.g.:

- soda pop: some people do club soda with lemon slices and shit, but I find it too bitter so I recommend different flavours of iced tea instead. If you've got some cash, getting nice flavours of loose-leaf tea is the way to go. You can sweeten it yourself, and it will still be WAY less sugar than pop. Generally, drink as few calories as you can. It just adds calories to your diet without satiating you.
- chips: add some seasoning salt and other spices to crisp veggies. I love cucumber slices.
- candy: frozen grapes

You get the idea.

DO NOT HANG AROUND OTHER FATTIES. You might be tempted to add other fat people on MyFitnessPal as friends, that kind of thing. Don't do it; they're crabs in a barrel. It may be hard to face, but surround yourself with people you wanna BE, not people who reflect your own flaws.

For "eating right," I guess I meant mostly just cutting out sweets/snacks and juice. I don't really drink soda but I drink a lot of fruit juice. Also, eating more veggies. My doctor recommended eating the colors of the rainbow but so far I've mostly just got orange/green on a daily basis, working on eating more veg. I eat about 2000cal/day with a lot in carbs (Asian, I eat rice with basically every meal) so I'll be using your advice from now on. I didn't even think about a food scale, either. Personally, I'm a fan of 0 calorie, electrolyte flavor drops. You add it in moderation to water for taste. Buy lemons and lime and add the juices too for vitamin C as well, because fruit juices is not worth the calories. Raw fruits are better but I still find the trade-off on calories not that great.
Protein is more satisfying, jerky is great if you can afford it or make your own. It lasts a while if you take your time chewing it and fills you up. I can eat a strip for 60 cals and it'll fill me up as a snack.

We'll probably never know in our lifetimes unless someone funds more tranny research but there's no incentive for anyone to do it and some to further the status quo (AGP is already used to fuel transphobia, imagine what would happen if it was actually linked to paraphilias)
