Make sure you do your research on the filter. I did so after buying a Russian filter for cheap locally, and when Russia was still making them, they said they stopped using asbestos in their filters, but I found out someone recently bought a brand new filter made in the 90s, and after tearing it apart, they had found it to still have asbestos in it in some kind of paper-like material.

Still safe to own if you don't use the filter to breathe through.

Are they? I think the asbestos is in some paper form, but I'm not sure how it's made into it or what holds it together. I'm still not going to use mine; it just freaks me out too much. I'd think the glue or whatever it's held together with would start coming apart after this amount of time.

Plus, the person I bought one of mine from, I don't even think they knew what it was, so I have no clue how carefully they handled it.

The asbestos is in the pleated paper pre-filter at the bottom of the can.
It adds mechanical strength and also breaksdown arsenic compounds.
To get into your lungs it would have to seperate from the prefilter, travel through a cloth/paper filter element, through the charcoal bed, through another cloth/paper filter.
