i don't know what exactly you mean by "how common is this," but a lot of trans people, believe it or not, don't advertise the fact that they're trans after they start passing. 20 years is a really damn long time, though, especially because hormone therapy wasn't really widely available or known about until maybe a decade ago. also, most trans people in my experience tell their friends eventually after they become close, but it's up to the individual. and then again, my social circle is pretty young and liberal.
