No, they can't if their reasoning is discriminatory in nature with regards to a person's status as a protected class.

These are not "extra special laws protecting you." These laws protect everyone. An employer should not be able to fire you for being straight just as much as an employer should not be able to fire you for being homo/bi/pansexual. That said though, one of those situations is infinitely more common than the other.
