when you look in the mirror you are seeing yourself with two eyeballs, the same way everyone in real life sees you, and with a camera it's just one lens and suddenly you are flat without actual depth so shit looks weird.. and if it's a phone camera it's going to be shitty and a bit greyed out which just makes things flatter.
also the mirror is your image flipped, which you are used to, and a camera shows the opposite, which is how everyone else sees you, but again.. flat and weird

In highschool I was just out to friends, and my home situation made it difficult to publicly transition (though I started hrt in highschool). Prom was my coming out to the whole school I suppose. I had friends that helped me sort of plan everything and pick out a dress, shoes, etc. It really helped build my excitement, set a positive mood for the event. Day of it was really fun, I danced my ass off, and the whole night, people came up and commented on my dress.

I don't know your circumstances, but you might be pleasently surprised like I was.
