Is there an english term for this?

I always see it translated as trap, but it's not very accurate, since people often inclue transsexuals, while otoko no ko doesn't

Then again "femboy" doesn't imply necessarily looking female, so it's not really good either

Problem with Japan and T is that terminology is inconsistent as hell. There are multiple terms, all the terms generally confuse the three English terms: trap, trans and crossdresser, and even real honest to god trans girls there tend to call themselves crossdressers. Plus you have weird terms like "New half" or "otokono" that can mean any of the three English terms.

Most asians are also shorter, which helps with not developing said features so strongly and to western eyes fits better as roll of women.

In western culture it vaguely seemed as if we were trying to pick up convincing cross-dressing but sometime around the fallout of the LGBT movement of the 1970s everything went all "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and its like europeans/americans stopped actually trying, mostly doing it to be satirical/entertaining.

Generally speaking its most used by straight friends who find any effeminate crossdresser passable enough to have weird thoughts about them, it doesn't have to be "perfectly passable" as such a thing arguably doesn't exist :p, what important is that the illusion is good enough and that in itself is subjective.

Just because people use inaccurate terminology doesn't invalidate the accurate meanings of terms. It's like how people keep using "modern" to mean "present day" when, in fact, in historiography, "modern" means "between the Middle Ages (usually taken as 1492 but some tryhards use 1453 instead) and World War One" and not present. So 17th century France was, in fact, -modern- France but people wouldn't understand that.

And, yes, trap has to be perfectly passing because the entire point of the term is that it "traps" unsuspecting, usually straight males, in to thinking that's a girl when in fact it's a guy. Mind you traps are, by definition, NOT trans women, passing or unpassing and vice versa, passing trans woman is not a trap.

And crossdresser is just a guy that wears women's clothing without any dysphoria, regardless of how he actually looks like in female clothes.

男の子 literally means male child. The idea of otokonoko as a pun for traps comes from them replacing the last kanji with 娘 (musume) which means daughter, but can also be read as "ko" just like 子. So when you combine it to make 男の娘, it literally means "male daughter" but is still read as "otokonoko" which is why it's a pun.

There definitely are; futaba channel's josou board used to be filled with photos of them, although at the moment it seems that's mostly been replaced with 2D draw-a-girl-call-it-a-boy images. This was the only one when I checked, which isn't even that bad, but I've seen much worse in the past.

I think "trap" is a good translation of otokonoko (I also think "femboy" is a good translation, or if you want to be very literal then something like "boy daughter" or "male girl"), but your etymology is a bit off; "trap" started in /b/ when people started replying with Admiral Akbar's photo and catchphrase "it's a trap!" when others were posting sequences of photos of pretty-much passably feminine looking people (of whatever sort) with an eventual dick reveal. It did relatively quickly evolve into mainly referring to male-identifying sorts (in 2D, characters like Bridget and Watarase Jun; in 3D, linetrap, although she later transitioned), and only more recently have 'shemales' really started using the term (although I'd question the distinction between them and 'actual trans people', quite a lot of them are regular transwomen doing porn to pay for transition). Anyways, tl;dr: "trap" doesn't come from "otokonoko", but it's a good-enough translation.
