When I was 11 a boy from school saved my life and I fell in love with him. Five years later they dropped out of school and disappeared suddenly. I finally tracked them down 6 years after that, it turns out that they're now living as a woman. I also suspect that they're a prostitute... I still love them very much but I don't know what to think.
Would someone be kind enough to give me a crash course on transsexualism? I feel incredibly confused and conflicted about this.

Horrible TERF conservative jerkboat here. I just wanted to take a moment to explain my position, one that I feel is widely shared amongst my fellow jerks.
My view is that transsexualism is its own gender. In other words, transsexuals are the sex they were born as and they're not the one they want to be, but their gender expression still makes them something different, something in-between, by comparison to the majority of their biological sex.
Pic related, this is my all-inclusive gender map that plots out the position of transsexuals in relation to the other genders. Everyone [who isn't intersex, obviously] falls somewhere on this chart.
I also want to make the point that this map details six distinct genders, you cannot "become" one of them, you simply are this way or you are not. What makes you one gender or another is up for debate, I'm just dealing with the end-result here.
This is really the only way I can see for this argument to be resolved peacefully and rationally. It acknowledges the existence and validity of transpeople without attempting to distort or erase the hard fact of humans being divided by two biological sexes.
