Dorms are fine as long as you get a roommate that respects your space. I can't speak much for the other stuff you asked about though.

I roomed with 3 other girls and got along great with two of them. The other one kinda did her own thing, but we got along ok for the most part. It didn't help with studying at all and I dropped out, but that was probably inevitable.

FtM here, I got stuck in the female dorms and hated it. Beyond being right on campus and getting me involved in campus activities, it didn't help much at all.
