It really does seem like a form of self harm. It probably prevents further meltdowns because it removes you pretty much entirely from any scenario where you can do harm to others and that's freeing in its own way. however, keeping distance because you don't want to hurt others isn't being fair to yourself. Sure having friends creates that danger that you can hurt others if you harm yourself or go back to drugs, but that also in a way keeps you safe.
