It's not that much of an idealization, actually. It's basically every hetero friendship I've ever had, but turnt the fuck up, a constant thing, and with a hot guy. The ones I have had have not so much faded away as never really existed outside of just "we interact a lot and enjoy each other's company." Man, I want exactly the same thing. I've longed for a friendship like that for the longest time, and while I do have some really good friends, it has never been like that.

I guess in my case I am idealizing it a little. Honestly, I don't know of any adults who have this kind of friendship with anyone. It's certainly easier to have a 'bestie' when you're still in high school or something like that.

But I've learnt that translating that need to a relationship won't always been the greatest idea. Not only because if you break up you lose both your bf and your best friend, but also because sometimes I would want my him to "turn off" the boyfriend mode, and turn on the best friend one, or viceversa. And of course people don't work like that, so I would get angry for that stupid thing.

I have really high standards of how muscular I want to be, which is why I personally am "beginning my weight lifting journey" even after almost a year of lifting. I am pretty fit but I'm also realistic - having abs doesn't make you "muscular", and being muscular doesn't always mean you have abs.

Still, I outlift most, if not all, of the guys I've ever been with. Not necessarily because I'm stronk, but bc most people nowadays are weak as fuck.
This actually reminds me of the first guy I kissed. He was this fat dude with amazing eyes, a great face and a charming personality. If he lost weight and got swole he would easily achieve god mode, but he had depression. He would eat all kinds of crap and had self-harm scars. Once he invited me to his place and his LUNCH was ICE CREAM. He was just scooping ice cream directly from the bucket, didn't even bother with putting it in a bowl or something.
It was such a sad sight. Once he asked to see my routine, and when he saw how much I lifted his face became so desolate. I convinced him to go to the gym, but he only went there for two weeks and stopped.
He's still as fat as when I met him. We see each other, from time to time, and things haven't improved at all for him. Shit's sad, guise.

And I'm so used to being around people with depression because of family and friends, being with him felt so natural. At the same time, though, his depression affected me so heavily and, ultimately, I just couldn't stand him any longer. In the end he admitted to being jealous of me, because I was in a better place in life than he is. He had every resource to be so much better than me, but he blew his chances.

Actually, my mother is a professor on the local med school and she often tries to set me up with her (male) students. I know she means well, but her taste in men, or the kind of students she has, is so fundamentally different from what I'm looking for.

I think having a variety of friends is only a good thing. Being gay is a unique experience that, frankly, straight people just have. Having friends with that unique perspective is valuable, I think. If lifting is an interest and you're at a place where people go to lift, there are people there who share at least one interest with you. Usually they're fine people and plenty of us like to talk to others. Locker room and water fountain are the big ones, but if you aren't autistic you could probably have a decent conversation with someone who's just resting between sets.

I haven't made any lasting, long-term friends at the gym but I have a couple guys who I see sometimes. We know each other's names and sometimes spot each other.

The real trick is ignoring those faggots who think that making friends at the gym is weird. They look at you like they stepped in something gross, all because you dared to ask them about some stupid shit while they were busy maxing STR in their single-player RPG.
