No bonus pay. All I get is stats, and that's because they're legally required to give me stats. I very occasionally get overtime but that doesn't give much when you make minimum wage.
They are legally unable to give me less than 8 hours between shifts but that's been sidestepped before by giving me a buffer day where the shift is less early. Means for a period of about 72 hours all you do is work and sleep and wake up 5 hours earlier each day.

I've heard nothing definitive. The professor I want to work with is unsure that she has funding for a student and I've yet to be accepted/rejected in general.

you can't blame it all on that maybe a bit. the import of cheaper workers and cheaper products form other countries destroyed whole industries (in germany at least). many jobs that were popular 10-30 years ago are completely done by people who don't even live here which is not only bad for the foreigners but also for us. they take jobs germans could do way cheaper so no jobs for germans and bad pay for foreigners. it kills small and medium sized businesses because nobody wants to do these jobs for low pay and people have to move on and get "better" jobs but the truth is most can't.

Idk, I loved running syntheses and optimising reaction conditions. I loved the parts of it that felt like they required some amount of artistry to carry out correctly (recrystallizations, manual addition of reagents etc.). Baking isn't really the same, but the reality is you're carrying out a reaction on a large scale and every factor counts in the final product. Then there's developing and tweaking new recipes.

My ex was a baker, I know that it is very physically demanding work, and that the hours are long. Pay isn't stellar either, it's enough to live on though.
The problem is lack of opportunities for advancement, what made him leave was that long term your only option was to start your own business.

On the other hand, if I went down that road I would almost want to do something chemistry related. There's plenty of opportunities to run small chemical related businesses but gaining investment would be difficult without experience and a very solid business plan.
