It's scary because ME/CFS can make a person bedridden and even cause death. Post Exertional Malaise is a better name for it. It is a failure of the aerobic energy production system to produce enough energy (ATP) for normal activities. I'm unfortunately at the point where I can't even do a normal day's work. I can maybe work an hour or so a day, then sit at the computer or sleep for the rest of the day. That work includes fixing food, housework, etc.. Of course if one over extends one's self, it is possible to damage aerobic ATP production more and have a lower capacity after.
